Abstract
Objective T o explore the possible long-term health effects of the d e f o a m e r used in seawater
desalination by sub-chronic toxicity testing.

(P < 0.05). T h e direct bilirubin and indirect bilirubin w e r e decreased in the m e d i u m and high dose groups
(P < 0.05). All dose groups s h o w e d significant induction of alkaline phosphatase (P < 0.05). Pathological
examination revealed a case of liver mononuclear cell infiltration in the m e d i u m dose group and three cases of liver congestion, steatosis of hepatic cells around the central vein, a n d punctate necrosis with multiple focal mononuclear cell infiltration in male rats administered the high dose. T h e N o Observed Adverse Effect Level w a s 0.5 g/kg B W in rats, with albumin and total bilirubin as health effect indices.
Conclusion Long-term d e f o a m e r exposure m a y cause liver injury but has n o significant impact o n renal
function in rats. T h e effect o n blood cells in female rats w a s m o r e prominent than that in m a l e rats.
