When an earthquake hit a small town, many houses fell down. After the earthquake,
all the newspapers reported many-stories about some of the families who were in trouble.
One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper, a special picture touched me. It gave
the clothing sizes of each family member. I thought that this would be a good chance
to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves. I said to my
seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old daughter, Meghan, "We have
so m uch, b ut t hese p oor p eople n ow h ave n othing. W e’ll s hare w hat w e h ave w ith t hem."
I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this, I encouraged the
children to choose their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and games and put them together.
Then s he w alked a way. A f ew m inutes l ater s he c ame b ack w ith L ucy, h er m uch-loved d oll.
She put the doll on top of the other toys. "Oh, dear,"I said, "you don’t have
to g ive L ucy. Y ou l ove h er s o m uch. "Meghan s aid, "Lucy m akes m e h appy, M ommy. M aybe she’ll make another little girl happy, too."
I looked at Meghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. It’s easy to give something that we don’t want any more, but hard to give what we cherish, isn’t it?

Everybody hates rats. But in the earthquake capitals of the world—Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey—rats will soon be man’s new best friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are
big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a
smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal (信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back,
and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps,
the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although t here a re a lready r obots w hich c an d o t his j ob, r ats a re b etter. C hristian Linter at Cornell University —New York says, "Robots’noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that."Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity!
The "rat project"is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps
in Scotland says, "It would be wonderful. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe."Perhaps for the first
time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building(but only after an earthquake, of course).

1. living
分词短语living in different countries作定语修饰people,相当于定语从句who live
in different countries.
2. languages
5. called
III.
1. 每处错误及其修改均限一词;
