It is only seventy years since British women got the 1 to vote. Some people think this is the main reason why women are
so under-represented in politics, trade unions and big businesses. Other feel it is simply that they are much too busy doing other things. The old saying "a woman's place is in the home" may seem out of 2 to most people, but the old 3 image of a woman as a supporting wife and caring mother is certainly still usual.
In 1975 the law did not 4 women to be paid less than men doing the same work. Certainly it is usually the 5 nowadays that women doing the same jobs as men get the same money for doing it, but generally women do not do the same jobs; they do different ones that 6 lower salaries. The areas women work in are almost all those of "service": teaching, nursing, catering
and cleaning, jobs that can be seen as an extension of the mothering role.
Apart from 7 after people during the day at work, women often have to take care of a family at home, too, which may mean they have less energy to compete in the race for professional development. In almost every field, top positions are more 8 to be filled by men. While most teachers are women, for example, most headmasters are not. School cooks are women, head cooks are men and even cleaners tend to be watched over and 9 by male caretakers.

A rich businessman was on holiday by the beach in Mexico when a small fishing boat entered nearby with just one
man on board. Inside the boat were several large tasty-looking fish.
"That's quite a fine catch," said the businessman. "How long did it take you to pull those in?"
"Only a little while," said the fisherman.
"So why don't you stay out fishing longer and catch more fish?" asked the businessman.
"This is enough to take care of the needs of my family," replied the fisherman.
"But what do you do with all the rest of your time?" asked the businessman.
The fisherman said, "I sleep late, I fish a little, I spend time with my wife and play with my children. Then I rest in the afternoon. In the evening, I visit the rest of my family or walk into the village where I have a drink with my friends. I have a
full and busy life."
The businessman laughed. "I have a business degree from one of the best universities in the world. I can help you. "But when the time is right, you can sell your company. You would become rich. You would make millions."
"Millions!" exclaimed the fisherman. "Then what?"
"Then you could retire to a little village by the sea," said the businessman, "where you could
sleep late, you could fish a little, spend time with your wife, play with your kids, then rest in the
afternoon. In the evening, you could walk into the village and have a drink with your friends. You
see how wonderful things would be!"

It is estimated that some seven hundred million people—about half the world's adult population write, and there are probably two hundred and fifty million more whose level of skill is so slight that it is barely qualified as literacy ( 识字,会读会写).
Recently the attack on illiteracy has been stepped up. A world plan has been drawn up by a committee of UNESCO experts in Paris, as part of the United Nations Development Decade, and
an international conference on the subject has also been held. UNESCO stresses that functional literacy is the aim. People must learn the basic skill of responsible citizenship: the ability to read notices, newspapers, timetables, letters, price-lists, to keep simple records and accounts, to sort out the significance of the information gathered and to fill in forms.
The major areas of illiteracy are in Asia, Africa and Central and South America. In Africa there are at least one hundred million illiterates, consisting of eighty to eighty -five percent of the total population. In Europe the figure is about twenty -four million, and most of them is in the southern part, with Spain, Italy, and Portugal heading the list (the United Kingdom has about seven hundred thousand).

Part IV 、 Guided Writing
With the development of material prosperity, advertisements have become more and more important in our daily life.
Advertisements give latest information about products. If there were no advertising, consumers could not know about goods in their local shops. Advertising helps sell to a bigger market. Therefore, the more goods are sold, the cheaper they are. Advertisements also provide money for newspapers, magazines, radios and TV stations, etc.
But there are also some opinions against advertising. Some people think that advertisements do not give much information but only try to persuade you to buy. They create a demand for goods that are not really needed. Besides, advertising adds to the cost of goods. Furthermore, some of them look ugly and spoil the environment.
Actually, every coin has two sides. So does advertising. But in today's world, advertising is not only necessary but also helpful. It's hard to imagine a world without advertisements.。
