(2012·银川部分重点中学模拟)The 100kilogram blue
solar car invented by 10 students at Southwest
University's College of Engineering and Technology in
Chongqing has a top with four solar panels that charge the
battery that powers the auto. Its speed is between 30~40
kilometers per hour and when fully powered the car can be driven as far as 50 kilometers.“The car is easy to drive. A person without any driving experiences could learn to use it in several minutes. It fits for campus and the golf course,”said He Daijie, the leader of the invention team and a senior at the college. Or if one prefers it can be turned into moped scooter (电动助力车), he said.
Four students at Shenyang University of Technology in Liaoning Province invented a door light powered by electrical energy produced by opening and closing a door. When people open or close a door, the door produces mechanical energy that could be turned into electrical energy. After numerous tests for several months, the students fixed a joint lever above the door that connects the door and a speeding gear case to drive a generator attached to the door and send energy to storage cells. The storage cells provide electrical energy for the light.
A college student's dorm door is opened and closed about 60~100 times a day, which could produce 160~280 milliamps of electrical energy. It takes 160 milliamps to keep a light working for at least 10 hours, said Xia Yingbiao, one of the invention team members and a mechanical designer and manufacturing and automation junior. If these lights were used with the invention at the entrances in Shenyang schools, about 700,000 kilowatt hours a year would be saved, the team said. The university is applying patents for the invention.

(2012·郑州第二次质量预测)Why do men live a shorter life than women? The latest research indicates that men's hearts going into a rapid decline when they reach middle age could be the cause.
The research of ageing on the heart has shown that women's longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose much pumping power with age.
“We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20 percent~25 percent between 20 and 70 years of age,”said the head of the study, Samantha of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.
“Within the heart there are millions of cells which make it beat. Between the ages of 20 and 70, onethird of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Samantha.“This is part of the ageing process.”
What amazes scientists is that the female heart suffers very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70yearold woman's heart could work almost as perfectly as a 20yearold one's.
“This gender (性别) difference might give the reason why men live shorter than women,”said Samantha. They studied over 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 17 and 80, who are mainly healthy persons so as to reduce the influence of disease. “The team has yet to think about why ageing suffers a greater loss on the male heart,”said Samantha.
But there is also good news —men can enjoy the health of their hearts with regular exercise. Samantha stressed that women should also take regular exercise to stop their leg muscles getting weaker as they age.

(2012·福建质量检测)Anyone who experienced wet weather this summer will not be surprised to learn that this was the fourth year running that the UK suffered from a wet summer, which has never happened before in modern rainfall records dating back to 1914.
This summer was only slightly wetter than usual, though — the UK had 248.5 mm summer rainfall, 10 percent above average, according to Met Office figures.
The rainfall average over the whole country showed an interesting weather picture, though. The rain tended to come down in big showers, setting off flash floods. As a result, East Anglia in eastern UK had its third wettest August with more than double the normal rainfall, and the southeast had one of its dullest Augusts, with only two thirds its usual sunshine. And yet both these areas had been dry and sunny for the previous five months and seemed to be heading for longlasting drought (干旱).Western and northwestern areas had the complete opposite, though — extremely wet in July, followed by a dry August.Remarkably, the northwest had suffered from such longlasting drought that it led to bans on using hosepipes (橡皮软管).Although some weather companies predicted an extremely hot barbecue summer, it was only 0.6℃ above average across the UK.Even so, for the first half of this summer Glastonbury enjoyed a mudfree festival and Wimbledon remained hot and dry.It may not have broken any temperature records, but there were plenty of barbecues this summer.

任务型读写
Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?
In this fastpaced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more selfabsorbed and selfconcerned.
Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greed and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.
In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a
relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.
Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.
In conclusion, modern people appear to be more selfcentered than thos e in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.
Are Modern People Becoming More Selfish?
答案:1.Values 2.place 3.concerned 4.Behaviors
5.goals 6.Reasons petition 8.pressure
9.attitudes 10.benefit

(2012·太原五中第一学期月考)Some students think a difficult exam is just like a challenge and the more difficult it is, the more better it will be. They say a difficult exam can help students to find out what they are weak in their studies and improve their learning methods. Though, others were against a difficult exam. In their opinions, if it is very difficult, they may become discourage and feel terrible about their studies. I prefer an exam neither too difficult or too easy.
