那么，应该如何界定常用词呢？汉语中《常用字表》中的“一级字表”共收字3500个，基本涵盖了98%以上的汉语出版物，一个中国人认得三千多个汉字就能无障碍地阅读从娱乐八卦到严肃新闻，甚至到学术论文的所有内容；英语也是如此，从我国现行大学英语四级、六级词汇表看，六级的封顶词汇约为5500词，有了这五六千词汇的储备，就可以基本无障碍地阅读英文报刊及难度不大的文学作品了。
为什么说是“基本无障碍”呢？因为汉英两种语言的字词衍生、派生方式大相径庭。
有人说英语的词素（包括词缀词根）和汉语的偏旁部首相似，不知道《说文解字》的作者许慎是否同意这个观点，我们认为不妥，一是因为英语词素是字母的随意组合，无规律可循，而汉字的偏旁、部首基本符合《说文解字》提出的“六书”主张，或象形，或形声，或指事，或会意；二是汉字偏旁、部首的变化基本属于等比例放缩或简易变形（如“折”的几种形式“乛、乚、乙、乁”等），而英语词素经常出现字母转写或缺项（如sten-结合graphy时变为带中缀的steno，i结合legal要写作复写l的il-等）。
