It wouldn ' t be an exaggeration to say t hat the United States has entered a brand new age , because Don ald Trump, the country ' s 45th preside nt, is very differe nt from
any president before him.
Unlike Hillary Clinton, his opponent, and most previous USpresidents , who entered the Election after years of being politicians , Trump , 70 , was a New York real
estate (房地产)businessman. And he was not a presidential candidate who worked hard
to keep a perfect public image of a man always caring , fair and intelligent.
Instead, Trump has a reputation of being short-tempered, self-centered and hateful Toward those who disagree with him. He also blames immigrants, both from Latin America and the Middle East.
But to his supporters, Trump is not a typical politician, which is actually one
of his adv antages. “ We have seen our country take a down turn in the eyes of the
world. Weneed to go in a different direction, ” Binyomin Weisswasser, 39, from Chicago, told the Chicago Tribune. “ Trump's not a politician ...I like that he is not always politically correct and speaks his mind. It gives me the feeling that what you see is what you get. You may not like it , but you know what it is.
”
Interestingly , many who voted for Trump actually followed the “lesser of two
evils ” principle —one that people use when faced with picking from two unpleasant options —simply because they didn 't think Clinton was a better choice.
“ He's the candidate I disagree less with , ” Jack Stucky, 20 , a student at Northwestern University , told the Chicago Tribune. “I don 't think I 'd say Trump
is going to be the best president ever, but I did think he 'd be better than Hillary
Clinton. ”
25. What is the main purpose of the passage ?
A. To predict what changes Donald Trump would bring to the US.
B. To report on people 's different reactions to Trump 's win in the election.
C. To explore the advantages Donald Trump had over Hillary Clinton.
D. To analyze Donald Trump and the reasons for his victory in the presidential
election.
26. According to the text , compared with Hillary Clinton , Donald Trump ______ .
A. cares more about keeping his public image perfect
B. is believed to be more experienced and flexible in politics
- 5 -
C. is con sidered more straightforward and trustworthy
D. holds a more tolera nt attitude toward immigra nts
27. Accord ing to the text , many who voted for Trump _____ .
A. believed he would be the best preside nt ever
B. expected him to lead the US out of its dow nturn
C. were convinced that he would be always politically correct

Is beauty someth ing always positive? Almost every one thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants (被告).But in the executive
(主管的)circle, beauty can become a disadva ntage.
While attractive ness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woma n. Han dsome male executives were con sidered havi ng F more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.
Attractive female executives were con sidered to have less hon esty tha n un attractive on es; their success was conn ected not with ability but with factors such as luck.
All unattractive womenexecutives were thought to have more honesty and to be more
capable tha n the attractive female executives. Why are attractive wome n not thought to be able? An attractive woma n has an adva ntage in traditi on ally female jobs, but an attractive woma n in a traditi on ally manly positi on appears to lack the manly qualities required.
This is true even in politics, “When the only clue is how he or she looks, people
treat men and women differently, ” says Anne Bowman, who r ecently published a study on the effects of attractive ness on political can didates (候选人).She asked 125 college stude nts to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of wome n, in order of attractive ness. The stude nts were told the photographs were of can didates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.
The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men,
but the womenwho had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.
28. In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness ______ .
A. makes women look more honest and capable
B. strengthens the manly qualities required
C. often enables women to succeed quickly
D. is of no importance to women
29. Bowman' s experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness _______________ .
A. turns out to be a disadvantage to men
B. has as little effect on men as on women
C. affects men and women alike
D. is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women
30. According to the passage, people ' s views on beauty are often ____ .
A. one - sided
B. practical
C. old fashioned
D. supportive
31. The passage is mainly about ___ .
A. the advantages of being attractive

“Microbots ” smaller than the width of a human hair could be highly effective
and cost-efficient tools for removing lead and other pollutants from industrial waste water , according to a new study published in the journal Nano Letters last month.
In the space of a single hour ,the study showed the microbots could remove up to 95 percent of lead from water.
Lead is commonly found in waste water from mines or factories that make batteries
and electronic devices , and can cause a serious risk to public health , as the water crisis in Fli nt , Michiga n shows. In dustrial activities can also con tam in ate water with arse nic (砷),mercury(汞)and other

metals.
Heavy metal pollution can cost big cities billions of dollars a year, said Samuel
Sanchez ,co - author of the study and ICREA professor at the Institute for Bioengineering of Cataloniain Spain. He added that current methods of treating the water polluti on either are expe nsive or produce sec on dary waste.
San chezs said his team imagi ned using the microbots “ for the pre -treatme nt of
in dustrial waste water before dump ing into a river ” .The microbots have three layers. The outer layer is made of something that absorbs heavy metals , while a middle layer makes the microbots ferro-magnetic (铁磁性的)so that they can be directed by external magnets. An inner layer reacts when hydrogen peroxide (双氧水)is added to the waste
water , producing a stream of oxygen micro - bubbles that the microbots eject (喷射) to push themselves in the water. Once the bots finish their clean-up work, external magnets collect them for reuse. The heavy metal pollutants can also be recycled, making
the process even more efficie nt.
“ This tech nique can be helpful, so we imagi ne that small c ompa nies can use microbots to deal with their water in case they can ' t afford to bring their waste
water to pla nts that han dle polluted water, ” San chezs said. “ In myop inion, we should see first commercial use of self-drive n microbots in the next couple of years. ”
32. The microbots are created mainly to _______ .
A. remove heavy metals in rivers
B. help reside nts drink clea ner water
C. remove heavy metals from in dustrial waste water
D. remove differe nt heavy metals from water
33. What does the un derl ined word “ con tam in ate ” in Paragraph2 probably mea n ?

34. What Samuel San chez said in Paragraph3 main ly implies that _____ .
A. there is no way to treat pollutio n
B. it ' s really costly to treat pollution
C. heavy metal polluti on is hard to treat in big cities
D. cost —efficie nt tools for treat ing water polluti on are importa nt
35. What' s the function of hydrogen peroxide in the process?
A. To help the microbots move.
B. To work as exter nal magn ets.
C. To reduce oxygen micro - bubbles.
