8.4 An important inventionPart11. Have you ever stayed in a really nice/expensive hotel? (Experience Question: a good sample is supposed to briefly convey the feeling of that experience attached with the main details.)Yeah, I still remember the last New Year when my uncle invited all of my family members to stay 3 nights in the most up-scale hotel of my hometown. We all enjoyed the luxurious facilities, like the cozy bed and smooth velvit. I was even served breakfast every morning in my room. It’s fantastic.2. What services and facilities are usually available in hotels in your country? (Description Question: The most common mistake is to list all the ‘facilities’ one has ever known. A better answer should focus on a certain aspect and illustrate some details to support this aspect. If a student finds it too hard to get something sepcial, he/ she can try to categarise the target details and illustrate their functions one by one. )Sample 1: Well, in my mind, most of my country’s hotels could offer the majority of the basic facilities in their service, but the lockers or drawers with keys might be something special. You know, some business people whose work involes confidentiality would appreciate this facility very much.Sample 2: In my mind, most of my country’s hotels could offer the majority of the basic facilities in their service, like beds, TVs and showers with hot water. These facilities are essential to make the guests have less uncomfortable feelings in an unfamiliar environment. Most of the hotels also provide some wardrobes to the guests to hang their clothes.3. What factors are important when selecting a hotel? (Giving Opinion Questions: The sturcture of this kind of question is quite clear. The answerer is supposed to propose an opinion and give some explanation.)From my perspective, security is the thing I pay the utmost attention to. That includes not only just the CCTV cameras but also the maintaining of their facilities. We should, first of all, ensure ourselves not injured by accident when we choose to stay a while in some places.Part 2Describe an important invention (before the age of computers) that has influenced human society. You should say:what the invention iswhen and where it was inventedhow it is usedand explain how this invention has influenced society. In my mind, trains have been serving as an outcome of the desire to facilitate humans’ lives and never fall behind people’s expectations. As an art and literature student, I can’t exactly tell the origin of this great invention. However, I thought its creation could date back to the age of steam train in UK after the invention of team machine by James Watt. The increase of our life qualities should owe a lot to this invention for two reasons. (Background Information) For one thing, almost every citizen in today’s modern society enjoys the high frequency and speed of the railway service. Specifically, people only need to spend several hours to cover a long distance journey which would have taken them about a month in the past. One could even get into the next train in less an hour if the one issued by the ticket was missed. (Point 1 + Explanation)For another, the net of the rail tracks covers a large area of my country. No matter how remote your location is, you would have a relatively easier access to the nearest train station.Speaking of this, I should say thanks to the invention of train as a globetrotter. (Point 2 + Explanation)All in all, trains play an important role in our life and contribute a lot to our society. (Ending Sentence)Part 31.What changes have taken place in society as a result of the use of modern technology such as the television and the computer? (Description Question)The past decades witnessed a series of changes brought by high technologies. On the one hand, people benefit a lot from the convenience and efficiency supported by thoseadvanced technologies. For example, computer has speeded up the pace of almost every single work and is going to make more changes in the near future. On the other hand, high technology also invades into people’s daily lives and shapes people’s life styles. One of the most noticeable phenomenon must be the growing number of phubbers who care less and less about their surroundings.2. Do you think people rely too much on machines and modern technology nowadays? (Giving Opinion Question)Absolutely yes. People have already lost the ability to deal with even basic tasks without the assistance of technology. Specifically, we could see this from the overwhelmingoccupation of those so-called ‘user friendly’ electronic products. People even don’t have to read the instruction before they get familiar with the main functions.3. How do you think modern technology will change the way people work in the future? (Prediction Question)To tell the truth, people’s way of working is being changed by the most cutting-edgetechnology all the time and this will definitely be the tendency in the future. Obviously, people have been changing their minds to keep in tune with the high-tech to enhancetheir work efficiency. It’s natural to benefit from what we created.。

Section GUnderstanding Bee BehaviourAA bee’s brain is the size of a grass seed, yet in this tiny brain are encoded some of the most complex and amazing behavioural patterns witnessed outside humankind. For bees are arguably the only animals apart from humans which have their own language. Earlier this century Karl V on Frisch, a professor of Zoology at Munich University, spent decades of “the purest joy of discovery” unraveling the mysteries of bee behaviour. For his astonishing achievements he was awarded the Nobel Prize and it is from His work that most of today’s knowledge of what bees say to each other derives.B.It started simply enough. Von Frisch knew from experiments by an earlier researcher that if he put out a bowl of sweet sugar syrup, bees might at first take some time to find it but, once they had done so, within the hour, hundreds of other bees would be eagerly taking the syrup. Von Frisch realized that, in some way, messages were being passed on back at the hive, messages which said, ‘out there, at this spot, you’re going to find food.’CBut how was it happening? To watch the bees, V on Frisch constructed a glass-sided hive. He found that, once the scout bees arrived back at the hive, they would perform one of three dance types. In the first type, a returning scout scampered in circles, alternating to right and left, stopping occasionally to regurgitate food samples to the excited bees chasing after her. In the second dance, clearly and extended version of this round dance, she performed a sickle-shaped figure-of-eight pattern instead. In the third, distinctly different dance, she started by running a short distance in a straight line, waggling her body from side to side, and returning in a semi-circle to the starting point before repeating the process. She also stopped from time to time to give little bits of food to begging bees. Soon the others would excitedly leave the hive in search of food. Minutes later, many of them, marked by V on Frisch, could be seen eating at the bowls of sugar syrup.DExperimenting further, V on Frisch unraveled the mystery of the first two related types, the roundand the sickle dances. These dances, he concluded, told the bees simply that, within quite short distances of the hive there was a food source worth chasing. The longer and more excitedly the scout danced, the richer the promise of the food source. The scent she carried in her samples and on her body was a message to the other bees that this particular food was the one they were looking for. The others would then troop out of the hive and fly in spiraling circles ‘sniffing’ in the wind for the promised food.EAt first, Von Frisch thought the bees were responding only to the scent of the food. But what did the third dance mean? And If bees were responding only to the scent, how could they also ‘sniff down’ food hundreds of metres away from the hive, food which was sometimes downwind? On a hunch, he started gradually moving the feeding dish further and further away and noticed as he did so, that the dances of the returning scout bees also started changing. If he placed the feeding dish over nine metres away, the second type of dance, the sickle version, came into play. But once he moved it past 36 metres, the scouts would then start dancing the third, quite different, waggle dance. The measurement of the actual distance too, he concluded, was precise. For example, a deeding dish 300 metres away was indicated by 15 complete runs through the pattern in 30 seconds. When the dish was moved to 60 metres away, the number dropped to 11.FV on Frisch noted something further. When the scout bees came home to tell their sisters about the food source, sometimes they would dance outside on the horizontal entrance platform of the hive, and sometimes on the vertical wall inside. And, depending on where they danced, the straight portion of the waggle dance would point in different directions. The outside dance was fairly easy to decode: the straight portion of the dance pointed directly to the food source, so the bees would merely have to decode the distance message and fly off in that direction to find their food.GBut studying the dance on the inner wall of the hive, V on Frisch discovered a remarkable method which the dancer used to tell her sisters the direction of the food in relation to the sun. When inside the hive, the dancer cannot use the sun, so she uses gravity instead. The direction of the sun is represented by the top of the hive wall. If she runs straight up, this means that the feeding place is in the same direction as the sun. However, if, for example, the feeding place is 40° to the left of the sun, then the dancer would run 40° to the left of the vertical line. This was to be the first of von Frisch’s remarkable discoveries. Soon he would also discover a number of other remarkable discoveries. Soon he would also discover a number of other remarkable facts about how bees communicate and, in doing so, revolutionize the study of animal behaviour.Answer Keys:1. Section A VI2. Section B IV3. Write the appropriate numbers (i-x) in boxes 12-16 on your answer sheet.2. Paragraph C3. Paragraph DPEOPLE AND ORGANISATIONS: THE SELECTION ISSUEA In 1991, according to the Department of Trade and Industry, a record 48,000 British companies went out of business. When businesses fail, the post-mortem analysis is traditionally undertaken by accountants and market strategists. Unarguably organisations do fail because of undercapitalisation, poor financial management, adverse market conditions etc. Yet, conversely, organisations with sound financial backing, good product ideas and market acumen often underperform and fail to meet shareholders' expectations. The complexity, degree and sustainment of organisational performance requires an explanation which goes beyond the balance sheet and the "paper conversion" of financial inputs into profit making outputs. A more complete explanation of "what went wrong" necessarily must consider the essence of what an organisation actually is and that one of the financial inputs, the most important and often the most expensive, is people.B An organisation is only as good as the people it employs. Selecting the right person for the job involves more than identifying the essential or desirable range of skills, educational and professional qualifications necessary to perform the job and then recruiting the candidate who is most likely to possess these skills or at least is perceived to have the ability and predisposition to acquire them. This is a purely person/skills match approach to selection.C Work invariably takes place in the presence and/or under the direction of others, in a particular organisational setting. The individual has to "fit" in with the work environment, with other employees, with the organisational climate, style or work, organisation and culture of the organisation. Different organisations have different cultures (Cartwright & Cooper, 1991; 1992). Working as an engineer at British Aerospace will not necessarily be a similar experience to working in the same capacity at GEC or Plessey.D Poor selection decisions are expensive. For example, the costs of training a policeman areabout £ 20,000 (approx. US$ 30,000). The costs of employing an unsuitable technician on an oil rig or in a nuclear plant could, in an emergency, result in millions of pounds of damage or loss of life. The disharmony of a poor person-environment fit (PE-fit) is likely to result in low job satisfaction, lack of organisational commitment and employee stress, which affect organisational outcomes i.e. productivity, high labour turnover and absenteeism, and individual outcomes i.e. physical, psychological and mental well-being.E However, despite the importance of the recruitment decision and the range of sophisticated and more objective selection techniques available, including the use of psychometric tests, assessment centres etc., many organisations are still prepared to make this decision on the basis of a single 30 to 45 minute unstructured interview. Indeed, research has demonstrated that a selection decision is often made within the first four minutes of the interview. In the remaining time, the interviewer then attends exclusively to information that reinforces the initial "accept" or "reject" decision. Research into the validity of selection methods has consistently demonstrated that the unstructured interview, where the interviewer asks any questions he or she likes, is a poor predictor of future job performance and fares little better that more controversial methods like graphology and astrology. In times of high unemployment,! recruitment becomes a "buyer's market" and this was the case in Britain during the 1980s.F The future, we are told, is likely to be different. Detailed surveys of social and economic trends in the European community show that Europe's population is falling and getting older, The birth rate in the Community is now only three-quarters of the level needed to ensure replacement of the existing population. By the year 2020, it is predicted that more than one in four Europeans will be aged 60 or more and barely one in five will be under 20. In a five-year period between 1983 and 1988 the Community's female workforce grew by almost six million. As a result, 51% of all women aged 14 to 64 are now economically active in the labour market compared with 78% of men.G The changing demographics will not only affect selection ratios. They will also make it increasingly important for organisations wishing to mainta in their competitive edge to be more responsive and accommodating to the changing needs of their workforce if they are to retain and develop their human resources. More flexible working hours, the opportunity of work from home or job share, the provision of childcare facilities etc., will play a major role in attracting and retaining staff in the future.Questions 6-11Do the following statements agree with the views of the writer in Reading Passage 2In boxes 17-22 on your answer sheet writeYES if the statement agrees with the writerNO if the statement does not agree with the writerNOT GIVEN if there is no information about this in the passage6. Exercise AA commonly drawn distinction is between pre-history, i.e. the period before written record s- and history in the narrow sense, meaning the study of the past using written evidence. To archaeology, which studies all cultures and periods, whether with or without writing, the distinction between history and pre-history is a convenient dividing line that recognizes the importance of the written word, but in no way lessens the importance of the useful information contained in oral histories.Since the aim of archaeology is the understanding of humankind, it is a humanistic study, and since it deals with the human past, it is a historical discipline. But if differs from the study of written history in a fundamental way. The material the archaeologist finds does not tell us directly what to think. Historical records make statements, offer opinions and pass judgements. The objects the archaeologists discover, on the other hand, tell us nothing directly in themselves. In this respect, the practice of the archaeologist is rather like that of the scientist, who collects data, conducts experiments, formulates a hypothesis, tests the hypothesis against more data, and then, in conclusion, devises a model that seems best to summarise the pattern observed in the data. The archaeologist has to develop a picture of the past, just as the scientist has to develop a coherent view of the natural world.Complete the summary of the two paragraphs. Choose NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS from the passage for each answer.Much of the work of archaeologists can be done using written records but they find ___1_____ equally valuable. The writer describes archaeology as both a __2____ and a ___3_____. However, as archaeologists do not try to influence human behaviour, the writer compares their style of working to that of a ___4____.Exercise BA representative sample of language, compiled for the purpose of linguistic analysis, is known as a corpus. A corpus enables the linguist to make unbiased statements about frequency of usage, and it provides accessible data for the use of different researchers. Its range and size are variable. Some corpora attempt to cover the language as a whole, taking extracts from many kinds of text; others are extremely selective, providing a collection of material that deals only with a particular linguistic feature. The size of the corpus depends on practical factors, such as the time available to collect, process and store the data: it can take up to several hours to provide an accurate transcription of a few minutes of speech. Sometimes a small sample of data will be enough to decide a linguistic hypothesis; by contrast, corpora in major research projects can total millions of words. An important principle is that all corpora, whatever their size, are inevitably limited in their coverage, and always need to be supplemented by data derived from the intuitions of nativespeakers of the language, through either introspection or experimentation.Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS from the paragraphA linguist can use a corpus to comment objectively on ___5_____. Some corpora include a wide range of language while others are used to focus on a ___6____. The length of time the process takes will affect the ___7____ of the corpus. No corpus can ever cover the whole language and so linguists often find themselves relying on the additional information that can be gained from the ___8____ of those who speak the language concerned.Exercise CWe have found that the blind understand other kinds of visual metaphors as well. One blind woman drew a picture of a child inside a heart- choosing that symbol, she said, to show that love surrounded the child. With Chang Hong Liu, a doctoral student from China, I have begun exploring how well blind people understand the symbolism behind shapes such as hearts that do not directly represent their meaning. We gave a list of twenty pairs of words to sighted subjects and asked them to pick from each pair the term that best related to a circle and the term that best related to a square. For example, we asked: What goes with soft? A circle or a square? Which shape goes with hard? All our subjects deemed the circle soft and the square hard. A full 94% ascribed happy to the circle, instead of sad. But other pairs revealed less agreement: 79% matched fast to slow and weak to strong, respectively. And only 51% linked deep to circle and shallow to square. When we tested four totally blind volunteers using the same list, we found that their choices closely resembled those made by the sighted subjects. One man, who had been blind since birth, scored extremely well. He made only one match differing from the consensus, assigning ‘far’ to square and ‘near’ to circle. In fact, only a small majority of sighted subjects-53%- had paired far and near to the opposite partners. Thus, we concluded that the blind interpret abstract shapes as sighted people do. Complete the summary below using words from the box.NB Y ou may use any word more than once.A set of word __9___ was used to investigate whether blind and sighted people perceived the symbolism in abstract __10___ in the same way. But of course far fewer of them apply for these positions. The study, by recruitment consultants NB Selection shows that while one in six men who appear on interview shortlists get jobs, the figure rises to one in four for women.B The study concentrated on applications for management positions in the $ 45,000 to $110,000 salary range and found that women are more successful than men in both the private and public sectors. Dr Elisabeth Marx from London-based NB Selection described the findings as encouraging for women , in that they send a positive message to them to apply for interesting management positions. But she added, “We should not lose sight of the fact that significantly fewer women apply for senior positions in comparison with men.”C Reasons for higher success rates among women are difficult to isolate. One explanation suggested is that if a woman candidate manages to get on a shortlist, then she has probably already proved herself to be an exceptional candidate. Dr Marx said that when women apply for positions they tend to be better qualified than their male counterparts but are more selective and conservative in their job search. Women tend to research thoroughly before applying for positions or attending interviews. Men, on the other hand, seem to rely on their ability to sell themselves and to convince employers that any shortcomings they have will not prevent them from doing a good job.D Managerial and executive progress made by women is confirmed by the annual survey of boards of directors carried out by Korn/Ferry/Carre/Orban International. This year the survey shows a doubling of the number of women serving as non-executive directors compared with the previous year. However, progress remains painfully slow and there were still only 18 posts filled by women out of a total of 354 non-executive positions surveyed. Hilary Sears, a partner with Korn/Ferry, said , “Women have raised the level of grades we are employed in but we have still not broken through barriers to the top.”E In Europe a recent feature of corporate life in the recession has been the de-layering of management structures. Sears said that this had halted progress for women in as much as de-layering has taken place either where women are working or in layers they aspire to. Sears also noted a positive trend from the recession, which has been the growing number of women who have started up on their own.F in business as a whole, there are a number of factors encouraging the prospect of greater equality in the workforce. Demographic trends suggest that the number of women going into employment is steadily increasing. In addition a far greater number of women are now passing through higher education, making them better qualified to move into management positions.G Organisation such as the European Women’s Mangement development Network provide a range of opportunities for women to enhance their skills and contacts. Through a series of both。

P72Students from rural areas often find it difficult to access university education, so people think universities should make it easier for them to study at. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Does your name have any special meaning?Well, I am not sure. I guess there is something special about it, but I never asked my grandpa this question. He is the person who gave me my name.Well, I don’t know. It’s just a very common girl name. Actually, I was somewhat annoyed back in high school. People always mistook me for another girl in my class who had exactly the same name. Why do some people change their name?To be frank, I don’t know why but I can only assume that they are not very happy with their names given by others. They want to be in control of everything in their life. What are the advantages of studying instead of working? When studying, I only had to worry about my exams. But now, I have to worry about my unpaid bills, my mortgage an d my children’s exams.Do you agree that there should be a world language for everyone?Yeah, I can’t agree more. I really feel it’s a huge waste of time to learn a second language from other country when we can work out a way for everyone to speak the same language. I think Esperanto is a great idea.Do you agree that people will get married even later in the future? Why?I strongly feel that people are on the way to that, but it’s difficult to explain the reason. Maybe it’s probably th e increasing geographic mobility that makes we feel we have more choices when it comes to dating and marrying, so we keep thinking we can find someone better than we have.Yes, I believe so. Personally, I think people marry later partially because of a decline in the belief of a firm and long-term commitment. What’s more, living together without getting married is no longer considered disgraceful by young people, so the question for them is “why should we get married if we can live together without a weddi ng?”Do you have brothers or sisters? No. I don’t have brothers or sisters. Actually, I am the only daughter in my family. You know, most of the people about my age are the only child in their family. As you know, this is mainly due to the birth control policy in China.Do you prefer to live in a small family or in a large family?Well, I don’t really care whether it’s large or small, as long as I stay with my beloved family. Just as the saying goes, “You don’t choose yourfamily. That’s the God’s gift to you, as you are to them.”It’s true that people living in a smaller family enjoy more mobility and independence, but if I get to choose, I would prefer a large family with relatives caring for, loving and supporting each other, which I think is more important to me.Do you live in a flat or a house?Well, I live in a flat. It’s a kind of old building which has been converted into a six-floor flat house. And I live on the third floor. Can you describe the community you live?I moved to my new apartment only about a year ago. My community is a relatively new residential area with several high-rises around. To be frank, I don’t even know my next-door neighbor. It seems that people all keep to themselves, which is not what I like about my community. Why are holidays important to you?Having a holiday is taking a break. During holidays I can do something I really I want to do, say reading a book I didn’t finish 2 years ago or hanging around with friends to catch up things. How has housework changed in your family in the past few years? Obviously, household chores are no longer for women exclusively. Men are increasingly aware of the significance of sharing housework with their wives, which is beneficial for the family harmony.Wha t’s your favorite sport?I’m very into basketball, you know. I’m a huge fan of Michael Jordon. Playing basketball is a lot of fun. For example, you get to meet new friends. Why is exercise good for you?It is without doubt that doing exercise can be very rewarding. It helps to control body weight, maintain strength and improve immunity. What’s more, doing exercise helps to develop co-ordination and team spirit. Why do you think some people are very into extreme sports?I think the fear that drives many people away from the risks of extreme sports may be the same ingredient that keeps others coming back for more. For some, life is all about adventures, risks and challenges. Can we learn more from television or from books? Both are educational, I believe. Television appeals to young teenagers more, whereas books are attracted to older people. Personally, I’m more into reading. Just like what people say, “if you read a lot of books, you’re considered well-read; but if you watch a lot of TV, yo u’re not consideredwell-viewed.What do you think are healthy foods?Vegetables, of course. All vegetables are naturally low in fat and full of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Actually, vegetables are a must on my diet.To be frank, I don’t really see the point of arranging foods into a “healthy food” class or an “unhealthy food” class. What we should realize is that it is our choice of food and our eating habit that really matters. So I feel it is really unfair to describe pizza, chips and ice cream as junk food. Without them, eating seems to be less fun.Can you consider why fast food restaurants in your town are popular? It’s true that fast food restaurants like KFC and McDonald’s are very popular here. They can be found on almost all high streets. I guess people are always ready to try some exotic foods from other countries. And these western fast food restaurants are clean, casual and comfortable, which have become fashionable social bases. Can you consider the difference between men and women in their shopping habits?Concerning shopping, I think men and women hold distinct attitude. For men, shopping happens when their socks wear out. However, women shop even if the wardrobes are full. Apparently, women’s desire to shop is endless and this is something men can never understand. Is it helpful to teach music courses in high school?Certainly. It makes a good compensation for other courses like math and physics, which I think are very dull and boring. Singing together with my schoolmates is much more fun.Are there any negative effects if children are taught to play a musical instrument?Well, it is hard to say. Personally, I believe that it is undoubtedly of great benefit to a child’s musical development. However, some children who are forced by their parents to play a musical instrument don’t really think so. I guess they have their reasons. How do the old people look at young people fashion? If you ask me, though I haven’t hit 50, I think a daringly fashionable miniskirt is always considered dangerously inappropriate by old people. But I can see why they have strong reaction. Once you hit 50, it is time to think twice about miniskirts. What do you think of the fashion today?“Unexplainable” is the only word for me to explain fashion. But I do feel there are many people strongly influenced by it, otherwise there won’t be so many fashion victims walking on the streets, who wear unreasonably expensive clothes but look perfectly ridiculous. In what ways has tourism changed your country?I’m not so sure but by attracting more foreign visitors, tourism helps to boost economy and create more jobs. At the same time, in order to enhance the city’s image, the government pays more attention to the renovation and maintenance of the infrastructure. So tourism benefits not only individuals but a country as well. What is the public transportation like your town?I think the choices of public transportation are sufficient here in thetown. There are taxi, bus and subway which is a relativelynewcomer. However, like most of the other big cities, traffic congestion was and is still a serious problem. Now with the government’s urge to revitalize automobile industry, the number of private cars is dramatically increasing, which makes the present problem even worse. How do you think it could be improved? This is a question needing quite some consideration. As far as I’m concerned, what sounds more feasible at the moment is to discourage private car driving but to schedule more public transport like buses. Can you consider any negative effects watching TV might cause? Undoubtedly, TV entertains people. However, TV violence is what worries parents most. In order to attract and hold audiences, TV violence has become so graphic that children may be more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways towards others. The effects of television seem to be more intensive on younger viewers. The more time children spend watching TV, the less time they are spending doing other important activities like reading, getting exercise, being outdoors and talking with families. Consequently children have such problems like lower reading scores, obesity and poor physical fitness.Do you think festivals are important for a country?Yes, I think so. Every country has traditional festivals. These festivals, apart from its religious importance, also help in creating social, cultural andemotional bonds among people. Besides, people get to have holidays during big festivals like Chinese New Year. How do you compare the Chinese festivals with the western festivals? As far as I know, western festivals are counted according to solar calendar, whereas Chinese festivals use lunar calendar. That’s why Chinese New Year is not the first day of the year on solar calendar. One another difference is that Chinese festivals are not as religious as the western ones.Do you agree that weather could affect people’s mood or personality?I think so. From what I read in the book, when we are exposed to sunlight, our body makes lots of Vitamin, which produce a substance in the brain to affect our mood. If we don’t have enough of this substance, we can become depressed. I guess certain amount of sunbath makes us happier. How do you usually make friends?Frankly speaking, I’m not the sort of person who always takes the initiative to say hi to a total stranger. So most of my high school and college friends are either my next seat fellow or dorm mate. It is the geography that makes people and me much closer.Do you think friends are important to you?Certainly. Friends are not only those who we have fun with; they are the people we turn to for help. Besides, our relationships with friends partially determine our preferences, attitudes and values. Friends always share something in common. What is the relationship between colors and personality?I firmly believe that different personality types are influenced by different shades of colors. I think those outgoing and enthusiastic people prefer warmcolors like yellow, peach and beige. For those sensitive and shy people, blue and purple are their favorites.Speaking Part Two-Describe a Person/PeopleDescribe a family member you are close to.You should say:Who is he/she.What does he/she do.What does he/she look like. And why are you two close. The person I am most close to in my family is my mother. My mum is a petite woman with short wavy hair. She is in her mid 50s but still looks quite young for her age. My mum works in a primary school. She teaches Chinese. She is very patient and gentle so the children in the school quite like her and so do the neighbor kids. When staying with young children, my mum always looks young and passionate. People all say that I look like my mum more than my father. I have got my mother’s big eyes and high cheekbones. In many ways, we share many interests in common. We both like listening to pop music and watching comedies. On weekends, we often go shopping together. But weare also different. My mum fancies exotic plants and she lovesgardening. Our balcony is always green throughout the year. But I have no idea about gardening, no interest at all. To me, my mum sometime is more like a friend. We share many things and do a lot of things together. She is very supportive and encouraging. She always gives me advice on my study and work but she never controls me. She lets me choose my own path in my life. So, yes, my mum is the one I like most in my family.Describe a person you admire. You should say:Who is he/she.What does he/she look like. What is your relationship. And why do you admire him/her.The person I admire is my father. My father is a stocky man of average height. He is in his mid fifties. He’s got small eyes and wears a moustache. He is also going a bit thin on top. In fact, he is going bald. My father is not attractive but he is the person who has always provided encouragementand support for my family. He displays strength andtoughness but has never failed to express his love for me and my mother. He is very sincere and loyal to his friends and family. He is not a rich man but he has provided well for his family by working hard. My father has made huge sacrifices to save enough money to educate me through university and to buy a good apartment in the city centre. My father lives a small but valuable life. In my mind, he is a great man with many outstanding qualities.Describe your family. You should say:How many people are there.Who are they and what do they do.What each person is likeAnd how do you get alone.I live in a big family. By saying “big”, I mean I live with my parents and grandparents. It’s not common nowadays to live with grandparents but I do enjoy it. My grandparents are very close. From the old pictures, I find that my grandmother was a very enchanting young lady. She and my grandfather get on like a house on fire, a very enviable couple. Looking at my grandfather, my father and me, you can see a strong family likeness there. We’ve a ll got the same big nose. I take after my father both in looks and character. A real chip off the old block. My mum always says I get my quick temper from myfather. My father was a policeman before retirement. He used to be strongand well-built, but now he has put on much weight and looks slightlytubby. Actually my grandparents have four children. My father is the youngest and he has two big brothers and an elder sister. They all live too far away from us so we very rarely see them. But we still gather together on some big holidays. So, this is my family.Describe a person you work with. You should say:Who is he/she.When and where did you first meet him/her.How is he/she.And how do you two get alone.I would like to say something about my ex-boss who I worked with 3 years ago when I graduated from college. I still remember the time I got my first job. My first boss was very a very impressive man. He is a middle-aged man, well-groomed, clean-shaven and looks decent. He wears a pair ofglasses. The first time I met him, he appeared to be nice and easy-going. But once I worked for him, I found myself totally wrong about him. Appearance can be really deceptive. He actually was a very tough man. He’s never generous to any mistakes, even to those teeny weenies. He was so unpredictable and unfathomable that you never knew what he was thinking about, which made him more intimidating. Apart from these, he was still a good boss. He was a man with priority in order and I did learn to work efficiently and under pressure. There were some hard times working for him, but you could always feel the push and see your self-improvement.Describe a neighbourYou should say:Who is he/she.When and where did you first meet him/her.How is he/she.And how do you two get alone.Well, I only moved to my new apartment about 1 month ago. To be frank, I don't know quite well about my neighbours and the community is new to me as well. But I know there is a little girl and her parents living next door to my apartment. I got to know this little girl about three weeks after their movingin. I still remember that day when she found herself locked outside the door after school because she forgot to take keys with her. I invited her to my apartment and then we knew each other. She is 11 years old. She always ties a ponytail with a ribbon on it. She is a lovely chubby girl with big eyes and bushy eyebrows. What she hates most about her face are the freckles all over her cheeks, although I find them really cute. She always complains to me about those brown spots and afraid that she has to wear heavy make-up when she grows up. It’s very funny to listen to an eleven-year-old girl complaining about her appearance, which makes her sound mature for her age. She isvery keen on fashion and her dream is to become a fashion designer. That's all I know about my little neighbour. I guess I need to know more about them. You know there is an old Chinese saying: a next-door neighbour is more helpful than a relative living miles away.Describe a famous personYou should say:Who is he/she.How did you know about him/her.Why is he/she famous. And how he/she influenced you.If I have to choose from so many famouse people I know, I have to say "Tom Hanks". I’m a huge fan of Tom Hanks. He is my favourite actor. The firsttime I came to know about him was from one of his most successful acting in “Forrest Gump”. In the movie he played one of his best roles as a simple, decent and honest man whose body grew to maturity but remained a child in heart and spirit. Tom’s performance was very impressive. His brilliant acting made the character so convincing and memorable that I sometimes almost believed that Tom was playing himself in this movie. I always had the same feeling each tim e I enjoyed Tom Hank’s movie, “Philadelphia”, “Sleepless in Seattle”, “Saving Private Ryan”, “You’ve got mail”, “Cast away”, “Band of Brothers”. There is no doubt of his acting ability. And one another reason I am completely taken by him is that he is the epitome of a nice man, a strong willed and determined hero in men’s eyes, a lovable and charming man in women’s eyes. You see, Tom is not only a successful actor playing different roles in movies but a perfect man as he play himself in the real life.。

Population aging, which has made it difficult for many companies to recruit eligible young employees, pushes people to rethink whether compulsory retirement has been out-of-date. In my opinion, we should abolish this regulation and create more flexible legal articles instead, to protect the benefits of both workers and employers. One of the reasons is that mandatory retirement results in a huge waste of human resources. People differ in innate talents, physical conditions and career types, so a unified requirement for their retiring age will probably prevent them from continually contributing to the society. For example, an elder prestigious professor will be required to stop working when he reaches the age for retirement, no matter how well his body function is and how enthusiastic of him to commit to his job. It is counterproductive for him to realize potential to the utmost and achieve a sense of accomplishment, thereby causing a waste of his knowledge and intelligence. This regulation is likely to lead to skills gap in many corporations and end with the shortfall of capital. This is particularly the case for companies in high-technology area, in which the manager needs to spend lots of money and effort on recruiting and training new workers after the old stuff retire, especially when young talents are more and more difficult to findunder the aging trend. Consequently, the lower quality of work outputs at the meantime will exert a detrimental effect on their financial power and competitiveness. Some people may argue that if the mandatory retirement is abolished, the benefits that employees are endowed with will be easily disregarded. It is possible for them to suffer from labor exploitation of greedy superiors, and be required to take large amount of workloads to maximize companies’ interests. As a result, they are deprived the chance of enjoying the happiness of family reunion and are at greater risks of sickness. In my mind, however, this concern can be addressed through specific legislation, like setting rules specialized in labor-incentive works, but intellectual works should be in the same case.As suggested above, considering the potential damages which are brought by compulsory retirement, it should be abolished.
