Analytical Design Method of Multiway Dual-BandPlanar Power Dividers With Arbitrary Power DivisionAbstractIn this paper, a novel closed-form design method of generalized Wilkinson power dividers is proposed. By using this method, the power divider could be designed to be arbitrary-way (N-way) with arbitrary power division, and arbitrary dual-band operations in a pure planar structure. A previous dual-band unequal Wilkinson power divider is extended to arbitrary terminal impedances case, thus, it can be used to construct multiway planar power dividers through the combination of the two-section dual-frequency transformers. To obtain three-way(or any odd-way) power dividers with dual-band and unequal power division features, a new developed recombinant structure is employed. This recombinant structure consists of a two-way dual-band unequal power divider/combiner without any isolation structures. Furthermore, the complete design procedures and analytical equations of these proposed generalized power dividers are presented. To verify our proposed design approach in theory, several three-way and four-way power dividers with different dual-band applications and various power divisions are designed and simulated. Finally, a practical three-way power divider operating at both 0.6 and 2.45 GHz with a power dividing ratio of3:5:1 is fabricated in microstrip technology as a typical example. The measured results of the fabricated power divider verify our proposed idea.Index Terms—Arbitrary power division, dual-band, dual-frequency, multiway, planar, unequal, Wilkinson power divider.I. INTRODUCTIONPower dividers are widely used in many communication circuits such as power amplifiers and antenna arrays. For example, the popular three-port power divider with a planar structure is a two-way Wilkinson divider. The Wilkinson divider includes multiway application, but the 3-D floating common node makes its planar implementation become very difficult, and the analyzed structure can not satisfy arbitrary dual-band applications. On one hand, several N-way planar power dividers have been investigated in data, but the problem of unequal power division and dual-band applications remain unresolved. On the other hand, generalized unequal two-way and multiway power dividers were reported, while the dual-band applications were not considered. Recently, a new N-way meta-material power divider has been presented appear in data. Although this N-way meta-material power divider has a planar structure, it is only for low-frequency (less than 1.5GHz due to the operating frequency limitation of the practical lumped elements) and single-band applicationsIn recent years, many novel dual-band distributed-circuit power dividers with equal or unequal power divisions were developed. The main limitation of these dual-band power dividers is that they all have merely two-way configuration. Ingeneral, the design of wideband power dividers only focuses on its operation center-frequency and bandwidth. However, the center frequency ratio of dual band is one of significant parameters, which are used as design goals in the design of dual-band power dividers. Meanwhile, the performance at the frequencies between these desired two bands is not considered in initial requirements.In order to realize generalized Wilkinson power dividers with various features including multiple ways, unequal power division, dual-band applications and planar structures, we proposed a novel and complete design methodology in this paper. This generalized Wilkinson power divider is constructed by incorporating the extended dual-band unequal (or equal) power divider cells, the recombinant structures and the two-section dual-frequency transformers. The design theories and procedures for this proposed power dividers are given. As typical examples, circuit configurations and closed-form design equations of three-way and four-way dual-band unequal planar power dividers are obtained. For theoretical verification, several ideal examples with different dual-band applications and various power divisions are presented based on the given analytical design methods, and the corresponding calculated electrical parameters and simulated results are provided in details. For further experimental verification, a fabricated microstrip three-way power divider operating at both 0.6 and 2.45 GHz with a power dividing ratio of 3:5:1 is demonstrated. Good agreement between the simulated and measured results has been shown.II BASIC CONSIDERATION OF MULTIWAY POWER DIVIDER’S PLANAR CONFIGURATIONSThe basic planar circuit structures for the proposed power dividers are illustrated in Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 1(b), a recombinant design concept has been applied to obtain a novel three-way dual-band arbitrary planar power divider, where the rightmost two-way dual-band arbitrary (unequal) power divider is used as a recombinant structure ( ―recombiner‖ in Fig. 1(b)). Since the phases of the two transmission ways W1 and W2 are the same, the isolation element can be safely ignored because it contributes nothing to affecting the external performance in this generalized divider. Two dual-band impedance transformers with equal electrical lengths are utilized to make all the output signals in-phase and the output ports matched at the desired two bands. In addition, note that all the output ports can be isolated effectively because each two-way dual-band unequal power divider cell in the whole circuit has ideal isolation performance.As shown in Fig. 1(c), a typical four-way (2N,N=1,2….)dual-band arbitrary power divider can be obtained by directly interconnecting three basic two-way dual-band unequal power divider cells. It is necessary to point out that additional interconnecting transmission lines can be used between two adjacent power divider cells.When the number of ways increases, the planar configurations of multiway dual-band arbitrary power dividers will become more flexible. For example, there are three typical planar configurations of five-way generalized power dividers, which are shown in Figs. 2(a)–2(c). Similarly, additional interconnecting transmission lines should be used to obtain in-phase characteristics in dual-band applications.Here, there are two kinds of interconnecting transmission lines: 1) compulsory lines which are used as phase shifters to achieve in-phase (such as Line 1 in Fig. 2) or as impedance transformers to realize dual-band matching (such as Line 2 in Fig. 2); 2) optional lines (not shown in Figs. 1 and 2) which are just used to modify the total external characteristic and enhance implementation flexibility of the proposed power dividers such as the interconnecting transmission lines discussed in [16]. This is beyond the point discussed in this paper.Fig. 2. PLANAR CIRCUIT AND DESIGN THEORY OF THE EXTENDED DUAL-BAND UNEQUAL POWER DIVIDER CELL The closed-form design equations of two kinds of two-way dual-band unequal power dividers have been proposed. According to the measured frequency performance of the microstrip examples, the basic two-way dual-band unequal power divider cell without output ports-matching struct ures (―PDCell‖ for short) chosen and extended to replace the dual-band unequal power divider cell in Fig. 1(a). The extended PDCell will be used in the following sections because its dual-band operating frequency bandwidth is relatively wide while the isolation structure is optional(design flexibility).Fig. 3 shows the circuit configuration of the extended PDCell. Its terminal impedances are arbitrary real values. In other words, their values are not limited to and can be flexibly defined according to different design requirements. In addition,we assume that the center frequencies of the designated dual band are f1and f2=hf1,h>1( h is the frequency ratio). It is also interesting that three kinds of isolation structures (the parallel RLC, the pure resistor R, and the series RLC) should be chosen according to the center frequency-ratio of the designed dual band for the PDCell. Note that the pure resistor R is only used when the frequency ratio equals to three. In fact, this special case is the traditional two-way single band unequal Wilkinson power divider. Thus, only two isolation structures including parallel and series RLC are shown in Fig. 3 for achieving arbitrary dual-band applications.Fig. 3. Extended two-way dual-band unequalpower divider with generalized terminal impedances.For obtaining arbitrary power dividing with lossless transmission, ideal isolation and matching at dual band simultaneously, the analysis method of the transmission line theory and circuit theory, can be applied. The final results are summarized in this section without process details since the similar analysis was published.To begin with, the electrical lengths of transmission lines shown in Fig. 3 are discussed. For simplicity in the design, all the electrical lengths of different sectiontransmission lines are defined to as shown in Fig. 3. In fact, the electrical lengths can be different for each section transmission line (such as and) in this PDCell. Therefore, the design does not need any optimization algorithm; it seems that the total procedure is simple and effective.IV. THEORETICAL DESIGN GUIDELINE OF MULTI-WAY DUAL-BAND UNEQUAL PLANAR POWER DIVIDERSThe theoretical design guideline of the proposed generalized Wilkinson power dividers is discussed in this section. Fig. 4 shows a typical multiway dual-band unequal planar power divider with power definitions.A. Power ConsiderationsAs discussed above, the proposed generalized Wilkinson power divider simultaneously has four main characteristics: planar structure if implemented by microstrip or stripline, multiple ways, arbitrary power dividing, and dual-band operations. In order to obtain all these characteristics in one structure, the two-side power distributions of the total generalized Wilkinson power divider shown in Fig. 4 should have the following relationshipsIn Fig. 4, the input and output power for internal two-way dual-band unequal or equal power divider cells should satisfy the following equation:The (11) and (12) indicate that all of the power divider and combiner cells don’s have any transmission loss in the design procedure.B. Design ProcedureAssume that it is required to design an N-way dual-band planar power divider with a power dividing ratio of(a1,a2…. a N) .Based on the above discussion, the design procedure of multiway dual-band unequal planar power dividers includes the following steps, which are as follows.1)When the value of is defined and fixed, the configuration can be chosenaccording to the design concept of planar configuration in Section II. Thebasic configuration structures as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are preferred.2) According to conservation of energy, there is a relationship between the power dividing ratio(a,a2…. a N) and power distributions, which is given by13) Once the values of are calculated, the total power distributions are obtained bycombining general (11) and (12), thus, the normalized power dividing ratio and terminal impedances (some of them should be chosen manually) are easilyobtained by using the relationship between power dividing ratio and terminal impedances given in (3).4) The basic power divider cell, namely, PDCell in Fig. 3, is chosen, and all of theelectrical parameters are obtained using the closed-form design (1)–(9) or (10).5) Based on the type of transmission lines such as microstrip or stripline and thespecific substrate such as FR4 or RT Duroid series, all of planar circuitdimensions are obtained using transmission line calculators. Until now, the total design of the required power divider is finished. Finally, we can draw thepractical printed circuit board (PCB).6) Of course, many kinds of commercial full-wave simulation tools such as Sonnet, HFSS, CST, and XFDTD can be used to verify the S-parameter performance of the designed PCB power dividers. If the full-wave electromagnetic simulated results are not perfect, the dimensions maybe are optimized carefully. THREE-WAY DUAL-BAND UNEQUALPLANAR POWER DIVIDERSIn this section, a three-way dual-band unequal power divider with a planar structure is proposed based on the theoretical design guideline given in Section IV. The Design Circuit Structure and its Design EquationsIn this proposed three-way dual-band unequal planar power dividers shown in Fig. 5, the PDCell discussed in Section III and shown in Fig. 3 is applied. Note that all of parameters are illustrated in Fig. 5. Because the power dividing ratio is arbitrary, the combination of PDCells and dual-frequency impedance transformers is very flexible and may include symmetry and asymmetry structures, i.e., dual-band equal or unequal power divider cells, simultaneously.If the power dividing ratio of this three-way unequal planar power divider is F:2F3:F4at two defined band. The normalized power distributions are calculated according to (13). The result isBased on the relationships (11) and (12), the accurate energy constraints of normalized power distributions defined in Fig. 5 can be expressed asNote that the values of parameters in (15) should be positive. Once the values of normalized power distributions are obtained from (15), the values of terminalimpedances of each PDCell(R2CP ,R3CP,R2DP,R3DP,R2EP,R3EP)can be definedmanually or obtained under the energy constraints.The typical dual-frequency impedance transformer in [17] is chosen as the output dual-band impedance matching networks in Fig. 5. Three-Way Dual-Band Unequal Planar Power DividersThree three-way planar power dividers with flexible dualband operations and different power divisions are designed. The standard port impedance equals toZ0=50Ω.θC=θD=θE=θF=π/(1+h)at f1is applied. Other defined and calculated parameters are given in Table I. Fig. 6 shows the ideal simulated results. TheS-parameter performance of Example A and B is almost symmetry across the frequency range of 0.01 to 3 GHz. However, this symmetry performance cannot be observed in Example C, this is because the electrical lengths of additional interconnecting transmission lines are not zero and this phenomenon keeps identical with the results]. The simulated results in Fig. 6 show that the entirely ideal ports matching, output ports isolation, and unequal power dividing transmissionin different ways are obvious and accurate.VI. FOUR-WAY DUAL-BAND UNEQUALPLANAR POWER DIVIDERSIn this proposed four-way dual-band unequal power dividers shown in Fig. 7, the port impedance and the electrical lengthsθG=θH=θK=θP=π/(1+h) at f1are also used. In addition, all the unnecessary interconnecting transmission lines are neglected, namely, and equal to zero. All the design parameters in the power divider cells of Fig.7 can be obtained according to the generalized design function (10). The characteristic impedances of four output ports impedance-matching networks are calculated asTo verify this design method for four-way dual-band arbitrary power dividers, two examples at two different desired bands, namely, Examples D and E, are demonstrated. Their design parameters are listed in Table II while the ideal simulated results are shown in Fig. 8. Due to the flexibility of the proposed design theory, the simulated results of Examples D and E can effectively satisfy the unequal power division and arbitrary dual-band applications simultaneously, as shown in Fig. 8.Fig. 8. FABRICATION AND MEASUREMENTS In theory, the proposed design procedure can be used to design planar power dividers with arbitrary way, arbitrary dual band, and arbitrary power division. However, in practice, the construction of the power divider should be constrained by the range of realized characteristic impedances. Since there are too many kinds ofpower dividers can be designed by using this proposed design method, the common analysis of available ranges of characteristic impedances is not given. Fortunately, all the characteristic impedances in Examples A, B, C, D, and E in Sections V and VI could be easily implemented by using microstrip line. If the difference between power-dividing ratios is not very large, most of characteristic impedances can be adjusted into the practical range by modifying the independent internal terminal impedances such as R CP2for Example ABecause that the design parameters in this paper can be used to guide many transmission lines implementation, we choose the common microstrip technology to fabricate this experimental power divider for verification. The three-way dual-band unequal power divider Example C is considered as a random sample. In this power divider, the corresponding frequency ratio is h=4.0833 and only θCP and θDP are modified to zero.The applied substrate is the F4B material with a dielectric constant of 2.65 and a thickness of 0.8 mm. Photograph of this fabricated power divider is shown in Fig. 9. Note that the simulated results are obtained by using ideal transmission lines and lumped-elements models (not from full-wave simulation tools). The S-parameter measurements are performed using an Agilent N5230C network analyzer. The measured frequency range is from 0.01 GHz to 3 GHz.Fig. 10(a)–(d) plots the comparison of the simulated and measured S-parameters magnitudes while Fig. 10(e) gives the phase information of transmission parameters S21,S31,S41The measured transmission levels at the first frequency 0.6 GHzare ︱S21︱=-4.76dB,︱S31︱=-2.70dB,︱S41︱=-10.09 dB while thecorresponding values at the high frequency 2.45 GHz are︱S21︱=-5.72dB,︱S31︱=-3.33dB,︱S41︱=-8.48dB. These measured results agree with the ideal designgoals given by ︱S21︱=-4.7712dB, ︱S31︱=-2.5527dB,︱S41︱=-9.5424dB. All the matching and isolation values are below-21 dB at the low operating frequency 0.6 GHz and the matching and isolation performance is better than -9.8dB at the high frequency 2.45 GHz. The high level of the F4B’s loss tangent at high frequency maybe causes the extra insertion loss at 2.45 GHz. The in-phase characteristic can be observed in the measured results of Fig. 10(e). In addition, the measured group delaysof S21at both 0.6 and 2.45 GHz are about 1.51 and 1.57ns, respectively, as shown in Fig. 11.Some discrepancies between the measured and simulated results of output ports matching at 2.45 GHz may be attributed to the distorted performance of reactive components (inductors and capacitors) at high frequency. This problem may be solvedby using distributed-circuit equivalent inductors and capacitors. In addition, the unexpected tolerances in the fabrication process and junction discontinuities are other negative effects. In fact, due to its parameters’ sensibility, it is difficult to optimize the desired performance of this fabricated power divider by using electromagnetic optimizations without applying this proposed design methodology.VIII. CONCLUSIONThis paper has presented a generalized and analytical design method for multiway arbitrary dual-band planar power dividers with arbitrary power division. The main features of the proposed power dividers include: 1) arbitrary ways (two ways or multiple ways); 2) arbitrary power division (unequal power dividers or asymmetric structures); 3) arbitrary dual-band operations; 4) complete planar structure; 5) closed-form design method (parameters’ calculation is very simple and direct); and 6) easy implementation by using common practical transmission lines such as microstrip, double-sided parallel-strip line, and other strip-lines. It is expected that this proposed design theory for generalized power dividers can find many effective guilds or potential applications in practical circuit designs such as power amplifiers and antenna arrays, especially in dual-band systems.Fig. 9.
