disinhibition
Text A Terms and Notes
( 心 理 学 ) 抑 制 解 除 Disinhibition is used in psychology to describe a lack of restraint manifested in several ways, including disregard for social conventions, impulsivity, and poor risk assessment. Disinhibition affects motor, instinctual, emotional, cognitive and perceptual aspects with signs and symptoms similar to the diagnostic criteria for mania(躁狂). Individuals who show disinhibited behaviour tend to have challenging behaviours including verbal aggression, physical aggression, socially inappropriate behaviour, sexual disinhibition, wandering, and repetitive behaviour.

• Statements that may seem benign on the surface can be thinly veiled attempts to humiliate; falsely accuse; or manipulate others to submit to undesirable behavior, make others feel unwanted and unloved, threaten others economically, or isolate victims from support systems. While oral communication is the most common form of verbal abuse, it includes abusive communication in written form.

• The U.S. Department of Justice defines emotionally abusive traits as including causing fear by intimidation, threatening physical harm to self, partner, children, or partner’s family or friends, destruction of pets and property, forcing isolation from family, friends, or school or work. Studies have argued that an isolated incident does not constitute emotional abuse: it is characterised by a climate or pattern of behaviour(s) occurring over time.

Listen to the Talk
Tony Porter is the visionary and co-founder behind the nonprofit A Call to Men: The National Association of Men and Women Committed to Ending Violence Against Women. Porter’s message of engagement and self-examination has connected powerfully with numerous domestic and sexual violence programs for such highprofile groups as the National Football League and the National Basketball Association, and colleges and universities around the country. He is a faculty member of the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services Academy of Addiction Studies, where he co-authored their curriculum for clinicians who work with chemically dependent African-Americans. He also specializes in developing social justice models for human service organizations. In this talk, Porter challenges the traditional idea of manhood and appeals for parents to educate the boys to become men who are not domineering and who could have emotions, as he believes that traditional idea of male dominance is the social foundation of domestic violence against women.
1. Watch the first part of the talk and answer the following questions.
1. Traditional ideology which asserts men’s power and control over women is said to be a major cause of domestic violence against women. According to Mr. Porter, as a boy, what qualities he was taught that men had to have?

2. What are the traditional ideas of men and women concerning power and control?
Men are in charge, and women are not; men lead, and women should just follow and do what men say; men are superior, and women are inferior; men are strong, and women are weak; women are of less value, property and objects, particularly sexual objects of men.
Men are taught to be tough, strong, courageous and dominating. Men should have no pains, no emotions with the exception of anger and definitely they should have no fear.
