The unique coloration (自然花纹) of the giant panda that is loved by many people has long been a mystery to scientists. But now a joint research team believes they have solved the mystery, once and for all.
The black and white patches on the giant panda mainly have two functions –camouflage (伪装) and communication, the joint research team from University of California, Davis, and California State University, Long Beach explains.
The giant panda’s white face, the back of ear, the back of tongue, belly, and rump (臀部) are adapted for crypsis (隐蔽) against a snowy background, whereas its black shoulders and legs are adapted for crypsis in shade, according to the study that the joint research team published in the journal of Behavioral Ecology on Feb. 28.
However, dark markings on the head are not used in crypsis, but in communication: dark ears may be involved with signaling intention about aggressive behavior while dark eye marks may serve in individual recognition, according to the study.
There is no strong evidence for their fur color being involved in temperature regulation, disrupting the ani mal’s outline or in reducing eye glare, the study explains.
“Understanding why the giant panda has such striking coloration has been a long-standing (存在已久的) problem in biology that has been difficult to tackle because actually no other mammal has this appearance, making analogies difficult,” said Dr. Tim Karo, a professor from the University of California and the lead researcher.

It was many years ago. I was a young dad sitting on the couch reading a fairy tale to my little girl. She sat next to me with her head on my arm as I told the tale. When it came to the end I finished with those famous words: "And they lived happily ever after." As I looked over to her with her wavy, brown hair and big, innocent eyes I could see the smile on her face and I never
wanted it to end. It dawned on me then that the ending of the book was what I wanted for her. I wanted her to "live happily ever after."
Still, deep in my heart I knew that this couldn't always be so. I knew that there would be times when her heart was broken. I knew there would be times when she cried in grief and I couldn't comfort her. I knew there would be times when all she felt was fear, sadness, sorrow, and despair. As I stroked her hair and smiled at her I hoped that those times would be brief and that she would have joy in her life more often than not. Living happily ever after, though, seemed out of the question.
It took me a lot of years to realize that it IS possible to live happily ever after. You just have to do it "one day at a time." Happiness you see isn't some reward that you get at the end of your journey. Happiness isn't something dependent on what life hands you. Happiness is something you create in your life choice by choice and day by day.
The truth is happiness comes when you love. Love is a gift from God. It is love that mends broken hearts. It is love that heals grief. It is love that gives us joy. Choose to "live happily ever after, one day at a time."
28. What can we know about from Paragraph 2?

A. Reward yourself once a day.

B. To describe a daughter’s growth.
C. To introduce the meaning of love.
D. To tell a young father’s experience.

When it comes to rainforests, it turns out, they are not created equal. Take the Amazon rainforest, an area that covers about 7 million square kilometers. But within that huge expanse are all kinds of ecological zones, and some of these zones, says a researcher, Greg Asner, are a lot more crowded than others.
“Some forests have many species of trees,” he said, “and others have few. Many forests are unique from others in terms of their overall species composition…” And all of these different small areas of fore st exist within the giant space that is the Amazon Rainforest.
So Asner, using the signature technique called airborne laser-guided imaging spectroscopy(光谱学), began to map these different zones from the
air. “By mapping the traits of tropical forests from above,” he explains, “we are, for the first time, able to understand how forest composition varies geographically.”
The results show up in multicolored maps, with each color representing different kinds of species, different kinds of trees, the different kinds of chemical they are producing and using, and even the amount of biodiversity, the animal and plant species that live within each zone.
Armed with this information, Asner says decision-makers now have “a first-time way to decide whether any given forest geography is protected well enough or not. If not, then new protections can be put in place to save a given forest from destruction.”
Asner says the information is a great way for decision-makers to develop a “cost-benefit ratio type analysis.” Conservation efforts can be expensive, so armed with this information, government leaders can ensure they are making the most of their conservation dollars by focusing on areas that are the most biologically diverse or unique.
The next step, Asner says, is to take his project global, and to put his eyes even higher in the sky, on orbital satellites. “The technique we developed and applied to map Peru is ready to g o global.” Asner said. “We want to put the required instrumentation on an Earth-orbiting satellite, to map the planet every month, which will give the best possible view of how the world’s biodiversity is changing, and where to put much needed protections.
32. What did Asner find by mapping the Amazon rainforests?
A. Unique species make up different areas of forests.
B. Species in forests grow similarly in different zones.
C. Different kinds of species live within the same area.
D. Geographical zones are home to species of a kind.
33. What benefit will the mapping bring?
A. Money can be saved to analyze forests.
B. Threatened forests can get better protection.
C. A given forest can be ensured biologically diverse.
D. More efforts will focus on conversation information.
34. What is Asner planning to do now?
A. To put an earth-orbiting satellite in space.
B. To change the world’s biodiversity.
C. To monitor the biodiversity of the world.
D. To map the rainforests every month.
35. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Mapping the species around the world.
B. Conserving the earth with exact maps
C. Tracing the changes of biodiversity.
D. Using eyes in the sky to map biodiversity.

Some people are successful while others are unsuccessful. The key difference between the two groups is not talent or luck. 36 Here are four of the key habits of ineffective people.
1. They drift.
Ineffective people drift though life with no clear goals. 37 They are busy all day without ever accomplishing the really significant things they should do. They find it hard to differentiate between jobs that are
urgent and jobs that are important. They do not measure progress against written objectives because they do not set themselves any objectives.
2. 38
Successful people are prepared to move out of their comfort zones and take some calculated risks. Ineffective people prefer to stay doing what they know they can do. They do not want to try new things at which they could fail or make a fool of themselves. They are reluctant to learn new skills; instead they are keen to keep treading the paths they know well.
3. They are indecisive.
Successful people make choices, they are decisive –and they get quite a few decisions wrong. But they move forward. When they see an opportunity, they seize it.
39 They defer decisions. They wait to see what will happen. They fear that if they make a decision it might turn out to be the wrong decision so they pause. They do not move forward. They miss opportunities.
4. They blame others.
Ineffective people have a long list of excuses. They are victims. Their parents, teachers, bosses and colleagues have all let them down from time to time. They have been unlucky. 40 They know that it is their actions and choices that determine their success or failure.
How can an ineffective person become effective and successful? First by acknowledging that they have some bad habits that are restricting them, and then by taking actions to break the habits. Ingrained habits are hard to break, but it can be done. That is what successful people do.
A. Unsuccessful people often avoid hard choices.
B. It is what they choose to do and choose not to do.
C. All people should try their best to realize their goals.
D. They do not have a to-do list, or if they have one they ignore it.
E. They avoid risks and discomfort.
F. They are easily distracted.
G. Successful people take charge of their lives and do not blame others.
