One day, the king summoned him to court and asked, “Now that the magistrate position of Nanyang county is vacant, who do yo u think is suitable for the post?” “Xie Hu is the right man for the job,” Qi replied without hesitation. Surprised, the king asked, “Did you say Xie Hu? I thought he’s your enemy. Why did you recommend him to take such an important position?”Smiling, Qi H uangyang said, “Your Majesty didn’t ask me my personal opinions on Xie Hu. You simply asked me who I thought would be competent for the position. Therefore I recommended Xie Hu.” The king followed Qi’s advice and made Xie Hu magistrate of Nanyang county. And sure enough, Xie Hu administered the county very well and won respect from local people and his colleagues. Some days later, the king again asked Qi Huangyang for his opinions. This time, the king was trying to find a suitable candidate for a court judge position. Qi Huangyang recommended Qi Wu for the job. Once again, the king was surprised again by the recommendation because Qi Wu was the son of Qi Huangyang. The king asked: “Wh y do you recommend your son? Aren’t you afraid people will gossip?” Qi Huan gyang replied, “Your Majesty, you asked me who was the most capable person for the position of a judge, and I think Qi Wu is.”Although the king was a bit hesitant about making Qi Wu the judge, he nevertheless gave him the position. As it turned out, Qi Wu was an upright and talented judge, whom people greatly respected. Qi Huangyang’s actions were praised by Confucius who said, “Qi Huangyang was right. He recommended people according to their abilities and talents, not because of personal sentiments, not b ecause of fearing others’ gossip. Therefore, people like Qi Huangyang are referred to as people ‘without selfish motives’”.Task TwoTranslate the following passage into Chinese.逾越节逾越节的第一天,耶稣派了他的两位学生去准备逾越节晚餐,在他们出发之前,耶稣告诉了他们具体去哪儿准备。
Unit 3 Your Key to a Better Life课文翻译大学英语五
Unit 3Your Key to a Better LifeThe most important psychological of this century is the discovery of the "self-image." Whether we realize it or not, each of us carries about with us a mental blueprint or picture of ourselves. It may be vague and ill-defined to our conscious gaze. In fact, it may not be consciously recognizable at all. But it is there, complete down to the last detail. This self-image is our own conception of the "sort of person I am." It has been built up from our own beliefs about ourselves. But most of these beliefs about ourselves have unconsciously been formed our past experiences, our successes and failures, our humiliations, our triumphs, and the way other people have reacted to us, especially in early childhood. From all these we mentally construct a "self," (or a picture of a self). Once an idea or a belief about ourselves goes into this picture it becomes "true", as far as we personally are concerned. We do not question its validity, but proceed to act upon it just as if it were true. This self-image becomes a golden key to living a better life because of two important discoveries:1. All your actions, feelings, behavior -- even your abilities -- are always consistent with this self-image.In short, you will "act like" the sort of person you conceive yourself to be. Not only this, but you literally cannot act otherwise, in spite of all your conscious efforts or will power. The man who conceives himself to be a "failure type person" will find some way to fail, in spite of all his good intentions, or his will power, even if opportunity is literally dumped in his lap. The person who conceives himself to be a victim of injustice, one "who was meant to suffer" will invariably find circumstances to verify his opinions. The self-image is a "premise," a base, or a foundation upon which your entire personality, your behavior, and even your circumstances are built. Because of this our experiences seem to verify, and thereby strengthen our self-images, and a vicious or a beneficent cycle, as the case may be, is set up.For example, a schoolboy who sees himself as an "F" type student, or one who is "dumb in mathematics," will invariably find that his report card bears him out. He then has "proof". A young girl who has an image of herself as the sort of person nobody likes, will find indeed that she is avoided at the school dance. She literally invites rejection. Her woebegone expression, her hang-dog manner, her over-anxiousness to please, or perhaps her unconscious hostility towards those she anticipates will affront her - all act to driveaway those whom she would attract. In the same manner, a salesman or a businessman will also find that his actual experiences tend to "prove" his self-image is correct.Because of this objective "proof" it very seldom occurs to a person that his trouble lies in his self-image or his own evaluation of himself. Tell the schoolboy that he only "thinks" he cannot master algebra, and he will doubt your sanity. He has tried and tried, and still his report card tells the story. Tell the salesman that it is only an idea that he cannot earn more than a certain figure, and he can prove you wrong by his order book. He knows only too well how hard he has tried and failed. Yet, as we shall see later, almost miraculous changes have occurred both in grades of students, and in the earning capacity of salesmen - when they were prevailed upon to change their self-images.2. The self-image can be changed. Numerous case histories have shown that one is never too young nor too old to change his self-image and thereby start to live a new life. One of the reasons it has seemed so difficult for a person to change his habits, his personality, or his way of life, has been that heretofore nearly all efforts at change have been directed to the circumference of the self, so to speak, rather than to the center. Numerous patients have said to me something like the following: "If you are talking about 'positive thinking', I've tried that before, and it just doesn't work for me." However, a little questioning invariably brings out that these individuals have employed "positive thinking," or attempted to employ it, either upon particular external circumstances, or upon some particular habit or character defect ("I will get that job." " I will be more calm and relaxed in the future." "This business venture will turn out right for me," etc.) But they had never thought to change their thinking of the "self" which was to accomplish these things.Jesus warned us about the folly of putting a patch of new material upon an old garment, or of putting new wine into old bottles. "Positive thinking" cannot be used effectively as a patch or a crutch to the same old self-image. In fact, it is literally impossible to really think positively about a particular situation, as long as you hold a negative concept of self. And, numerous experiments have shown that once the concept of self is changed, other things consistent with the new concept of self, are accomplished easily and without strain. One of the earliest and most convincing experiments along this line was conducted by the late Prescott Lecky, one of the pioneers in self-image psychology. Lecky conceived of the personality as a "system of ideas", all of which must seem to be consistent with each other. Ideas which are inconsistent with the system are rejected, "not believed," and not acted upon. Ideas which seem to be consistent with the system are accepted. At thevery center of this system of ideas -- the keystone -- the base upon which all else is built, is the individual's "ego ideal," his "self-image," or his conception of himself. Lecky was a school teacher and had an opportunity to test his theory upon thousands of students.Lecky theorized that if a student had trouble learning a certain subject, it could be because (from the student's point of view) it would be inconsistent for him to learn it. Lecky believed, however, that if you could change the student's self-conception, which underlies this viewpoint, his attitude toward the subject would change accordingly. If the student could be induced to change his selfdefinition, his learning ability should also change. This proved to be the case. One student who misspelled 55 words out of a hundred and flunked so many subjects that he lost credit for a year, made a general average of 91 the next year and became one of the best spellers in school. A boy who was dropped from one college because of poor grades, entered Columbia and became a straight "A" student. A girl who had flunked Latin four times, after three talks with the school counselor, finished with a grade of 84. A boy who was told by a testing bureau that he had no aptitude for English, won honorable mention the next year for a literary prize. The trouble with these students was not that they were dumb, or lacking in basic aptitudes. The trouble was an inadequate self-image ("I don't have a mathematical mind"; "I'm just naturally a poor speller"). They "identified" with their mistakes and failures. Instead of saying "I failed that test" (factual and descriptive) they concluded "I am a failure." Instead of saying "I flunked that subject" they said "I am a failure." Instead of saying "I flunked that subject" they said "I am a flunk-out." For those who are interested in leaning more of Lecky's work, I recommend securing a copy of his book: self consistency, a Theory of Personality. The Island Press, Now York, N.Y.美好生活的秘决这个世纪心理学领域里最重要的发现就是“自我行象”。

Unit 3Keys for 1.3.12.1.1 Check the reviewing section of sample Introduction and complete the following table.2.2.2 Read three extracts on the issue of poverty and crime. Use the verbs above to cite opinions on poverty and crime.A study by Williams (2011) reports that percentage of poor Americans who are living in extreme poverty has reached a 32-year high, resulting in severe social problems. The findings are supported by Holmes (2011) who further states that there are more and more at the link between unemployment, poverty and crime. And the unmistakable charac teristic of poverty and crime is that they’re both geographically concentrated in the same areas. This opinion is theoretically explained from an economic perspective of crime that people weigh the consequences of committing crime. They resort to crime only if the cost or consequences are outweighed by the potential benefits to be gained (Garland, 2012).Although both these studies focus on the close relation between poverty and crime, they have ignored … according to Leach and Mearns (2012).3.1 Using referencesInformation prominent citationAmong the six areas regarding the poverty headcount ratio at $1.25 a day,Author prominent citationThe World Bank (2012) stated that South Asia ranked the second in the chart regarding poverty ratio at $1.25 a day among six areas in the world.Weak author prominent citationAs a report from the World Bank (2012) indicated, the top two areas of poverty headcount ratio at $1.25 a day were sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, with a population of almost 50 percent and 37 percent respectively.3.2 Relating literature to your researchWhat questions does this literature review answer?(Key: This literature offers a summary of previous research, so it simply tells the reader what was discovered in previous research.)What questions doesn't it answer?(Key: It doesn't evaluate the research it summarizes, nor does it show the relationships between the different theories, views and approaches it describes.)Which method has the writer used to organize the literature review?(Key: The writer has organized this literature review around the researchers, and has presented it chronologically (arranging the work by when it was published). Notice that by organizing it around the researchers (the summaries are listed after the names of the people who did the research) and not around the research (e.g. around key concepts) the writer emphasizes the people and not their work.)Is it a good literature review? Why?(Key: We don't believe that it is a good literature review. It only gives a summary of previous research but it does not use the literature to explain more about the writer's own research problem. Also, it is not critical: after we read it we still do not know which theories or findings are important, which are inconclusive, what the shortcomings are, etc.The main problem with this literature review is that it does not show how previous research relates to the writer's own research problem, or the relationship between different researches already carried out. Given the organization the writer has used, this literature review could not be effective literature review because there is little scope for showing relationships, drawing comparisons, or making evaluations.)3.3 Avoiding plagiarismThe last sentence in Version 2 sounds like the idea of the writer of the paragraph, butwe know from Version 1 that it was originally the idea of Russell and Fillery (1996). Because there is no grammatical link between the two sentences, the reference in the first sentence does not apply to the second sentence. Note in Version 1 that the authors used both a grammatical link (they) and a tense marker (the past tense was not adaptable) to indicate that the idea came from the cited work.。

For the Olympic movement, it is a historic occasion. 52 years earlier in the same stadium, China sent a single athlete, Liu Changchun. Here in Los Angeles, China has let it be known their desire to become a member of the Olympic family of nations, bringing to the Games the combination of historic sports-loving traditions, the vibrant presence and thehopes for greater understanding amongst all nations, regardless of race, religion or political ideology. The next day, another historic moment, IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch presents the first gold medal of the Los Angeles Games. Xu haifeng, the pre-pistol champion wins the first gold medal for China. When the 2 weeks of competition are over, Chinese Olympians would amaze the world by winning 15 gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze medals. The predictions of Chinese athletes were world-class proved true. In the following 8 Olympic Games since their return, the athletes have performed with much honor and glow. Now a new horizon for China to host the athletes of the world in Beijing in 2008 for the 29th revival of the modern Olympic Games. Beijing is the capital city of China, a thriving metropolis of more than 12 million people. Beijing, a city of dramatic contrast, a skyline of modern structures, and new freeways combined with a mixture of glories that joined the past and the present, mystical places that have been passed down through the centuries in story and song. The Forbidden City, holding centuries of history; the Great Wall, the only earthly structure built by man that can be seen from outer space, a monument to the survival of a vibrant culture that has been able to combine the greatness of the past with ever-changing economic, social, and technological advances of the present. It has been written, some men see things as they are and ask why. Others dream things that never were and ask why not. So it was on September 6, 1999 that the Chinese Olympic Committee formerly nominated Beijing to host the athletes of the world in the year 2008. For centuries the people of China have had much in common with a philosophy of founder Baron De Coubertin: balance of mind and body, harmony with the law of nature. And it is only right and proper for the country with almost 1/5 of the world’s population, 56 ethnic nationalities, a 5000-year of history be given the honor to host the Olympic Games. And yet with this diversity, almost 96 percent of the country wholeheartedly endorses the bid of its capital in the hopes of 7 words that will ring throughout the land, the words “the world will be coming to Beijing.”So what is it this Beijing that separates it from all those aspire to hold the games? We are sure all the other cities seeking this nomination would do honor to the celebration with stadiums, arenas, housing and cultural centers. But it is more than these. Perhaps the feelings can best be described in the words of a poet: Do you love this land for what it is? Its natural treasures, its vibrant energy, its endless romances, its historic past. Or do you love this land above all else? For its people. There will be 37 competition venues for the 2008 Olympic Games. 40% of the venues already exist, the rest are in the planning stages. 14 venues are within walking distance from the Olympic village. The Olympic village, accommodating 17000 athletes and team officials will offer the finest comfort, convenience and relaxation. An 1800-acre park will border the village. After the Games, the village will be converted into residential housing. The main press center will be near the media village, home to 12000 journalist s and members of the media. The International Broadcasting Center will also be close by. Beijing’s new international airport willprovide easy access to all parts of China and the world. The ringroads, expressways and subways will ensure fast and convenient transportation for athletes as well as the public. A new fourth ringroad, the main route to the Olympic venues has been named the Olympic Expressway. While Beijing today is a modern green city, it has carefully protected its cultural heritage and environment. Since 1998, the city has committed every year 1.2billion $US for its environmental projects. China has the world second largest fixed and mobile phone systems. Over the past decade, the country’s telecommunication sector has grown at an average of 43% annually.Beijing is also a shopping heaven for silk, antiques and Chinese handicrafts. Not only Chinese but the finest international cuisine can be found throughout the city. While today there are already a sufficient number of hotel rooms, by 2008, there will be 130000 available for Olympic visitors. We are looking forward to greeting the youth of the world. We are building an Olympic city.Welcome to Beijing.(from: /v_show/id_XNTUxNDUwNjQ=.html)Key for ReferenceVocabulary LinkMatch the terms on the left with their definitions on the right.1—D 2—A 3—F 4—C 5—B 6—E1. revival a process of something becoming active or strong 复兴,复活2. ideology a set of ideas on which a political or economic system is based (政治或经济的)思想体系3. skyline the shape made by hills or buildings against the sky (山或建筑物在天空映衬下的)轮廓4. nominate to officially suggest someone for an important position, duty, or prize提名,推荐5. accommodate to have or provide enough space for a particular number of peopleor things 容纳6. cuisine a particular style of cooking (法语)烹饪Exercises 1 Listen to the news report and fill in the blanks with different figures you hear from the news.1. 1) July 28, 1984, 2) 218 men and women athletes and 3) 50 coaches from thePeople’s Republic of China march into the Los Angeles Coliseum for the opening-day ceremonies of the 4) 23rd revival of the modern Olympic games.2. Thank you, Yangling.)Mr. President, Ladies and gentlemen,Good afternoon! Before I introduce our cultural programs, let me tell you one thing first about 2008. You’re going to have a great time in Beijing. Many people are fascinated by China’s sport legends in history. For example, back to Song Dynasty, which was the 11th century, people in our country started to play a game called Cuju, which is regarded as the origin of ancient football. The game was so popular that women were also participating. So now, you would probably understand why our women football team does so well today. There are a lot more wonderful and exciting events waiting for you in the New Beijing, a modern metropolis with 3,000 years of cultural treasures woven into the urban tapestry. Along with the iconic imagery of the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall, the city also offers an endless mixture of theatres, museums, discos, all kinds of restaurants and shopping malls which will amaze you and delight you.But beyond all that, this is a city of millions of friendly people who love to meet people from around the world. They believe if the 2008 Olympics is held in Beijing, it will help to enhance the harmony between our culture and diverse cultures of the world and guarantee their gratitude will pour out in open expressions of affection for you and the great movement that you guide.Within our cultural programs, education and communication will receive the highest priority. We seek to create an intellectual and sporting legacy by broadening the understanding of the Olympic ideals throughout the country.Cultural events will unfold each year, from 2005 to 2008. We will stage multi-disciplined cultural programs, including concerts, exhibitions, art competitions and camps which will involve young people from around the world. During the Olympics, these activities will also be held in the Olympic Village and in the city for the benefit of the athletes. Our Ceremonies will give China’s greatest, and the world’s greatest artists a chance to celebrate the common aspirations of humanity and the unique heritage of Chinese culture and that of the Olympic Movement. With a concept inspired by the famed Silk Road, our Torch Relay will break new ground, traveling from Olympia through some of the oldest civilizations known to man - Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Byzantine, Mesopotamian, Persian, Arabian, Indian and Chinese. Carrying the message “Share the Peace, Share the Olympics,”the eternal flame will reach new heights as it crosses the Himalayas over the world’s highest summit - Mount Qomolangma, which is known to many of you as Mt. Everest. In China, the torch will pass through Tibet, cross the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, travel the Great Wall and visit Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and the 56 ethnic communities who make up our society. On its journey, the flame will be seen by and inspire more human beings than any previous relay.I am afraid I can not give you the full picture of our cultural programs within such a short period of time. Before I end, let me share with you one story. Seven hundred years ago, amazed by his incredible descriptions of a far away land of great beauty, people asked Marco Polo whether his stories about China were true. And Marco answered: What I have told you was not even half of what I saw. Actually, what we have shown you here today is only a fraction of the Beijing that awaits you.Ladies and gentlemen, I believe Beijing will prove to be a land of wonders to all of you, to athletes, spectators and world-wide television audience alike. Come and join us. Thank you, Mr. President. Thank you all. One day, the king summoned him to court and asked, “Now that the magistrate position of Nanyang county is vacant, who do you think is suitable for the post?” “Xie Hu is the right man for the job,” Qi replied without hesitation. Surprised, the king asked, “Did you say Xie Hu? I thought he’s your enemy. Why did you recommend him to take such an important position?”Smiling, Qi Huangyang said, “Your Majesty didn’t ask me my personal opinions on Xie Hu.
