BOOK 4 Unit 1Why not carry on her good work教案
一、整体设计思路Idea of lesson design:This reading is the second reading of this unit. So this lesson is an integration of reading and writing. The reading serves for the writing, and thus more emphasis should be put on the development of students’writing ability. And eventually, they will be able to produce a descriptive writing of a great person independently. In addition to developing students’reading and writing abilities, this lesson will alsointroduce students to choices they will have to make about their own future careers. Also, the students will be guided to discover an effective way of doing research----by asking questions. The analysis of teaching materials:This reading is about the life and career of a famous Chinese doctor---Lin Qiaozhi, who was important for women in China because she made great achievements on women’s diseases and the problem of having babies. She inspired many people to carry on her good work. Instead of introducing Lin Qiaozhi directly, the passage introduces her from the perspective of a middle school student. Like the writer of the passage, my students may have no clear idea what they would like to do in the future. Therefore, the learning of this lesson may make my students begin to think about their future career choices seriously and at the same time learn from the author how to make the important decision. So in the process of designing this lesson, emphasis shouldn’t be put only on information about Lin Qiaozhi. Besides, in this reading, the author asks herself quite a few questions when researching on Lin Qiaozhi. The students should be guided to discover the author’s method of doing research, that is, asking questions. Actually, this is how scientists and other researchers find out more about their chosen subject.Senior One students are always curious and willing to learn new knowledge. And the topic of this unit is similar to what they have learned in the sister unit NELSON MANDELA---A MODERN HERO (Unit 5, Module 1). So the students have already had some knowledge about great people. With the prior knowledge, it is not difficult for students to learn this lesson, for example, talking about the good qualities that a great person should have. Hopefully, this passage can stimulate students’passion in learning and providea role model for them to learn from.二、教学目标Teaching objectives:1.Knowledge objectives:1)To learn about Lin Qiaozhi and her achievements.2)To learn the words used to describe the qualities of a great person.3)To learn one effective way of doing research---by asking questions.2. Ability objectives:1) Be able to think actively and independently.2) To learn how to write a description of a great person.3. Emotional objectives1) Students can be inspired by Lin Qiaozhi’s hard work and devotion to her career.2) The students can give a thought to their future career choices.2) Students’questioning spirit can be developed to some extent.三、教学重难点Teaching important points:Let students use what they have learnt through reading to describe the great woman---Lin Qiaozhi.Teaching difficult points:Guide the students to discover one way of doing research---by asking questions.四、教学方法Teaching methods:Situational teaching method, task-based teaching method五、教具Teaching aidsBlackboard, computer六、教学过程Step I: Lead-inT: College Entrance Examination is drawing near. 新人教版 Book 4 Unit 1 Woman of Achievement 课文
Book 4 Unit 1 Women of achievementPart I a Student of African WildlifeIt is 5:45 am and the sun is just rising over Gombe National Park in East Africa. Follow ing Jane’s way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the forest. Jane has studied these families of chimps for many years helped understand how much they behave like human s. Watch ing a family of chimps wake up is our first activity of the day. This mean s going back to the place where we left the family sleeping in a tree the night before. Everybody sits and waits in the shade of the trees while the family begins to wake up and move off. Then we follow as they wander into the forest. Most of the time, chimps either feed or clean each other as a way of showing love in their family. Jane warn s us that our group is going to be very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she is right. However, the evening makes it all worthwhile. We watch the mother chimp and her babies play in the tree. Then we see them go to sleep together in their nest for the night. We realize that the bond between member s of a chimp family is as strong as in a human family.Nobody before Jane fully understood chimp behaviour. She spent years observing and record ing their daily activities. Since her childhood she had wanted to work with animals in their own environment. However, this was not easy. When she first arrive d in Gombe in 1960, it was unusual for a woman to live in the forest. Only after her mother came to help her for the first few months was she allow ed to begin her project. Her work changed the way people think about chimps. For example, one important thing she discover ed was that chimps hunt and eat meat. Until then everyone had thought chimps ate only fruit and nuts. She actually observe d chimps as a group hunting a monkey and then eating it. She also discovered how chimps communicate with each other, and her study of their body language helped her work out their social system. For forty years Jane Goodall has been outspoken about making the rest of the world understand and respect the life of these animals. She has argue d that wild animals should be left in the wild and not used for entertainment or advertisement s. She has helped to set up special places where they can live safe ly. She is lead ing a busy life but she says: “Once I stop, it all comes crowd ing in and I remember the chimps in lab oratories. It’s terrible. It affect s me when I watch the wild chimps. I say to myself, ‘Aren’t they lucky?’And then I think about small chimps in cage s though they have done nothing wrong. Once you have seen that you can never forget ...”She has achieve d everything she wanted to do: working with animals in their own environment, gain ing a doctor’s degree and showing that women can live in the forest as men can. She inspire s those who want to cheer the achievement s of women.Part II Why not Carry on her Good Work?I enjoyed English, biology, and chemistry at school, but which one should I choose to study at university? I did not know the answer until one evening when I sat down at the computer to do some research on great women of China.By chance I came across an article about a doctor called Lin Qiaozhi, a specialist in women’s disease s. She lived from 1901 to 1983. It seemed that she had been very busy in her chosen career, travel ling abroad to study as well as writing books and articles. One of them caught my eye. It was a small book explain ing how to cut the death rate from having and caring for babies. She gave some simple rule s to follow for keeping babies clean, healthy and free from sick ness. Why did she write that? Who were the women that Lin Qiaozhi thought needed this advice? I looked carefully at the text and realize d that it was intend ed for women in the countryside. Perhaps if they had an emergency they could not reach a doctor.Suddenly it hit me how difficult it was for a woman to get medical train ing at that time. That was a generation when girls’education was always place d second to boys’. Was she so much clever er than anyone else? Further reading made me realize that it was hard work and determination as well as her gentle nature that got her into medical school. What made her succeed later on was the kind ness and consideration she showed to all her patient s. There was story after story of how Lin Qiaozhi, tired after a day’s work, went late at night to deliver a baby for a poor family who could not pay her.By now I could not wait to find out more about her. I discovered that Lin Qiaozhi had devote d her whole life to her patient s and had chosen not to have a family of her own. Instead she made sure that about 50,000 babies were safely delivered. By this time I was very excited. Why not study at medical college like Lin Qiaozhi and carry on her good work? It was still not too late for me to improve my studies, prepare for the university entrance examination s, and….。
