“Can’t you see that I'm not a child any more? What do I have to do to prove that I've grown up?” These are questions that are asked time after time by teenagers around the world, and in every culture there's a different answer. For David, growing up on Pentecost Island in the South Pacific, the answer had always been clear. He had to become a land diver. Land diving is a tradition on Pentecost Island which inspired the better known sport of bungee jumping.
Every year at a ceremony called Naghol, the men of the island jump off towers thirty metres tall, with long vines ( 藤条) tied to their feet. A perfect jump is one in
which the shoulders land gently on the ground. People believe that this will help the crops on the island to grow. If the vine is too short and the jumper's fall is stopped before the shoulders touch the ground, the jumper is considered a coward( 懦夫). If the vine is too long, the result can be serious injury or death.
As David climbed the tower, his mother watched from below. She was holding a toy car that he used to play with when he was younger. After a boy's first land dive, his favourite toy is thrown away to show that he is no longer a child.
“Before my jump, I felt very nervous,” remembers fourteen-year-old David. “As a child, I always used to watch the land divers at Naghol. Every year someone would get an injury. For a second, I panicked. I thought about changing my mind ... but you can't become a proper man without being a land diver.”
David jumped. While the people down below were playing drums and singing, he fell head-first to the ground. Luckily, he landed safely and walked away with just a few bruises. And does he feel like a man now? “Well, I certainly feel more mature (成熟的),” he smiles. “And the girls in my village are much more interested in me than they were before.”
24. What do we learn about land diving from the text?
A. It is a show to entertain the tourists.
B. It is a newer sport than bungee jumping.
C. It is seen as a way to ensure a good harvest.
D. It is done to choose the bravest man in the village.
25. Why was David's mother holding a toy car?
A. She wanted to give it to him as a gift.
B. It helped him to find enough courage.
C. It was the prize given to the best diver.
D. She planned to throw it away after his jump.
26. Why did David finally decide to jump?
A. He would be rewarded if he made it.
B. He didn't want to let his mother down.
C. He knew he wouldn't be seriously injured.
D. He wanted to prove he had become a man.
27. How was life changed for David after his jump?
A. He was more attractive to the opposite sex.
B. He was treated as an adult by everyone.
C. He became interested in land diving.
D. He took a more optimistic attitude.
C
Calls to “stamp out bullying (霸凌)” are an unrealistic reaction to the threat of litigation (诉讼)that hangs over all schools. Bullying is partly a consequence of human nature and partly to do with the environment.
From a teacher's viewpoint, it's not always easy to tell bullying from harmless fun where one of the involvers has gone a little too far. Naturally, we keep an eye on those students who are likely to be bullied and those who tend to be the causes of trouble. However, with so much interaction between students outside the formal
lesson structure, even the most experienced teacher can fail to read the undercurrents (暗流) correctly.
Doing what is right in relation to bullying is not an exact science. Issues relating to gender, race, dress, physical appearance, peer pressure, and so on, all stand to make the matter complex. Many schools have a “bullying policy (政策)”. Su ch policies are useful in that they serve to concentrate teacher and administration attention on the issues, and on the rights and responsibilities of all concerned. However, the policies are born more out of a fear of litigation than a genuine desire to deal with some of the harder issues.
The best defence against bullying in schools is for teachers to know their students well. Small class sizes allow teachers to better know the characters of their students and develop stronger staff-student relationships. If so, students are more likely to trust in their teachers when trouble is about. Teachers are more likely to make the right decisions and, more often than not, ward off occasions of bullying before they happen.
But this happens only in a steady school environment, where teachers are familiar faces from
year to year and, preferably, where the student population is not too large. If teachers were paid
salaries more in line with other professionals, perhaps a greater number would harbor a desire to
take care of a class through to their final exams. If counseling (咨询) services and teaching aides were recognized by those who pay as more than elective extras ... If ... If ...
28. What difficulty is discussed in Paragraph 2?
A. Correctly interpreting students' behavior.
B. Structuring lessons outside the classroom.
C. Paying special attention to those often bullied.
D. Students defending themselves against bullies.
29. What is the author's attitude to bullying policies?
A. Confused.
B. Doubtful.
C. Hopeful.
D. Unconcerned.
30. Which word can replace “ward off” in Paragraph 4?
A. Catch.
B. Prevent.
C. Decrease.
D. Record.
31. What does the author conclude in the last paragraph?
A. Bullying and teachers' rights are separate issues.
B. Student population has little to do with bullying.
C. Teachers need support to reduce bullying.
D. Few people want to be teachers for life.
D
In Australia and other developed countries, consumption(消耗)is viewed as important for economic growth. In recent years, however, concern has grown about the increasing number of people consuming limited resources at a shocking rate. The United States has only about 5 percent of the world's population, yet consumes about 35
percent of the world's energy.
Impressive packaging and storage such as refrigeration is a luxury (奢侈) that consumers in developed countries take for granted (认为理所当然). In many parts of the world where refrigeration is either unavailable or too expensive, fresh food is bought daily from open-air markets.
These markets make little influence on the environment. They do not use energy to store food and because they mostly operate during daylight hours, no electricity is used for lighting. Packaging is mostly unnecessary, and when needed, is often made from biodegradable (可生物降解的) vegetable matter. These markets still exist in many parts of the developed world, but are an alternative(供选择的)form of shopping. Even in developing countries, shops are fast becoming the main places for consumers.
Commercial(商业的) packaging is becoming as much a part of consumption in developing countries as it is in developed countries. Plastic bags, drink cans, and hamburger containers are now thrown into rubbish piles along with banana leaves which are a more traditional form of packaging. In most cases, it all ends up at the local garbage disposal plant and is not recycled.
Many people are starting to notice the influence of consumerism on the environment. It is affecting not only the earth, but also our health. Some scientists think that the greenhouse effect has increased due to the production, use and disposal of many of the products we use.
32. What does the author think of packaging and refrigeration?
A. It's quite necessary.
B. It's a costly process.
C. It's the progress of society.
D. It's different from consumerism.
33. What can be known about the open-air markets in developing countries?
A. They are not changing.
B. They can't be seen now.
C. They are getting less popular.
D. They are appearing in more places.
34. What are rarely used as packaging according to the author?
A. Drink cans.
B. Plastic bags.
C. Banana leaves.
D. Hamburger containers.
35. What's the best title for the text?
A. Different ways of packaging.
B. Technology vs the environment
C. Markets in developing countries
D. Consumption vs economic growth

37 I had followed her to the buffet and started talking to her about the food.“You seem very interested in food,” she laughed. “Well, I'm a great cook,”
I told her. It was a lie, but I had to find an excuse t o see her again. “Why don't I cook you dinner sometime?”
The dinner party was extremely embarrassing. I ordered food from a nearby restaurant and pretended that I had cooked it. She offered to wash up and found the delivery boxes in the kitchen. She laughed at me and I felt awful. 38
I never saw Jane after our terrible dinner date. I started a cookery course and found that I was good at it after all. I went on to train to be a chef (主厨). 39 Finally, I was able to open my own restaurant.

For eleven years, Tom Neale worked as a doctor, his wife, Mel, worked as a teacher; they save every coin they could. Eventual, they had enough money to buy the boat. That was seventeen years before, and, except for occasional stop, they have been at sea ever since. For the Neales and their two daughters, the difficulties of their lifestyle are very real: There's not much money, so meals often consist of about rice and fish. Storms are dangerous, especially that the boat is far from land. But Tom Neale says overcoming dangers together as a family are one of the rewards of their way of life. 书面表达
One possible version:
Dear Tom,
I’m writing to tell you about the birthday party held for Mr. Smith, our foreign language teacher.
The party was held in our classroom yesterday evening. All the students from our class took part. We prepared some small gifts for him, most of which we made ourselves. We also bought him a birthday cake. When he entered our classroom, we started to sing Happy Birthday to You, which greatly excited and deeply moved him. Then we performed some shows created by ourselves. He said it was the most meaningful birthday he had ever had.
He is far away from his family so we agreed to spend more of our spare time with him, which should make him feel less homesick.
Yours,
Li Hua
