Apply direct pressure. Place a clean, folded cloth over the injured area and firmly apply pressure. If blood soaks through, do not remove it. Instead, cover that cloth with another one and continue to apply pressure to the wound for 7—10 minutes. If the bleeding is from the ear, place a clean bandage over the ear, lay the victim on his side, and allow the blood to drain out through the bandage.
Elevate the injury. Position the wounded part of the body above the level of the heart if possible while you apply direct pressure.
Know the pressure points. If direct pressure and elevation don’t sufficiently slow the blood flow, find a pressure point. Large arteries(动脉)found close to the skin’s surface supply blood to the head and to each arm and let. The most common pressure points used during the first aid are located in the upper arms and in the creases(皱纹) above the upper legs. Apply pressure to the closest pressure point to the wound so that the artery is pressed between your fingers and the bone directly behind the artery. If using the pressure point on a leg, you may need to use the heel of your hand instead of your finger.
Resort to tourniquet (止血带,压脉器). On very rare occasions everything listed above may fail. To prevent the victim from dying, you should apply a tourniquet. Once a tourniquet is applied, it should not be loosened or removed until the victim has reached medical help. Use a tourniquet ONLY if everything listed above has failed. If you use a tourniquet, write down somewhere on the victim the time when it was applied, so medical persons will know how long it has been in place.
56. According to the passage, if a person is wounded and bleeding, you should________________.

B. wash the wound at once
C. press the wound firmly with your hand
D. cover that one with another one and press it
58. In this passage ________ ways are mentioned to stop blood.
A. four
B. three
C. two
D. one
59. According to the passage, we know that ____________.
A. it is better to put the injured part above the head to stop bleeding
B. large arteries deep in the muscle supply blood to the head and to each arm and leg
C. we should use a tourniquet first to stop bleeding
D. the most common pressure points lie in the upper arms and in the crease above the upper legs

According to the latest research in the United States of America, men and women talk such different languages that it is like people from two different cultures trying to communicate. Professor Deborah Tannen of Georgetown University has noticed the difference in the style of boys’ and girls’ conversations from an early age. She says that little girls’ conversation is less definite than boys’ and expresses more doubts. Little boys use conversation to establish status with their listeners.
These differences continue into adult life, she says. In public conversations, men talk most and interrupt other speakers more. In private conversations, men and women speak in equal amounts—although they say things in a different style. Professor Tannen believes that, for women, private talking is a way to establish and test intimacy (亲密,接近). For men, private talking is a way to explore the power structure of a relationship.
Teaching is one job where the differences between men’s and women’s ways of talking show. When a man teaches a woman, says Professor Tannen, the wants to show that he has more knowledge, and hence (因此,所以) more power in conversation. When a woman teaches another woman, however, she is more likely to take a sharing approach and to encourage her student to join in.
But Professor Tannen does not believe that women are naturally more helpful. She says women feel they achieve power by being able to help others. Although the research suggests men talk and interrupt people more than women, Professor Tannen
says, women actually encourage this to happen because they believe it will lead to more intimacy and help to establish a relationship.
Some scientists who are studying speech think that the brain is pre-programmed for language. As we are usually taught to speak by women, it seems likely that the brain must have a sexual bias(倾向性) in its programming, otherwise male speech patterns would not arise at all.
60. In the opinion of the writer, women encourage men to talk more because_________.
A. it will lead to more intimacy and help to establish a relationship
B. it will help to establish status with their listeners
C. it will help to express more clearly
C. it will help to communicate better
61. There are _____ in little girls’ conversation than in boys’.

D. fewer uncertainties
62. Some scientists believe that brain is pre-programmed for language. The word “pre-programmed” means__________.
A. programmed already
B. programmed before one is born
C. programmed early
D. programmed by women
63. In private conversation, women speak __________.
A. the same things as men
B. less than men
C. more than men
D. as much as men
64. The theme of this article is ________.
A. women are naturally more helpful

I grew up in a small town. My father raised chickens and ran a construction company. I was barely 10 years old when my dad gave me the responsibility(责任) of feeding the chickens and leaning up the stable. He believed it was important for me to have those jobs to learn responsibility. Then, when I was 22, I found a job in Natchbill at a country music club called the Natchbill Palace, I washed dishes and cooked from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and then went on stage and sang until 2:00 in the morning. It wasn’t long before I became known as a singing cook. I had been rejected so many times by record companies that it was hard not to be discouraged. One night, a woman executive(董事) from a company named Warner Brothers Records came to hear me sing. When the show was over, we sat down and talked and after she left, I said to myself it was one more rejection. A few weeks later, my manager received a phone call---Warner Brothers wanted to sign me to a record deal. Soon after, I released my first record in June 1986. It sold over 2 million copies. My best efforts had gone into every job I’ve ever held. It was the sense of responsibility that made me feel like a man. Knowing that I had done my best filled me with pride. I still feel that way today, even though I have become a well-known singer.

There are thousands of products of all colors and shapes in a supermarket, making you believe that they are worth a try. How? Packaging (包装) is the silent but persuading salesman.
There on the shelves, each bottle, can, box and jar has been carefully designed and measured to speak to the inner self of the consumer (消费者), so that he is buying not only a product but also his belief in life. Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found that the look of the package has a great effect on the “quality”of the product and on how well it is sells, because “Consumers generally cannot tell between a product and a package. Many products are packages and many packages are products,”as Kouis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers’ feeling for packaging, noticed.
Colors are one of the best tools in packaging. Studies of eye movement have shown that colors draw human attention quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that it is very good for your body. And the word “green” today can keep food prices going up.
Shapes are another attraction. Circles often suggest happiness and peacefulness, because these shapes are pleasing to both the eye and the heart. That’s why the round yellow M signs of McDonald’s are inviting to both young and old.
This new consumer response (反应) to the colors and shapes of packages reminds producers and sellers that people buy to satisfy both body and soul.
72. According to the passage, _____ seems to be able to persuade a consumer to buy the product.
A. the pleasing color of the package
B. the special taste of the product
C. the strange shape of the package
D. the belief in the product
73. If a package of a product is round in shape, it can________.
A. bring excitement to the consumers
B. attract the consumers’ attention
C. catch the eye movement of the consumers
D. produce a happy and peaceful feeling
74. “And the word ‘green’today can keep food prices going up.”This sentence suggests that consumers today are_________.
A. starting to notice the importance of new food
B. enjoying the beauty of nature more than before
C. beginning to like green vegetables
D. paying more attention to their health
75. It can be inferred from the passage that V8 is a kind of ______.
A. vegetable dish
B. healthy juice
C. iced drink
D. red vegetable

On May 12th,2008, a strong earthquake rocked Wenchuan, Sichuan Province, causing more than 30 thousand deaths up till now. It’s estimated that another four thousand people will lose lives in the quake. Most of the houses were destroyed completely, leading to tens of thousands of people homeless. Therefore, our school put up a poster, describing the terrible losses and calling on us to aid the quake stricken-areas and the victims. Our classmates were eager to offer help. After a discussion, we decided to donate some books, clothes and money and so on, which were taken to the school office right afterwards. Several days later, a thank-you letter was sent to us, speaking highly of our behavior. We all felt proud and happy, for every one of us was able to do our bits to aid the people in need.。
