A 【2021·鄂州】
Chris recently completed a very unusual journey. Our reporter Mary met him at his home in south London and he told her all about the trip.
Reporter: What gave you the idea to travel around India on an elephant, Chris?
Chris: Well, it all started two years ago when I was planning a trip to India. I visited a photographic (摄影的) exhibition of elephants and I realized that the only way to travel around India was on an elephant.
Reporter: What did you do next?
Chris: I flew to New Delhi and started looking for an elephant. I needed an elephant trained to carry people. I didn’t know anything about elephants, so I asked an expert for help. He taught me how to ride an elephant. He also helped me find an elephant. Reporter: How long did it take to find a suitable elephant?
Chris: Not too long. I bought a female elephant called Tara for about USD 6, 000. Reporter: Can you tell me about the journey?
Chris: Tara and I set off from New Delhi a week later. We were heading to Sonepur in northern India where there is a big elephant market and I could sell Tara easily. And what a ride! Elephants can travel at about 6 miles an hour and Sonepur was more than 1, 200 km away. It took us 64 days to complete the journey.
Reporter: Did you have any problems on your journey?
Chris: Yes, a few. But nothing serious. On the third day, Tara hurt her foot. But that got better quickly. Also, there was a lot of heavy rain during the first week and we got very wet!
Reporter: What happened when you reached Sonepur?
Chris: My plan was to sell Tara. But by now I wa s very fond of her. I couldn’t take her back to Britain and I didn’t want to sell her at the market. By chance, I met some people who wanted an elephant for their national park in southern India. I knew that Tara would be safe with them, so I gave her to them. I was very sad to say goodbye.

One of my most embarrassing funny stories happened while I was backpacking in South America —especially during an eight-day tour from San Pedro de Atacama in Chile to Uyuni, Bolivia. The trip took me through the desert for three days to see beautiful places like hot pink lagoons (泻湖) where flamingos (火烈鸟) searched for food, a used train graveyard (墓地), and the world-famous Uyuni Salt Flats.
During the trip, I shared a car with four or five other people. At one point, I was sitting in the front seat and it was getting really hot in the car. Our driver didn’t speak English, but I spoke wonderful Spanish —at least I thought I did.
“Estoy caliente!” I said, looking right at the driver. To my surprise, instead of rolling down a window, he only looked at me in surprise.
I thought it was probably my New York accent confusing him. “Estoy caliente!”
I said again, this time in what I thought was a more local-sounding accent. He looked even more confused.
Suddenly, a native Spanish speaker in the c ar spoke up from the back: “Um, I wonder whether you want to tell the driver you’re horny (妖媚的), right?”
Clearly, the way I was saying “I’m hot” was translated into another meaning. My face turned bright red. I realized nobody understood me. They didn’t k now this —I felt hot and I needed to open the window. I had to sit in silence and try to disappear by melting in the car seat.
After the journey, I shared my story with my daughter Helen. She laughed, “Amy, I must study carefully in order not to make mist akes like yours! How embarrassing!”

53. From this passage we know “Estoy caliente” means“________ ”in English.
A. I’m really horny
B. I’m angry

B. he didn’t understand Amy’s local-sounding accent
C. the native Spanish speaker in the back stopped him
D. he had another more important thing to do
