Edison’s Failed Inventions
Edison had 1,093 patents for different inventions. Many of them, like the light bulb, the phonograph, and the motion picture camera, were brilliant creations that have a huge influence on our everyday life. However, not everything he created was a success; he also had a few failures.
One concept that never took off was Edison’s interest in using cement to build things. He formed the Edison Portland Cement Co. in 1899, and made everything from cabinets(for phonograph) to pianos and houses. Unfortunately, at the time, concrete was too expensive and the idea was never accepted. Cement wasn’t a total failure, though. His company was hired to build Yankee Stadium in Bronx. What else do you think Edison tried to create?
From the beginning of the creation of motion pictures, many people tried to combine film and sound to make “talking” motion pictures. Here you can see an example of an early film attempting to combine sound with pictures made by Edison’s assistant, W.K.L.Dickson.
By 1895, Edison had created the kinetophone—a kinetoscope (peep-hole motion picture viewer) with a phonograph that played inside the cabinet. Sound could be heard through two ear tubes while the viewer watched the images. This creation never really took off, and by 1915 Edison abandoned the idea of sound motion pictures.
The greatest failure of Edison’s career was his inability to create a practical way to mine iron ore. He worked on mining methods through the late 1880s and early 1890s to supply the Pennsylvania s teel mills’ demand for iron ore. In order to finance this work, he sold all his stock in General Electric, but was never able to create a separator that could extract iron from unusable, low-grade ores. Eventually, Edison gave up on the idea, but by then h e had lost all the money he’d invested.
56. Among all of his 1,093 patents, which of the following is NOT his?
A. Light bulb.
B. Telephone.
C. Phonograph.
D. Motion picture camera.
57. Which failure made him lost all his investment?
A. The way to mine iron ore.
B. The talking motion pictures.
C. Using the cement to build things.
D. The light bulb.
58. Why was the cement to build things not totally successful in 1899?
A. Because he failed in inventing the cement.
B. Because the cement was not as firm as that of today.
C. Because his idea was not accepted at that time.
D. Because his company closed down.
59. What can we learn about Edison?
A. Edison was a successful businessman.
B. Edison only devoted all his time to the invention.
C. Edison had only two failures.
D. Edison was both an inventor and a businessman.
60. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Edison succeeded in all his inventions.
B. Edison was a lucky bird then.
C. Americans were conservative in 1899.
D. Even a famous man experienced failure.

When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.
People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes, everything else seems blurry (=unclear). Many people who do a lot of work, such as writing, reading and sewing become near—sighted.
People who are far-sighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.
Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle (角度). To prove this to yourself, look at an object our of one eye; then look at the same object out of your other eye. You will find the objec t’s relation to the background and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes.
61. We should take good care of our eyes ______ .

D. an eye difficulty that cannot be corrected by glasses

The Romans built great “aqueducts” to carry fresh water from the mountains to the cities. Many of these aqueducts are still standing today. The Romans also built great pipes under the ground to carry away the sewage. In Rome, one of these sewage pipes (sewers) is still used today; it is 2,000 years old. The Roman Emperors even set up a government health service. They built the first great public hospitals in Europe, and they paid doctors to look after poor people.
Then the Roman Empire fell to pieces, these civilized methods of treatment disappeared from most of Europe, for more than a thousand years. People went back to the old way. They lived in dirty conditions which helped to cause diseases; and they asked God to cure the diseases. They shut up mentally sick people in prisons. Or they burnt them alive because they were supposed to have magic powers.
But the work of the Greek and Roman doctors was not lost. Over a thousand years ago, the Arabs moved into many of the Mediterranean countries. They took big parts of the old Roman lands. They translated the Greek and Roman medical books into Arabic. Arab doctors themselves made many new discoveries.
When civilization at last came back to Europe, men once again translated the Greek and Roman works on medicine into Latin. Slowly-very slowly-European doctors discovered again the things that the Greeks and Romans had known so long ago. Slowly, they began to make new discoveries. They found out more about the way body works-the way our blood goes round our bodies, the way our nerves send messages from our brains to our muscles, the way these muscles move our bodies.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad because it sets one person against another and it leads to unfriendly relationships between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit (追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winners and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame(责备)competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one' s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins
to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.
71. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.
B. Opinions about competition are different among people.
C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition
72. Why do some people favor competition according to passage?
A. It pushes society forward.
B. It builds up a sense of duty.
C. It improves personal abilities.
D. It encourages individual efforts.
73. The underlined phrase "the most vocal" in Paragraph 3
means"_________”.
A. those who try their best to win
B. those who value competition most highly
C. those who are against competition most strongly
D. those who rely on others most for success
74. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with
a desire to fail?
A. One' s worth lies in his performance compared with others
B. One' s success in competition needs great efforts.
C. One' s achievement is determined by his particular
D. One' s success is based on how hard he has tried.75. Which point of view may the author agree to?
A. Every effort should be paid back.
B. Competition should be encouraged.
C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.
D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.
