四、阅读理解(每题2分,共30分)
A
I am an e-mail user. When I first started to use the e-mail system, I used to read all my e-mail. I didn’t have much mail. I gave my friends my e-mail address. Soon I had more mail than I wanted. Some of the mail was junk mail. I was worried. I didn’t want my mail to control me.
I’ve tried some methods to help me get control of my mail. First, I check my mail at the same time every day. Also I try to allow myself only 15-20 minutes every day to process my e-mail. This doesn’t always work, but I try. Sometimes I save the messages. Sometimes I just read them, maybe answer a few, and then delete(删除) them. Sometimes I’m not at all interested in a message, so I don’t even open it. I delete it right away. This is very much the way I go through the mail that the postal service
delivers to my home.
These methods are very simple. I have some friends who are very clever with computers. From time to time, they teach me new tricks for managing my e-mail. I’m still amazed at what e-mail can do for me! I’m still worried, howe ver, about having too much to read.

I was waiting for a phone call from my agent(经纪人). He had left a message the night before, telling me that my show was to be cancelled. I called him several times, but each time his secretary told me that he was in a meeting and that he would call me later. So I waited and waited, but there was still no call. Three hours passing by, I became more and more impatient. I was certain that my agent didn’t care about my work, and he didn’t care about me. I was overcome with that thought. I started to shout at the phone,“ Let me wait, will you? Who do you think you are?”
At that time I didn’t realize my wife was looking on. Without showing her surprise, she rushed in, seized the phone, tore off the wires, and shouted at the phone, “Yeah! Who do you think you are? Bad telephone! Bad telephone!” And she swe pt it into the wastebasket.
I stood watching her, speechless. What on earth?
She stepped to the doorway and shouted at the rest of the house, “Now hear this! All objects in this room —if you do anything to upset my husband, out you go!”
Then she turned to me, kissed me, and said calmly, “Honey, you just have to learn how to take control. ” With that, she left the room.
After watching a crazy woman rushing in and out, shouting at everything in sight, I noticed that something in my mood had changed. I was laughing. How could I have trouble with that phone? Her antics helped me realize I had been driven crazy by small things. Twenty minutes later my agent did call. I was able to listen to him and talk to him calmly.

Some people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Why read an article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with
pictures? Why read the life story of a famous man, when a short television program can tell you all that you want to know?
Television has not killed reading, however. Today, newspapers sell in very large numbers.
And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and enjoyment.Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are printed today as paperbacks, which are quite cheap. A paperback collection of short stories, for example,is always cheaper than an evening at the cinema or the theater, and you can keep a book forever and read it many times.
Books are a wonderful provider of knowledge and pleasure and some types of books should be in every home.Every home should have a good dictionary.A good encyclopedia (百科全书),though expensive,is useful, too, because you can find information on any subject.Besides, you can have such books as history books, science textbooks, cookbooks, and collections of stories and poems. Then from time to time you can take a book of poems off your shelves and read the thoughts and feelings of your favorite poets.
58. It can be inferred(推断) from the passage that___.
A.TV programs are a chief provider of knowledge
B.cinemas are the best choice in getting information
C.reading is a cheap way of learning and having fun
D.newspapers are an expensive way to enjoy oneself

A.Types of books in every home B.Kinds of dictionaries in every home.C.Lists of history books in every home. D.Collections of stories and poems in
every home.
61.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Fewer and fewer people will buy books.
B.A good dictionary should be kept in every home.
C.Books with hard covers sell better than paperbacks.
D.More people like TV programs about famous men.

What does an astronaut eat in space? This is a question that will puzzle many, as people rarely think of that. In the early space-travel years, astronauts ate dehydrated (脱水的) foods that were eaten through straws (吸管). In today’s space-age, the food that they eat is totally different. They eat food in the same way as people do on Earth.
Astronauts are able to prepare and eat a variety of foods in space. Some can be eaten in their natural form, like fruits, while some need to add water, like noodles. However, there are no refrigerators, so the food has to be prepared and eaten without being stored for a long time. When the astronauts are hungry, they simply eat the food by opening the food packages and with a fork, knife, and spoon.
Just like people on Earth, astronauts also eat three meals a day which include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sometimes they also eat snacks. The US space agency NASA has found out that an astronaut’s diet reduces by about 70% on a space mission, though he has a wide range of foods to choose from like nuts, chicken, beef, seafood, and candies. Drinks in the spaceship include coffee, tea, juices, and lemonade. Astronauts can also request a particular food that they would like to have in space. Scientists are always experimenting and trying out different space foods that can be offered to astronauts when on space missions.
62. Now astronauts eat ________ in space.
A. dehydrated foods
B. food as people do on Earth
C. totally different
D. food with a lot of water
63. The food the astronauts prepared ________ .
A. can’t be stored for a lon g time
B. is put into refrigerators
C. can be stored for a long time
D. can’t be kept in the food packages
64. In space, astronauts ________ like people on Earth.
A. only have nuts, chicken and beef
B. only have lunch for a day
C. only drink coffee, tea and lemonade
D. also eat three meals a day
65. What is the text mainly about?
A. Astronauts’ space life
B. Astronauts’ space work
C. Astronauts’ space food
D. Astronauts’ space experiments

I discovered the Xaphoon(魔笛), a small instrument made from bamboo, at a music festival in 1989. I was so in love with its sound that I decided to learn to play
it, and to make wonderful music wherever I went.
It took me three weeks to get a proper sound out of the simple-looking instrument, but slowly things improved. I played it everywhere I went. It’s so light to carry that I’ve played it on my travels in places as far away as India and Namibia.
There is no better way to make friends in a foreign country than with music. When I was in Nepal, I would throw the Xaphoon in my backpack and travel the country to places that could only be reached on foot. At each village I came to, I would find a comfortable place to sit down and start playing. Within ten minutes, all the villagers would come out, adults and children. Although they had all heard bamboo flutes before, they’d nev er heard anything that sounded as strong as the Xaphoon.
I was so impressed with Xaphoon that I even traveled to Hawaii to meet the man who invented it, and now I run my own business advertising his invention through my website. When the stresses(压力) of running business start to build up, all I have to do is to pick up my Xaphoon and begin to play. My worries disappear as the Xaphoon helps me to think about the most important things in life.
76 Where did the writer first see the Xaphoon?
77 Why could the writer travel with his Xaphoon easily?
78 According to the writer, what is the best way to make friends in foreign countries?
79 According to the last paragraph, where does the inventor of the Xaphoon live?
80 What does the writer usually do when he feels worried about his business?
