◆活学活用阅读下面短文,从所给的四个答案中选出最佳选项(2011年广州高三英语调研测试)School phobia is a type of illness which causes students to be afraid to go to school. This condition is most commonly seen in children, typically between the ages of 8-13,and it can be very upsetting, especially if it is allowed to progress.Symptoms include stomach aches, tiredness, shaking,a racing heart and frequent trips to the toilet. This common phobia is associated with a wide variety of causes. Most commonly it is the result of separation anxiety, but it can also be caused by different kinds of stress.A child who has recently moved, suffered a loss,or gone through a divorce may develop school phobia, and phobias can also develop in response to bullying (欺侮),an unrecognised learning disability, and poor self-image.Understanding the cause of a school phobia is an important step in providing treatment.A child with school phobia usually refuses to go to school,or protests violently. He or she may become physically ill when ordered to school,or pretend to be sick to avoid going. When the child arrives at school,he or she may run away,or develop behavioural problems in class and on the playground. When school is discussed, the child can become impatient, upset or angry. Many techniques can be used to manage school phobia, but research suggests that much more effective treatment is required for school phobia to prevent problems developing in later life.Children with this condition usually benefit from seeing a psychologist or doctor who can help the child and provide assistance to help parents and school officials support the child. As soon as a school phobia is identified, parentsshould take action too.Like other phobias, school phobia gets worse the longer it is left untreated, and it can interfere with a child's success in school.Adjustments can be made at home and in the classroom to help.If bullying is a cause, for example, the bullying situation should be solved.A teacher can meet the child at the door and take him or her to class, and provide support so that the child feels a friendly adult is always available.Changes at home can include supportive language from parents, along with support like assistance with homework. If a child lacks confidence, parents may encourage the child to take up new hobbies that will help them to feel good about themselves.Parents might also talk to their children about their own fears of school and how they got over them, and their own enjoyment of school and school-like activities.By following these methods we can help children to dispel their school phobia.Ⅰ.以约30词概括文章大意_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Ⅱ. 1.Which of the following topics is NOT discussed in the passage?A.The definition of school phobia.B.The history of school phobia.C.The causes of school phobia.D.The effects of school phobia.2.What is a useful treatment for school phobia according to the passage?A.Parents should allow their children occasional days off.B.Teachers should be stricter with students.C.Children should be helped to develop a sense of achievement.D.Children should be regularly sent to psychologist.3.The underlined word “dispel”(the last paragraph)probably means “________”.A.accept B.realizeC.forget D.overcome4.Which of the following statement might the author agree with?A.School phobia is most often suffered by middle school students.B.School phobia may have bad influence on children's future life if neglected.C.Children with school phobia should not be given medical treatment.D.Most children with school phobia are pretending to be ill.5.What are some of the reasons for school phobia mentioned in the passage?A.Bullying, recent devoice and moving to a new area.B.Learning disability, impatience and poor concentration.C.Stomachache,poor school performance and aggressive teachers.D.Shaking,lack of confidence and few friends.参考答案ⅠThe passage introduces the causes and bad influences of school phobia, which luckily can also be managed and treated by taking some technical measures with the help of parents.(29 words)Ⅱ1.

Europeans should try to stay indoors if ash from Iceland's volcano starts settling, the World Health Organization warned Friday as small amounts fell in Iceland, Scotland and Norway.WHO spokesman Daniel Epstein said the microscopic(微小的) ash is potentially dangerous for people when it starts to reach the Earth because inhaled(吸入) particles can enter the lungs and cause respiratory problems. And he also said Europeans who go outside might want to consider wearing a mask.Other experts, however, weren't convinced the volcanic ash would have a major effect on peoples' health and said WHO's warnings were "hysterical." They said volcanic ash was much less dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution. V olcanic ash is made of fine particles of fragmented volcanic rock. It is light gray to black and can be as fine as talcum powder. During a volcanic eruption, the ash can be breathed deep into the lungs and cause irritation even in healthy people. But once it falls from a greater distance — like from the cloud currently hovering above Europe — its health effects are often minimal, experts say."Not all partic les are created equal," said Ken Donaldson, a professor of respiratory toxicology at the University of Edinburgh, "In the great scheme of things, volcanic ash is not all that harmful." And he said most Europeans' exposure to volcanic ash would be negligible and that only those in the near districts of the Icelandic volcano would likely be at risk.Dr. Stephen Spiro, a professor of respiratory medicine and deputy chair of the British Lung Foundation, said the further the particles travel, the less dangerous they will be. "The cloud has already passed over northern Scotland and we haven't heard of any ill effects there," he said. Spiro said to wear masks or stay indoors to avoid volcanic ash was "over the top" and "a bit hysterical."1. The text is mainly about .A. the effect of volcanic ashB. the health risk of volcanic ashC. the disadvantages of volcanic ashD. the opinions on health risk of volcanic ash2. Which one is true according to Paragraph3?A. The volcanic ash’s effects on Europeans were little.B. The ash caused irritation even in healthy people.C. Other experts thought WTO’S warnings were useful.D. The volcanic ash was more dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution.3. The underlined word “hysterical” in Paragraph4 most probably means .A. amazingB. practicalC. valuableD. overstated4. What can we learn from the passage?A. The volcanic ash wouldn’t be harmful to people.B. All experts thought the volcanic ash did great harm to our health.C. People close to the volcano would likely be at risk according to some experts.D. Europeans should stay indoors because Iceland's volcano starts settling.

2013高考英语(浙江)阅读理解系列(3)(解析)(A)BEIJING—A chemical that ripens fruits and vegetables doesno harm to human health, experts said following recent reportsabout a ripener used in several provinces.“There is no problem with using ethephon to ripen fruits. Thisplant growth regulator is completely the same as hormones producedby plants themselves when they get ripe, ”Luo Yunbo, dean of the College of Food Science and Nutritional Engineering under China Agricultural University and an expert of plant physiology, told China Daily on Monday.“The chemical is safe enough that there is even no need for detection, for it has been used worldwide for decades. ” Luo said. The national standard for the amount of residue of the chemical is two milligrams in every kilogram of fruit, and experts said the actual dosage is far below that level, as overuse benefits neither farmers nor their fruit.“Overdose may make fruit ripen too rapidly and even rot, and will scorch the skin of fruit, which will harm sales for vendors, ”Luo said.China learned the use of the hormone from the United States and Japan, which is a pioneer in research and use of plant growth accelerators and regulators. Ethephon, an organic compound, is an agricultural plant growth stimulant that is sprayed on 70 or 80 percent ripe fruit after they have been picked. It gives off ethylene to facilitate ripening. Some fruit, such as bananas, will rot instead of ripen without such a ripener, according to experts.“The traditional way to ripen bananas is to put them together with mature apples, which can release ethephon to help bananas ripen, or ripen them by fuming with joss sticks. But these two ways may give bananas uneven color when they turn yellow, and the fruit will never have achieved mass production, ” Luo said.People interviewed by China Daily said it is easy to stir panic about additivesor growth accelerators, as food safety is a major concern.21. What does the passage mainly tell us?A. Experts said the fruit ripener causes no danger.B. How to use the fruit ripener.C. The harm of the fruit ripener.D. Customers are worried about the fruit ripener.22. The underlined word“dosage” in Paragraph 4 probably means _______.A. the way to use somethingB. the amount to use somethingC. the advantage of using somethingD. the disadvantage of using something23. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Ethephon is produced by plants themselves when they get ripe.B. Overdose will help plants ripen better.C. Ethephon is sprayed on 70 or 80 percent ripe fruit before they have been picked.D. China learned the use of the hormone from the United States and Japan.24. What is the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?A. To tell us the latest development in agriculture.B. To tell us the experts’ attitude to the use of the fruit ripener.C. To share his knowledge about how to use the fruit ripener.D. To warn us the harm of the fruit ripener.25. What will probably be discussed in the paragraph that follows?A. People’s panic about additives or growth accelerators.B. The future of the fruit ripener.C. The measures to be taken about the fruit ripener.D. The new standard about using the fruit ripener.(B)I had once helped a friend of mine run a watermelon stall. I noticed something interesting. Almost every buyer would lift the melon up to their ear, smartly tap it, apparently trying to listen to something. I wondered what they expected to hear. Finally I could no longer hold back my curiosity and made bold to ask a customer—an elderly gentleman—about this. Hearing my question,he roared with laughter. Then he replied in a self-mocking(自嘲)tone,“Young lady, I have been doing this for more than fifty years. All I know is that everybody would stare at you as if you were a fool if you just pick up the melon and leave! ”Not long after that,my watermelon stall friend unexpectedly sent me an invitation for her wedding, which really surprised me. I asked her, “How come you are seized by a sudden desire to get married? I don’t remember ever hearing you mention that you’ve got a boyfriend.”She answered while counting money, “Everyone has to get married anyway, so it is better to get married sooner than later. ”I could think of no word to refute(反驳)her. It seems that everybody is living for everybody else and has forgotten the need of their own heart. It may be safe and save a lot of worries by following others’ suit in doing things. The use of We or Us will give one a steady and sure sense of pride. But using the pronoun “I” would often give one a guilty conscience.I find all these things somewhat funny. We have got used to taking cue from(模仿)others and follow their suit. In turn,we also take it for granted that we should judge the right and wrong of others by our own standard. As a matter of fact, this massive practice is still wrong though we all follow others’ suit like this, but we feel at ease and, justified simply because this is the way of Us,and so we can have an easy conscience because this has been practiced by so many people.26. The writer probably feels that it is________ .A. necessary for the buyer to tap the watermelonB. foolish of the buyers to buy watermelon without tapping itC. funny that the buyers will tap the watermelons when buying themD. wise of the elderly gentleman to tap watermelons before buying them27. The writer uses the example of her friend’s decision of getting married to show that________ .A. her friend took no account of others’ feelingB. her friend decided to marry just to follow the crowdC. her friend was a person who has strong personalityD. everybody in the world should marry for others28. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?A. It may be safe to follow others’ suit in doing things.B. I was surprised to receive my friend’s invitation for her wedding.C. My experience of helping my friend run a watermelon stall was interesting.D. The use of We or I will give speakers themselves quite different senses.29. Which word can replace the underlined word “justified” in the last paragraph?A. Reasonable.B. Embarrassed.C. Ashamed.D. Nervous.30. In which section of a magazine can you read the passage?A. Art and LifeB. Sport and HealthC. Culture and SocietyD. Science and Technology答案解析21.【解析】选A。

Laws that would have ensured pupils from five to 16 received a full financial education got lost in the …wash up‟. An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.At school the children are taught to add up and subtract(减法) but, extraordinarily, are not routinely shown how to open a bank account — let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial education a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to 16 should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the Children, Schools and Families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called “wash-up” earlier this month — the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed. Consumer and parent groups believe financial education has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum. As the Personal Finance Education Group (Pfeg) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven- to 11-year-olds are savers but by the time they get to 17, over half of them are in debt to family and friends. By this age, 26% see a credit card or overdraft(透支) as a way of extending their spending power. Pfeg predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befall en many of their parents' generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school.”The UK has been in the worst financial recession(衰退)for generations. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.1. The passage is mainly about _____________.A. how to manage school lessonsB. how to deal with the financial crisisC. teaching young people about moneyD. teaching students how to study effectively2. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that __________.A. the author complains about the school educationB. pupils should not be taught to add up and subtractC. students have been taught to manage their financesD. laws on financial education have been effectively carried out3. The website and the consumer campaigner joined to _________.A. instruct the pupils to donate their pocket moneyB. promote the connection of schools and familiesC. ask the government to dismiss the parliamentD. appeal for the curriculum of financial education4. According to Pfeg, ___________.A. it is easy to keep good habits longB. teenagers spend their money as plannedC. parents are willing to pay the debt for their kidsD. it will be in trouble if the teenagers are left alone5. A poll is mentioned to ___________.A. stress the necessity of the curriculum reformB. show the seriousness of the financial recessionC. make the readers aware of burden of the parentsD. illustrate some people are strongly against the proposal答案:CADDA原文地址:/201208/120067.html。

Jimmy

〞Jimmy

Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you loveyourself.Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself.Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be trick y.Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics.but sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge.it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think.Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about US.Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be.Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world. The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day.Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself.Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task.If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true. The best way to get rid of a negative serf-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities.Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positiveself-image.When you can pat(拍) yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way.Good luck!1.Y ou need to build a positive self-image when you _________.A.dare to challenge yourselfB.feel it hard to change yourselfC.are unconfident about yourselfD.have a high opinion of yourself2.According to the passage, our serf-images _________.A.have positive effectsB.are probably untrueC.are often changeableD.have different functions3.How should you change your serf-image according to the passage?A.To keep a different image of others.B.To make your life successful.C.To understand your own world.D.To change the way you think.4.What is the passage mainly about?A.How to prepare for your success.B.How to face challenges in your life.C.How to build a positive self-image.D.How to develop your good qualities.5.Who are the intended readers of the passage?A.Parents.B.Adolescents.cators.D.People in general.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity, others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.I have taught many children who held the belief that their self – worth relied (依赖) on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life – and – death affairs. In their single – minded pursuit (追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to se ek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if th ey had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that man and animals possess if they are used. If fire didn’t hurt when it burned, children would play with it until their hands were burned away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn’t, a child could burn itself again and again because fear would not warn it to keep away from the fire that had burnt it before. A really fearless soldier—and some do exist—is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which man and animals might soon die out.
In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead, to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.
In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.
In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent an airplane crashing into your house, and you may not want to go and live in a desert where there are no airplanes. In this case, fear has given you its warning, you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of the particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.
