Jonathan Fairoaks lives in a tree house that he designed and built! In fact, as a tree house architect, Jonathan has built more than 380 tree houses across the United States.
Jo nathan’s love of tree house living began when he was a kid. He
started climbing trees when he was 10 years old, and he became an
arborist (a person who cares for trees) in high school. He built his first tree
house and lived in it while he was in college.
“It was delightful —like being on a ship because it moved with the wind” Jonathan says. “It was the most fun I’d ever had.”
Designing special tree houses may sound difficult, but Jonathan says it’s not true.“I let the trees decide the designs,” he says. “Hardwoods such as oak make the best trees for houses — but I did once build a wonderful tree house in an apple tree.”
As an arborist, Jonathan tries to never harm the trees. He attaches (连接) manmade limbs (树的主枝) to the tree to support the tree house.
“The tree grows over the man made limbs, and they become part of the tree” Jonathan says.
One feature of Jonathan’s tree houses is the swings (秋千). “Swings are a great way to enjoy the trees” he explains. For example, he puts up monkey swings (a rope with a round seat) for kids’ tree houses.
Jonathan also likes tree houses that have views of streams or rivers and include windows that are made of pieces of colored glass.
“Let your imagination run wild” he says“Walk in the woods and learn the different trees. Spend time climbing and learn how to do it safely.”
Jonathan also encourages his customers to give their tree houses names. One of his customers named his own tree house “Ups and Downs”.

Ernest Everett Just was born in South Carolina in 1883. Because high schools for African-American children in the South were poor, Just’s mother sent him north to finish his education. There was a school in New Hampshire that accepted African-American boys. Just studied there and did so well that he went on to Dartmouth College, where he studied biology and fell in love with the subject.
From Dartmouth, Just went to Howard University, a university for African Americans in Washington, D. C. , where he became a teacher. In the summers, he worked at the Marine (海洋的) Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts, probably the most famous marine lab in the world. It was there that Just began his lifelong exploration of how cells (细胞) work. He used the eggs of sea animals to study how cells reproduce and divide.
When Just was doing his research, most scientists gave all their attention to the central part of a cell because they thought it the only part of the cell that was important for development. As Just studied the eggs he collected, recording how they developed under different conditions, he saw something amazing. He discovered that cell activity depended not just on its central part but also on its outer part, which is most influenced by the environment outside the cell. Just realized that it helps decide whether or not the cell develops well and how an unusual cell will be different from other cells.
Just is research changed the way scientists think about cells. In 1915, Just became the first to receive the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal, given to an African American for outstanding achievement.
Just also worked hard to improve the quality of scientific education given to African Americans.
Ernest Just died of cancer in 1941, leaving behind a wife and three children. He also left behind a world which would finally recognize him as the excellent zoologist of his time.

D.there were no schools for blacks in the south

B.Its outside part plays a key role in cell activity.
C.Outside environment only affects its outside part.
D.Outside conditions have little effect on its development.
10.We can learn from the text that ________.
A.Just died in his sixties.

C.Spingarn Medal is a prize for great blacks.
D.Just began to study cells during his college years.

A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man — the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort.
As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen will have a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as
many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week.
Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble a large number of people around the world. They feel that the long-hours work culture to make more money to buy more things is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education.
12. From Paragraph 1,we can know that in America .
A. people tend to have a high opinion of the self-made man
B. people can always rise to the top through their own efforts
C .college professors win great respect from common workers
D. people feel painful to mention their fathers as laborers
13. According to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because .
A. servants in America are hard to get
B. she takes pride in what she can do herself
C. she can hardly afford servants
D. it is easy to prepare a meal with canned food
14. The expression “wait on table” in the third paragraph means .
A. work in a furniture shop
B. keep accounts for a bar
C. wait to lay the table
D. serve customers in a restaurant
15. Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?
A Respectable Self-made Family B. American Attitude toward Manual Labor
C. Characteristics of American Culture
D. The Development of Manual Labour

A .Change goals every so ofte n.
B .Make a visual goal reminder.
C .Don’t always tell him what you think.

Green Action in Our Class
April 12 is memorable because our class had a meaningful experience on that day. In the morning, we bicycled to the suburbs to plant trees, talking and laughing all the way. Upon arrival, we began to work immediately. Some were digging holes. Some were carrying and planting young trees. Others were watering them. After getting the work done, we put up a board reminding people to protect the trees. Before leaving we took some photos to record our green action. Seeing the lines of trees, we all had a sense of achievement. We feel it’s our duty to protect and beautify our environment.
