The History and Future of Special Effect
Special effects in movies can seemingly make dinosaurs come to life and spaceships soar through the galaxy. Most of today’s effects are created with computers. But special effects themselves are not new. Here are some important moments in the history of movie effects.
The Beginning of Movies
When audiences in Paris,France, viewed the first projected movies in1895,they were amazed.Movies that might seem ordinary to us now were brand new to viewers. Some early filmmakers, such as Georges Méliès(may-lee ES),experimented with such film tricks as making objects“disappear”or change size. One of Méliès movies,A Trip to the Moon(1902),was about
a spacecraft that lands on the moon and was one of the best special-effects movies of its time.
Models and Miniatures
Before computers, many filmmakers used models of monsters and miniature(微缩模型) buildings to create special effects. Both King Kong(1933)and Gozilla(1954)were made using
tiny models to depict a huge monster. Each model was positioned and photographed carefully
to make it seem as if the creature were moving through a real city.
The Future of Special Effects
Many filmmakers use special cameras and other equipment to create movies that people
watch in3-D.Monsters and spaceships seem to leap from the screen, making audiences feel as if

As children,Greg and I dove into everything with passion. We raced our bikes and illustrated(配插图)our own comic books. We even became attracted to the same blonde girl from around the corner,a sixth-grader named Joanne who hardly knew we existed.
The last time I saw Greg was sometime in1966.I can’t recall saying goodbye before he moved.
But then,a few summers ago,I saw a familiar woman.“Excuse me.Would your name happen to be Joanne?”
“Uh,yes…”She didn’t recognize me until I explained who I was.We hadn’t exchanged more than a few dozen words in our entire lifetime.“Have you stayed in touch with Greg?”she asked.I was surprised she even knew of our friendship.
“No.I haven’t,”I admitted.“I wish I had.”
Back home I checked my messages.I glanced at one email, then read it from start to finish. The email was from Greg.
Greg had tracked me down through social media. He was now married, had two children and had become a musician. We exchanged several emails before connecting by phone.A month later,my wife and I drove to meet Greg and his family.
Standing at his front door,I felt unsure of what to say or do.So much time had passed. But after hugs and introductions, the years dissolved as we exchanged stories about our lives.I had brought along the only picture I could find containing the two of us from my sixth birthday. As he gazed at the photo, Greg handed me a small, old card:Greg’s invitation to my sixth birthday party, signed“From Donnie”in faded blue crayon.

Full moon nights always seem a little frightening. Is there any reason for this?
It turns out that sometimes it is true–a new study has found that full moons really can cause restless (不安宁)nights.
To test the moon’s effects on humans,a research team studied the sleep of33volunteers.In their sleep lab, there were no windows or any other ways of telling whether the moon was full outside. The researchers watched volunteers’brain activity, eye movements and hormone(荷尔蒙)levels.
Test results showed that volunteers’brain activity during deep sleep dropped by30percent on nights closer to a full moon.On these nights, volunteers also took about5minutes longer to fall asleep and slept for20minutes less.Their levels of hormone that helps control our sleep cycles also dropped.
Hearing about the finding, many people would say,“Yeah,I knew that already!I never sleep well during a full moon.Full moons are much brighter than regular ones, which stops people from sleeping as deeply.”
The study also noticed the brightness:remember, volunteers could not see the moon from inside the lab.So what is the cause of the full moon’s power?
According to Professor Christian Cajochen of Basel University in Switzerland, the effect may come from the old times when humans had to run from being killed by big animals.“On full moon nights there was more light and so in our past the risk was higher,so maybe we needed to wake up more easily,”explained Cajochen.“However,it is hard to see a use for it in our modern lives.”
In fact, our sleep is not the only thing that changes with the moon.So does the level of sea and also some animals. For example, mosquitoes(蚊子)usually give birth around the full moon.As a result, they bite more on full moon days so that their eggs can grow better.
42.Which of the following is true about the test?
A.The lab had no windows.
B.The moon was full outside.
C.There were35people in the test in all.
D.The researchers only watched volunteers’brain activity.
43.According to the article,on nights closer to full moon the volunteers_____________.
A.could watch the changes of the moon
B.could sleep more
C.were more active during deep sleep than usual
D.found it harder to get to sleep
44.From the article,we can find that the full moon’s effects on human sleep______.
A.are because of the size of the moon
B.may be different in different times
C.has something to do with changing levels of sea
D.may have something to do with the situation of early humans
45.What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.The full moon affects many things on the earth
B.The full moon is helpful to some animals to grow
C.There are still a lot of unknown about the full moon
D.Scientists are planning further research on the effects of the full moon
