Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop the people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from blowing dirty smoke into the air. The most dangerous problem is air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. It is sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.

You may think the days of childhood wou ld rank as most people’s happiest. But, in fact, men are happiest at 40 while women are most satisfied at 38 when they are fit and healthy and have good friends.
A survey showed that the best moments in life are the birth of a first child, your wedding day and the birth of grandchildren.
The research involved (涉及) questioning 1000 people aged 70 or older. They were asked about their happiest moments and their biggest regrets in life. More than half the people questioned said they had no regrets in life, but the most common regrets were choosing the wrong career and not running after lifelong dreams.
Other happy moments to make the top ten included the day you retire, moving into a new home, seeing your child’s first steps and meeting the man or woman of your dreams.
One in ten of those with regrets wished they had worked harder in school and seven per cent regretted not travelling the world more. The other two to make the top five regrets were getting divorced and getting married too soon.
The top piece of advice the researchers offered to younger generations was to never take
the people you love for granted. Other top pearls of wisdom were “believe in yourself〞, “nothing worth having comes easy〞 and “don’t hold grudges (怨恨)〞.
Matthew Gledhill, who took part in the survey, said: “The message from those with the most life experience is that the key to happiness is to
worry less and live in the moment with the people you care about most. As much as people look to the future and try to climb career ladders, our research clearly shows that happiness is linked much more heavily to relationships, friends and family than social status.〞
29. According to the survey, which of the following is the best moment in life?
A. The day you retire.
B. Seeing your child’s first s teps.

A handsome man can earn a fifth more than a plainer colleague (相貌平平同事)but a beautiful woman is not paid a penny more than her average-looking colleagues, new research has shown.
The study by senior economists(经济学家) found that being
good-looking meant male(男性) workers could earn 22 percent more than average-looking colleagues. Researchers said good looks did not give women a similar advantage.
Andrew Leigh, the former economics professor at the Australian National University who co-authored the report, said: “Beauty can be a double-edged sword for women.〞
“Some people still believe good looks and intelligence(智慧) are incompatible (矛盾的) in women so a good-looking woman can't be that productive, but it doesn’t affect men’s pay.〞
He said that although he believed good-looking women may also earn more, the research did not support his theory.
The research found that handsome men in all jobs, from manual labor to highly-paid professional careers, can earn 22 percent more than their colleagues doing the same work.
Men with below-average looks face a battle in the office, with ugliness reducing a man's earnings by 26 percent compared to an average-looking worker.
Former male model Ian Mitchell, 28, who has a first class degree in history from Edinburgh University and now works for a cosmetics (化装品)company, told the Sunday Times: “It gives you confidence, and I
suspect people tend to warm to you more quickly.〞
The study, named Unpacking the Beauty Premium, was the largest exercise of its kind and repeated a survey from 1984 to see if the beauty premium had changed.
Leigh said the research showed people in the workplace were “lookist(以貌取人的)〞 and he hoped the findings would encourage employers to remove their prejudice(偏见).
32. What has the research found?
A. Handsome men have an advantage in their jobs
B. Appearance plays an important role at work
C. Male worker pay more attention to their appearance.
D. The more beautiful a female is, the better their appearance will be.
33. What is Andrew Leigh’s opinion?
A. Beauty is a double-edged sword for workers.
B. Good-looking females are likely to earn more
C. Employers have prejudice in employing workers
D. More attention is paid to appearance now than before.
34. We can learn from the text that men who are below average in appearance ____.
A. earn26%less than handsome men
B. earn 26%less than average-looking men
