I grabbed my camera and carefully positioned myself to take this wildlife encounter. The second time: same thing. The third time: I picked up my phone and took a snapshot. By the fourth or fifth time, I didn't even look when I felt something bump into me. I knew what it was.I was there to shoot a story about island restoration(修复) in the Seychelles, far off the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Until roughly the middle of the past century, the small island nation showed signs of real environmental killing- local vegetation(植被)-cleared to make way for coconut plantations, foreign rats and mice running uncontrolled, native sea turtles and giant tortoises being exploited. Biodiversity seemed destroyed. But then the country experienced a shift in conservation awareness—and the giant Aldabra tortoises are among its most visible signs.Every morning when I woke up and walked outside the hut, I had to remind myself that I hadn't traveled back in time. I could see flightless Aldabra rails, coconut crabs the size of dinner plates, and giant tortoises—roughly four feet long and weighing up to 550 pounds- just wandering around. The number of sharks in the bay was crazy. Frigatebirds and boobies(鲣鸟) nested in the mangroves (a kind of tree). When we left our hut doors open, which we often did to let in air, the tortoises would walk right through. In the late afternoon or early evening, whenever they'd finished eating, the tortoises would drop themselves down and fall asleep with their heads outstretched. That made nighttime trips to the outhouse perilous(险恶的). To get there, we'd have to go 200 feet into the mangroves, negotiating what I called the tortoise slalom(之形障碍) trail. It was a track without a pattern, because of course they picked different places to sleep every night. Avoiding them was important: Falling headfirst over a tortoise onto the sharp coral rock could lead to serious injury on an island far from medical facilities.Nothing was easy on Aldabra, and much of it was insanely difficult. Yet living among the tortoises in this primordial place, in one of the last spots where reptiles still rule, was one of the happiest times of my life.4. How did the author feel about his final meeting with the tortoise in his room?A. CalmB. ExcitedC. ConcernedD. Disturbed5. What made the wildlife on the island suffer during the last century?A. Introducing foreign species.B. Killing too many rats and mice.C. Planting lots of coconut trees.D. Repairing the building on the island.6. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?A. To stress the importance of their work.B. To introduce how large the tortoises are.C. To present his daily routine on the island.D. To show how the wildlife is diverse on the island.7. What might be the suitable title for this passage?A. Island fills with curious tourists.B. Aldabra calls for wildlife protection.C. Tortoises rule on this isolated island again.D. Efforts are made to protect the environment.CA child's early years of language development are important for the basics of school readiness, such as literacy(读写) skills and social and emotional growth. In a recent study, University of Miami Assistant Professor of Psychology Lynn Perry and a team of fellow researchers who examined child speech communications over the course of a year found that children benefit from conversations with their peers(同龄人) and their teachers. The study examined how language use and development in 2-and 3-year-old children was influenced by what they heard from their teachers and their peers.“Previous research on language development looked mostly at the role of parent-child communication within a home setting or a lab environment, which means we're missing a big part of a child's everyday life—the classroom,” said Perry. “We know that parent language is important for children's development and their academic achievement, but we don't have much research on what happens in the kindergarten or preschool setting.”Using a device (设备) called a Language Environment Analysis (LENA) recorder, Perry collected hundreds of hours of audio recordings. Children wore the LENA recorder once a week. LENA software then assessed whether the recorded audio was speech or not, and whether the speech came from the child wearing the recorder or from an adult or another child talking to them. After studying the audio data, Perry found that the speech children heard from other children was positively related to their own language use, meaning children who heard the most from their peers learn more new words and vocalize more during the course of the year. Additionally, there was a positive association between a teacher talking and children's language use and development—but only when that teacher talked to the child in a back -and-forth conversation, rather than just talking to the child with no opportunity for the child to respond.“One important aspect of the study that stands out to me is how important it was to see those conversational turns with teachers, and that back-and-forth conversation with the child is very beneficial. We talked to the teachers about the results, and they are very excited about this finding and currently brainstorming additional opportunities to have conversations with children,” adds Perry.8. What does the new study focus on?A. The basics of school readiness for preschool children.B. The parent-child communication at home or in the lab.C. The influence of conversations in the kindergarten on children.D. The ways to improve preschool children's healthy growth.9. How did the researchers perform their new study?A. By observing the children in class.B. By conducting a survey of teachers.C. By communicating with the children.D. By recording the children's speech in class.10. What does the underlined word “vocalize” in paragraph 4mean?A. Listen.B. Speak.C. Read.D. Write.11. What do teachers plan to do to develop children's speech ability according to the text?A. Have more back -and- forth conversations with children.B. Encourage children to listen more to their own speech.C. Inform parents of the importance of conversational turns.D. Add more brainstorming activities to their daily teaching.DDo you crave chips, pizza, donuts, or cake? These kinds of foods are high in sugar and fats, which make them delicious but not nutritious. A recent analysis suggests that certain ingredients in these types of processed foods can be addictive.According to the research published in the journal Addiction, certain foods can trigger the same feelings as drugs. It all comes down to what's happening in the brain. When we feel happy, it's due to a flood of the feel-good chemical dopamine(多巴胺) in the striatum. This region is part of the brain's reward circuit. The striatum gets a dopamine rush when something good happens. Drugs and alcohol can... cause a similar high. So, it turns out, can some popular snack foods.“We're designed to find carbohydrates(碳水化合物) and fats,” says Ashley Gearhardt, a psychologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Evolving such tastes helped our ancestors “overcome famine and make sure we survive,” she explains. That critical role shaped the brain's reward system, making us hard-wired to enjoy carbohydrates and fatty foods. The problem isn't with all foods containing carbohydrates and fats. Fruit is full of sugar. Oats and other whole grains have lots of carbohydrates. Nuts and meat have fat. But such unprocessed foods—eaten in a form that's similar to how they grew—also contain other nutrients, such as fiber, that slow digestion. That limits how quickly our bodies can absorb the nutrients.Cookies, candy, soda, fries and other highly processed foods lack those additional nutrients. Such foods contain ingredients that have been highly changed from their natural state. They're chock full of easy-to-absorb carbohydrates and added fats. What's more, they often contain ingredients that don't naturally occur together. When we eat these foods, we get a quick “hit” of carbs and fats that give the brain a boost. That makes us want to eat them again and again.12. According to the article, which types of food can be addictive?A. Fruits and grains.B. Cookies and cake.C. Nuts and meat.D. Oats and fiber.13. Why are humans hard-wired to enjoy carbs and fatty foods, according to the article?A. They provide quick energy.B. They helped our ancestors survive.C. They are full of fiber.D. They contain natural sugars.14. How does the brain react when we eat certain highly processed foods?A. It gets a boost of carbs and fats that make us feel full.B. It slows down the digestion process.C. It triggers the same feelings as drugs.D. It releases feel-good chemicals that prevent addiction.15. What is the main idea of the article?A. Certain processed foods can create addictive responses.B. Unprocessed foods are better for you than processed foods.C. Our brains are born to enjoy carbohydrates and fats.D. The lack of additional nutrients in processed foods makes them unhealthy.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

2023届浙江省91高中联盟年高三5月高考考前模拟英语试卷

2023届浙江省9 1高中联盟年高三5月高考考前模拟英语试卷学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________一、阅读理解Paris, best-known as the city of love, is also the city of book lovers! Here are four literary landmarks you should not miss.Brasserie Lipp151 Boulevard Saint-GermainThis brasserie has long been a popular bar for creatives. In its early days it was popular among actors from a nearby theatre group called Vieux-Colombier. Later, writers came in droves. Marcellin Cazes, who took over ownership in 1918, created the literary prize Prix Cazes to reward authors not successful in literary competitions before. It has been staged annually since it began in 1935.BoquinistesRight Bank and Left Bank of the River SeineThe boquinistes are riverside booksellers who have been around since the 16th century. These booksellers began as somewhat lawless figures, disliked by the authorities as they were able to get around the censorship (审查) rules. In the mid-19th century they were granted licenses to sell books, and now they are a major sight along the Seine. They feature on France’s list of intangible (非物质的) cultural heritage.Père Lachaise8 Boulevard de MenilmontantWhen it first opened, this cemetery was not a popular burial spot. It was some way away from the city centre and it had not been blessed by the church. In a marketing ploy, the cemetery acquired the remains of some notable literary figures. In decades, the cemetery had become the final resting place of many writers, including Balzac and Gertrude Stein.Le Procope13 Rue de l’Ancienne ComédieLe Procope was opened in 1686 by Sicilian chef Francesco and is still on business. Located across the road from a theatre, it became a hotspot for actors, playwrights and poets. Voltaire was said to drink 40 cups of coffee a day while he worked at a table at the cafe.1.Who was the prize Prix Cazes intended for?A.Notable literary figures.B.Actors from Vieux-Colombier. C.Booksellers on the Seine.D.Losers in literary competition. 2.What makes Boquinistes distinctive?A.Their popularity among creatives.B.A perfect option for book shoppers. C.Being intangible cultural heritage.D.Playwrights and poets’ favour.3.Of the four literary landmarks, which can not be a consumption spot for visitors? A.Brasserie Lipp B.BoquinistesC.Père Lachaise D.Le ProcopeCaroline Tegeret comes from a small village in the remote area of Kenya. Her academic journey began like many others though filled with tremendous difficulties. The biggest challenges Tegeret had to face was the financial one since seeking law as a career is expensive. Coming from a community where girls barely get past high school doesn’t lighten the load in any way either.Upon graduating in 2017, she joined Kenya School of Law in 2018. After college, she qualified herself as a lawyer of the High Court of Kenya on July 2. 2020. “My dream to pursue a career in law began way back in high school when I developed an interest in law,” she said. What was her driving force? For Tegeret, it was the fact that in terms of development, her community was, and still is, far behind. Her community has high illiteracy levels where plenty of girls have no opportunity to attend school. Terrible cultural practices like early marriage are still very common, robbing the youth of the opportunities to be educated. She knew quite early that for her to be able to bring change to the community, she needed to be equipped with the right tools through education and knowledge of the law.As she burned the midnight oil, studying piles of history books and law cases, the memory of her father further inspired her. Her father’s determination gave her strength and motivation to pursue her dream. Coming from a humble background, he stood out for her as an example of life’s possibilities as he was able to succeed in his teaching career.Tegeret wants to work with NGOs and government agencies to promote the rights of the minority. Her desire grows stronger when she finds many people can’t speak for themselves. She wants to raise their voice and make them heard by the authorities. Her remarkable achievement is a source of encouragement to many young girls whose dreams look too big compared to their life’s circumstances. She wants to let them know they, too, have rights to choose their intended life.4.What problem did Caroline Tegeret have in pursuing her dream?A.Her poor financial condition.B.Her early marriage engagement. For people born in the 1990s and 2000s, their ideal number of babies was only 1.54 and 1.48 respectively.Furthermore, the percentage of women who have no children over their lifetime increased from 6.1 percent in 2015 to 10 percent in 2020.“A survey shows that less than 70 percent of women aged 35 and under agree that a lifewith children is complete,” he said, adding that given the low fertility rate in China, it would be extremely difficult to raise the fertility without strengthened efforts to foster a longing for marriage and family.Wang suggested devoting more efforts to the promotion of getting married and having children at proper ages and sharing family responsibilities between men and women. He also called for advancing flexible working hours, and developing nursery care and elderly care industries. He added that a range of policies from household registration and employment rules to medical insurance and social security regulations should be geared toward “protecting marriages and families.”8.Why are the numbers listed in paragraph 5?A.To applaud women’s will to have babies.B.To show the influence of delayed marriage.C.To present diverse attitudes to childbearing.D.To reason for the decline of China’s fertility.9.What does the word “foster” mean in Para.7?A.polish B.raise C.attain D.tackle 10.Which of the following may help raise the fertility according to Wang?A.Shared responsibilities in family.B.Shortened working hours. C.Regulated nursery care industry.D.Advanced medical facilities. 11.What is the purpose of the article?A.To raise the problem of birth rate fall.B.To correct people’s view of marriage. C.To call for measures to boost fertility.D.To promote the benefits of childbearing. The human thirst for knowledge is the driving force behind our successful development as a species. But curiosity can also be dangerous, leading to setbacks (挫折) or even downfalls. Given curiosity’s complexity, scientists have found it hard to define. While determining a definition has proven tricky, the general consensus is it’s some means of information gathering. Psychologists also agree curiosity is intrinsically (内在地) motivated.Curiosity covers such a large set of behaviors that there probably isn’t any single “curiosity gene” that makes humans wonder about and explore their environment. That said, curiosity does have a genetic component. Genes and the environment interact in many complex ways to shape individuals and guide their behavior, including their curiosity.Regardless of their genetic makeup, infants have to learn an incredible amount of information in a short time, and curiosity is one of the tools humans have found to accomplish that huge task.Hundreds of studies show that infants prefer novelty. It’s what motivates non-human animals, human infants and probably human adults to explore and seek out new things before growing less interested in them after continued exposure. But curiosity often comes with a cost.In some situations, the stakes are low and failure is a healthy part of growth. For instance, many babies are perfectly capable crawlers, but they decide to try walking because there’s more to see and do when they stand upright. But this milestone comes at a small cost. A study of 12- to 19-month-olds learning how to walk documented that these children fell down a lot. Seventeen times per hour, to be exact. But walking is faster than crawling, so this motivates expert crawlers to transition to walking.Sometimes, however, testing out a new idea can lead to disaster. For instance, the Inuit people of the Arctic regions have created incredible modes to deal with the challenges of living in northern climates, but what we forget about are the tens of thousands of people that tried and failed to make it in those challenging landscapes.12.What does the author say about curiosity?A.It is too complex to understand.B.It pushes human society forward.C.It is a unique quality of human.D.It always causes failures to human. 13.What is the general understanding of curiosity?A.It motivates people to seek information.B.It is certain to transform human genes. C.It does people more good than harm.D.It grounds all human behaviors. 14.What do numerous studies show about infants?A.Genes determine people’s way of thinking.B.Infants are far more curious than adults. C.Genes account for age differences in learning.D.Infants prefer to go after all that is novel.15.Why does the author mention the Inuit people?A.To prove how curiosity helped them survive.B.To show curiosity may come with a high price.C.To describe why Inuit people needed curiosity.D.To show how Inuit people overcame the challenges.二、七选五ChatGPT is a powerful chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched in November 2022.
