It was Sunday yesterday and my son and I walked a couple of miles
in the morning. We got hungry so we decided to stop for a meal in a restaurant. While we were waiting in a line, a woman came in. She was very angry and talking about a beggar who had asked her for money. In her opinion, those people had the ability to earn their bread and butter.
I was feeling uncomfortable with the situation and wondering what I should say to my son later. I had told him that we should help those who were in need of he lp. At that time the lady said, “Today is my birthday,
and nobody can bother me.”
I knew this was my chance to help her change her thinking and to help her feel cared for on her birthday. I asked the waitress for help, telling her I wanted to pay for the woman’s meal.
The waitress looked at me in surprise. I paid for our meal and that of the woman. When the woman finished eating her food, the waitress told her that it was I who had paid for her meal. Then the woman came to our table and tried to force he r money on us. She even said, “I can’t take your money, because I didn’t help the person who asked me for money for food!”
I just smiled and said, “I just hope you have a very nice birthday.”
She ended up sitting near us and talked with us. It turned out that she was crazy about animals. Hearing our stories of pet adoptions really cheered her up. “You are a nice father,” she said.
She left, seeming to be happier and more thoughtful about all that had happened. I’d say it was worth the price.

A. the restaurant gave him a big discount

Stubborn children are usually very intelligent children with a strong sense of self. These children do not respond well to any kind of punishment. Spanking (打屁股) or yelling may gain temporary compliance (服从), but as time goes on power struggles increase. This invites children to use all their intelligence to defeat you rather than to cooperate. An important element of all positive discipline methods is that they help children use their intelligence to learn important life skills and positive characteristics such as self-discipline, responsibility, cooperation and problem-solving skills.
I have several suggestions that may invite cooperation from your child. First stop telling and start asking what and how questions. “What are we supposed to be doing now? Wha t problems will we have if we don’t dress
or eat? What ideas do you have to solve the problem?” If these questions are asked in a friendly manner, the child is often motivated to work with you instead of against you.
Another suggestion is to have regular family meetings. Put any problem you are having on the agenda (日程). During the family meeting have fun brainstorming for solutions. Let your child help you create routines and posters that show the order of things that need to be done. For younger children, the poster can include pictures. Include times when things need to be done. Then the poster becomes the boss. When your child is wasting time, ask, “What are we supposed to be doing now? Will you please check our poster?” The point is that anything you d o is more effective if you involve the child in ways that are respectful.
Making choices is another example. “Do you want to eat first or dress first?” Many parents think these suggestions take too much time. They don’t take nearly as much time as power s truggles. Even if they did take more time, they are important ways to teach children the skills they need for success in life.
24. We can learn from the first paragraph that .
A. stubborn children will give in to spanking
B. it’s not a good idea to p unish stubborn children
C. we shouldn’t be too strict with stubborn children
D. even positive discipline doesn’t work for stubborn children 25. Why should we have regular family meetings with stubborn children?
A. To work out an agenda.
B. To know what’s on their mind.
C. To get them to communicate with you.
D. To get them involved in solving problems.
26. We can infer from the last paragraph that .
A. power is the best policy to discipline children
B. it takes little time for children to make choices
C. it’s worth the time to let children make choices
D. young children can hardly make choices themselves
27. The main purpose of the text is to .
A. give advice
B. argue for a point
C. analyze a problem
D. share personal experience

Sure, it’s good to get along with your teacher because it makes that time you spend in the classroom more pleasant. And yes, it’s good to get along with your teacher because, in general, it’s smart to learn how to relate to the different types of people you’ll meet throughout your life.
But really, there’s one super-important reason why you should get along with your teacher. Kids who get along with their teachers not only learn more, but they’re more comfortable asking questions and getting
extra help. This makes it easier to understand new material and do your best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher, he or she can be someone to turn to with problems, such as problems with learning or school issues, such as bullying.
As a kid in elementary or middle school, you’re at a wonderful stage in your life. You’re able to take in lots of new and exciting information. Apart from that, you’re able to think about all this information in new ways. Your teacher knows that, and in most cases, he or she is thrilled to be the person who’s giving you all that material and helping you put it together. Remember, teachers are people, too, and they feel great if you’re open to what they’re teaching you. That’s why they wanted to be teachers in the first place to teach!
Some kids may be able to learn in any situation, whether they like the teacher or not. But most kids are sensitive to the way they get along with the teacher, and if things aren’t going well, they won’t learn as well and won’t enjoy being in class.
28. Paragraph 2 mainly talks about_______.
A. new materials learned from teachers
B. ways to develop relationship with teachers
C. benefits in getting along with teachers
D. avoiding problems happening around kids
29. What’s the writer’s attitude towards getting along with teachers? A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Uncaring. D. Favorable.
30. What can we know from the passage?
A. Kids are unable to understand lots of exciting information.
B. Kids are bullied while communicating with others in schools.
C. Kids will leave the class when not doing quite well with their teachers.
D. Kids will leave the class when not satisfied with teachers’teaching methods.
31. The passage is most probably taken from______.
A. children’s literature
B. an education magazine
C. a science report
D. an advertisement
D
Have you ever heard of a great Chilean poet? He was once referred to as the Picasso of poetry. Beloved by Chileans of all classes, he is one of the most widely read and respected poets in history. And this year is the 110th birthday of Pablo Neruda (1904-1973).
Born with the name Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basolto, he was a tall, shy and lonely boy. He loved to read and started to write poetry when he was ten. The American poet Walt Whitman, whose framed picture Neruda later kept on his table, became a major influence on his work.
However, his father did not like the idea of having a poet for a son
and tried to discourage him from writing. To cover up the publication of his first poem, he took the pen name Pablo Neruda.
In 1924 Neruda gained fame with his most widely read work “Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair’’. Yet his rich experi ence as a
diplomat and exile made him go beyond the theme of love. His work also reflected the political struggle of the left and development of South America. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. Neruda loved the sea which he saw as creative, destructive and
forever moving. He found inspiration in the power and freedom of the waves and the seabirds on the coast. “I need the sea because it teaches me,” he wrote. “I move in the university of the waves.” He loved how the sea forever renewed itself, a renewal echoed (共鸣) in his work. 32. The underlined word “Picasso” can probably be replaced by “________”.
A. poem fan
B. most important person
C. famous person from Picasso
D. freedom fighter in Picasso
33. Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basolto took the pen name Pablo Neruda because ________.
A. he was greatly influenced by other poets
B. literary greats usually used the pen name
C. his father encouraged him to use the name
D. he wanted to prevent his father knowing the publication 34. Which of the following is not the theme of his works?
A. Social reform.
B. Love.
C. Political struggle.
D. Development of South America.
35. The last paragraph mainly tells us ________.
A. Neruda loved to write his poems near the sea
B. the sea gave Neruda vast writing inspiration
C. the beautiful scenery along the Chile coast
D. Neruda’s poems
were widely read overseas

Worry problems are everywhere in our daily life. How to solve them?
The answer is that we must equip ourselves to deal with different kinds of worries by learning the three basic steps of problem analysis. The three steps are: Get the facts
Why is it so important to get the facts? Unless you have the facts, you can’t possibly attempt to solve your problem intellige ntly. Without the facts, all you can do is wondering around in confusion. It is not an easy job to get facts. When you are worried, your emotions are riding
high. 36 .
When trying to get the facts, you can pretend that you are collecting this information not for yourself but for some other person. 37 You can also pretend that you are a lawyer preparing to agree. Try to get all the facts both on your side and the other side of the case. You will generally find the truth lies somewhere in between.
38
Whenever you are worried, write down the questions that make you worry. And write out all the various steps you could take and then the probable consequences of each step. For example, what am I worrying about? What can I do about i t? Here is what I’m going to do about it. After carefully weighing all the facts, you can calmly come to a decision.
Act on that decision.
39 How can you break the worry habit before it breaks you? Crowd worry out of your mind by keeping busy. Plenty of action is one of the best ways to cure worry. 40 If you know a situation is beyond your power, say to yourself: “It is so; it can’t be otherwise.” Don’t permit little things to ruin your happiness. Try to cultivate a mental attitude that will bring you peace and happiness.
A. Accept what can’t be avoided.
B. Analyze the facts.
C. There comes a time when you must decide and never look back.
D. But here are two ideas that can help you see the facts in a clear and objective way.
E. Unless you take your action, all your fact-finding and analysis is
a sheer waste of energy.
F. Decide how much anxiety a thing may be worth.
G. This will help you to take a cold and fair view of the evidence.
