You don’t have to be an athlete—or even desire to be one—to start running.
Just look at Jim Scott. In January 2003, a month after he retired. Scott began running. That November, he finished the New York City Marathon.
Scott, a radio-talk show host in Cincinnati, Ohio, didn’t do much in the way of exercise before then. He played golf as often as he could but found the time for regular exercise.
“When I turned 60, I thought it was a good time to reconsider things,” says Scott. “I start thinking, ‘These waist pants I’ve worn all my life are getting a bit tighter.’”
Scott decided he wanted to get in better shape and feel comfortable in his pants again. Oh, and there was one more motivation to try running: I’m married to a marathon runner,” he says.
Scott himself never intended to run a marathon. He simply wanted to go on Sunday morning runs with his wife, Donna Hartman, and keep on. But sometimes running can surprise you.
Maybe you just want to run around your neighborhood, or explore a new one. Maybe you want to challenge your body in a different way, to build up, or lose weight. Whatever your goals, running is an excellent exercise for a beginner to try.
“It’s cheap, easy, and the perfect thing to do with a friend,”says Isphording, a former marathoner and host of two health and fitness radio shows in Cincinnati. “You can go for a run in the morning and finish at your driveway with your hands in the air and you’ve had success before 7 am. This is a gift from you to you.”
24. What job did Scott take up?
A. A golfer.
B. An athlete.
C. A host.
D. A designer.
25. Why did Scott start to run?
A. To fight with illness.
B. To improve his golf skills.
C. To prepare for a marathon.
D. To lose weight.
26. We can know from the text that ____________ .
A. Scott didn’t mean to run a marathon at first
B. Scott ran with his wife every morning
C. Scott’s wife was concerned about his health
D. Scott’s dream was to be a marathon champion
27. What Isphording says suggests ____________ .
A. he thinks highly of running
B. he is tired of getting up late
C. he is training for marathon
D. his radio shows are very popular
C
There are an extremely large number of ants worldwide. Each individual(个体的) ant hardly weighs anything, but put together they weigh roughly the same as all of mankind. They also live
nearly everywhere, except on frozen mountain tops and around the poles. For animals their size, ants have been astonishingly successful, largely due to their wonderful social behavior.
In colonies(群体) that range in size from a few hundred to tens of millions, they organize their lives with a clear division of labor. Even more amazing is how they achieve this level of organization. Where we use sound and sight to communicate, ants depend primarily on pheromone(外激素), chemicals sent out by individuals and smelled or tasted by fellow members of their colony. When an ant finds food, it produces a pheromone that will lead others straight to where the food is. When an individual ant comes under attack or is dying, it sends out an alarm pheromone to warn the colony to prepare for a conflict as a defense unit.
In fact, when it comes to the art of war, ants have no equal. They are completely fearless and will readily take on a creature much larger than themselves, attacking in large groups and overcoming their target. Such is their devotion to the common good of the colony that not only soldier ants but also worker ants will sacrifice their lives to help defeat an enemy.
Behaving in this selfless and devoted manner, these little creatures have survived on Earth, for more than 140 million years, far longer than dinosaurs. Because they think as one, they have a collective(集体的) intelligence greater than you would expect from its individual parts.
28. We can learn from the passage that ants are ____________.
A. not willing to share food
B. not found around the poles
C. more successful than all other animals
D. too many to achieve any level of organization
29. Ants can use pheromones for ____________.
A. escape
B. communication
C. warning enemies
D. arranging labor
30. What does the underlined expression "take on" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Accept.
B. Employ.
C. Play with.
D. Fight against.
31. Which of the following contributes most to the survival of ants?
A. Their behavior.
B. Their size.
C. Their number.
D. Their weight
D
Children who spend more time outdoors may have a lower risk(风险) of becoming nearsighted(近视的), new research suggests.
In the study, researchers looked at about 1,900 schoolchildren. The scientists found that the kids who had been instructed to spend more time outdoors over three years were 23 percent less likely to develop nearsightedness during this time than those who had not been instructed to spend more time outdoors. Moreover, among the kids who did become nearsighted during the study, the degree to which their eyesight worsened was slightly smaller among those who spent more time outdoors.
The researchers selected six schools and required the children, whose average age was 7 at the start of the study, to attend one additional 60-minute class of outdoor activities during each school day for three years. The parents of these children were also encouraged to engage their children in outdoor activities after school, especially during weekends and holidays. The other half of the children, from another six schools, continued their usual activity patterns. After three years, 30.4 percent of the kids in the intervention(干预) group had become nearsighted, compared with 38.5 percent of the kids in the other group.
It is not clear exactl y why spending more time outside would benefit children’s eyesight, the researchers said. However, some research has suggested that the higher levels of light intensity found outdoors may increase the release of the chemical dopamine(多巴胺) of the eye. In turn, dopamine is known to restrain(抑制) the type of growth in the eye that is associated with nearsightedness.
Based on the new results, the researchers recommend that children spend more time outdoors because of the potential benefits to their eyesight. How ever, it’s important to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light, which can be damaging.
32. What did the children in the intervention group do during each school day?
A. Attend an extra class of outdoor activities.
B. Continue to do their usual activities.
C. Spend one hour in doing eye exercises.
D. Participate in outdoor activities with parents.
33. What can be inferred about the chemical dopamine?
A. It can contribute to poor sight.
B. It can damage people’s brain.
C. It is beneficial to eyesight.
D. It means low levels of light intensity.
34. What may be discussed in the following paragraph?
A. How to design outdoor activities for kids.
B. How to prevent kids becoming nearsighted.
C. How to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light.
D. How to encourage kids to join in outdoor activities.
35. Which can serve as the best title for the passage?
A. The More Time Outdoors, the Better
B. Kids May See Better if They Play Outside
C. It’s Time to Engage Kids in Outdoor Activities
D. Researchers Found a Cure for Nearsightedness

Tips for cooking on a Tight Schedule
From my experience, there are three main reasons why people don’t cook more often: ability, money and time. 36 Money is a topic I’ll save for another day. So today I want to give you some wisdom about how to make the most of the time you spend in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule:
1. Think ahead. The moments when I think cookin g is a pain are when I’m already hungry and there is nothing ready to eat. So think ahead of the coming week. When will you have time to cook? Do you have the right materials ready? 37
2. Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread? 38 It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future meal.
3. 39 This may surprise you, but one of the best tools for making cooking worth your time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can work
well with your appetite and schedule. The more you learn and the more you try, the more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule.
Hopefully that gives you a good start. 40 And don’t let a busy schedule discourage you from making some great changes in the way you eat and live!
A. Try new things.
B. Make three or four instead.
C. Ability is easily improved.
D. Understand your food better.
E. Cooking is a burden for many people.
F. A little time planning ahead can save a lot of work later on.
G. Let cooking and living simply be a joy rather than a burden.

Be smart about advertisements!
People cannot get away from advertisements where promise cheap goods and free gifts. Last week, I read a advertisement for a sale. Seeing the attractive prices for the goods, I couldn’t help drive to the supermarket. As the advertisement said, most of the thing there were much cheaper than usually. In no time, two baskets filled with ten bars of soap, two very nice-looking kitchen knives, and so on. When my husband arrived at home and saw the things I bought, he said, ‘What do you need both these things for?’ He is right. There was already enough soap at home, but there were already two knives in the kitchen drawer. I think I should be smart about advertisements in future and not be tricked by them.

Dear Wang Lin,
I’m writing to offer you some advice about the ways of English study.
In my opinion, forming good habits of learning English is very important, such as reading aloud, listening to English songs and communicating with native English speakers. You can also watch English TV programmes and English films. At the same time, you should try your best to enlarge your vocabulary, which may be the biggest challenge for you. What’s more, you should have confidence in yourself. Try to speak English whenever possible. Just as a saying goes, practice makes perfect. So you needn’t be afraid of making mistakes. In this way, you are sure to improve your English.
I hope that my advice will be helpful.
Sincerely yours,

M: Hi, Julie. Your phone is turned off and I guess you must be celebrating with your friends. Your mum and I watched TV yesterday evening and heard about the good news about your novel. Wow! This must feel as good as the day you graduated from university! No, even better than that! Anyway, I’m phoning just to say you’ve made me a very proud dad! I’m really delighted for you. You’re interested in writing all the time. I remember you joined a writing club at the age of 11 and attended many lectures there. You took part in several writing competitions but never won a thing but you never gave up, did you? You’ve worked so hard to realize your dream and you completely deserve what they’ve offered you. I can’t wait to see your new novel in the shops. When will it be coming out, do you know? Well, as I said, I am really proud of you. Speak soon. Love you.。
