According to the Oxford English Dictionary,
the term “couch potato” first appeared in print in a December 1979 edition of the Los Angeles Times. Since then,
it has become a familiar term for a person who spends a lot of time sitting,
and little time exercising.Although there does not seem to be any particular reason why the term“couch potato”is used rathe
r than “couch tomato”,
a person may become a “couch potato”because living this wa y is said to make you round like a potato. The term is a
lso said to have something to do with the connection of potato es with highcalorie(卡路里)food like potato chips.
People now would say “couch potato” whenever they talk abo ut overweight and obesity(肥
胖).Indeed, “couch potatoes” are believed to risk heart disea se,which can be avoided by regular exercise.
It is true that technology and modern life in general makes us sick, fat,
lazy and physically/mentally soft. The more time people spend using technology, particularly televisions and computers, the less time they will spend being physically active.“Couch potato”kids are a particular concern.Media reports rep eatedly claim that children today are fatter than their elder gen erations, but less athletically skilled,
less interested in physical activity and more addicted(上瘾的)to “junk food” and technology such as television and comp uters. The message is clear:
today's children are fat because they are lazy and eat too mu ch.Moreover,
because technology is becoming more sophisticated(复杂
的),children are less able to resist(抵抗,忍得
住)technology's attraction,
and are more likely to spend more time using technology, less time doing physical activity and, therefore,
more likely to be fat.
25.The first paragraph is mainly talking about .A.why “couch potato” is used as a term for a person B.when “couch potato” is used as a term for a person C.how “couch potato” is different from“couch tomato”D.what kind of person looks like a potato

C.we needn't do many things by ourselves any more D.we spend all our time watching TV and playing computer games
27.It's kids' that people are particularly concerned about .
A.food B.study
C.health D.hobby
28.According to the passage, the author may
suggest that .
A.scientists should stop their research into technology B.parents should take better care of their children
C.kids should be stopped from using new technology D.people should spend less time using technology

But many of the questions were not appropriate (合适
的)to Xiaotu's role and it learned a lot of language from users which was unrelated to library affairs,
and which was often meaningless or worse.
One user asked Xiaotu,
“Who are your parents?”And it answered,
“Tsinghua University and Peking University.”
But when students returned for the spring term,
Xiaotu was put back into service after its data cleanup.
“We have improved its services and I hope users can teach it useful information now,”said Yao.

Every American family has its own traditions on Thanksgivin g Day,
and mine is no different. Once the national holiday arrives, my mum rises early to make the meal. She puts a turkey in the o ven, chops carrots and bakes pies. I'm sorry to say that the m en in the family—my dad, my younger brother and myself—rarely pitch in to help. Our job is to wash the mountain of dirty dishes after the meal is over.
Around 2 p.m. every Thanksgiving Day, family members sea t themselves around the kitchen table. Plates of turkey, veget ables, salad, rolls and pies cover it. At this point, we can hardl y keep ourselves from drooling (流口
水) all over our fancy clothes, but it's not yet time to eat. First, we must bow our heads, close our eyes and say a praye r of thanks aloud to God for giving us everything we have. Un der normal circumstances,
I would have no problem making a list of things I am thankful f or. I grew up in a loving family. My parents, who aren't wealth y, took out loans to help me pay for university.
However, the funny thing is, every time I sit down for Thanksg iving dinner and try to say a prayer of thanks, my mind usually goes blank. I think it has something to do with my growling (咕咕
叫) stomach and all of that food sitting right there under my no se.
Eventually, though, we all finish our short prayers and dig in. To be sure, the day includes other highlights—
visiting with family and watching football. But usually around 6 p.m. we are all ourselves stuffed like turkeys and thankful to have a nice warm bed to sleep in.
32.The purpose of the text is to .
A.tell what the family do for Thanksgiving Day
B.tell how the family spends Thanksgiving Day C.introduce foods served on Thanksgiving Day D.introduce the American Thanksgiving Day
33.On Thanksgiving Day the author's family do the following except .
A.watch a movie B.make visits
C.have a big meal D.watch football
34.Why does the author's mind usually go blank when sayin g a prayer of thanks?
A.He is too thankful to say a word.
B.His mind is on the food before him.
C.He feels too excited to speak.
D.He is too shy to speak in public.
35.The underlined phrase “dig in” in the last paragraph is clo sest in meaning to “”.
A.chat with others B.make a hole
C.mix things up D.start eating

Eventually,though,
we all finish our short prayers and dig in.
the day includes other highlights—
visiting with family and watching football.”
【答案】 A
“I think it has something to do with my growling(咕咕
叫) stomach and all of that food sitting right there under my no se.”

declaration“声明,宣言”;opening“开放,开始”;speech“演说”。
【答案】 A

turn“转动,(依次轮到的)机会”;name“名字”;order“命令,次序”。
【答案】 A
”
【答案】 B

as well“也,又”,多用于句末;except for“除……以外”;in addition“另外”。
【答案】 C

第二段和第三段都用到了reflect on这个短语,意思是“回忆,反思”。
take on“呈现”;seize on“把握”;
bring on“使发展,导致(通常指坏事),促使提高”。

According to the Oxford English Dictionary,
the term “couch potato” first appeared in print in a December 1979 edition of the Los Angeles Times. Since then,
it has become a familiar term for a person who spends a lot of time sitting,
and little time exercising.Although there does not seem to be any particular reason why the t erm“couch potato”is used rather than “couch tomato”,
a person may become a “couch potato”because living this way is said to make you round like a potato. The term is a
lso said to have something to do with the connection of potatoes with highcalorie(卡路
里)food like potato chips.
People now would say “couch potato” whenever they talk about overweight and obesity(肥胖).Indeed, “couch potatoes” are believed to risk heart disease,
which can be avoided by regular exercise.

lazy and physically/mentally soft. The more time people spend using technology, particularly televisions and computers, the less time they will spend being physically active.“Couch potato”kids are a particular concern.Media reports repeatedly claim that children toda y are fatter than their elder generations, but less athletically skilled,
less interested in physical activity and more addicted(上瘾
的)to “junk food” and technology such as television and computers. The message is clear:
today's children are fat because they are lazy and eat too much. Moreover,

and are more likely to spend more time using technology,
less time doing physical activity and, therefore, more likely to be fat.

An online chatting robot named Xiaotu on the website of Tsinghua University's library had to
pause services during the winter vacation because too many visitors wanted to talk to it abou t absurd (荒谬的) matters unrelated to library services.
Xiaotu,which means “little library”in Chinese,
has the ability to learn during its conversations with humans, but its desi
gners said it has picked up too much “unsuitable material” from visitors to the website.
“It had been a long time anyway since we last cleared up its database(数据库) ,
so we decided to pause the service to do it,”said a design group member surnamed Yao,who works in the university's library.
Xiaotu's main functions include answering questions about the library,
searching library collections and other search engines, and selflearning.
Design work on Xiaotu started in 2009 and by the end of 2010,
it was put online on the homepage (主
页) of Tsinghua University's library and on ,
a social network similar to Facebook.
On the library's homepage,it was scoring more than 1,000 visits a day.
But many of the questions were not appropriate (合适
的)to Xiaotu's role and it learned a lot of language from users which was unrelated to library a ffairs, and which was often meaningless or worse.
One user asked Xiaotu,“Who are your parents?”And it answered,
“Tsin ghua University and Peking University.”
But when students returned for the spring term,
Xiaotu was put back into service after its data cleanup.
“We have improved its services and I hope users can teach it useful information now,”said Yao.
