(2017·浙江丽水模拟)I had just walked in the door after dropping off the dress I had made for a friend's daughter when I received a message from my friend. “I know you worked hard on the dress and it looks very nice, but Janet doesn't like all those sequins (亮片). Could you change them?” I was annoyed. I started to call her back — until I suddenly thought of Grandma and what she had once done for me long ago when I visited her in New York City.
Once, Grandma decided to curl my hair. She spent a long time on each curl. When she finished, she sighed with delight. She was so proud that she had me stand on a chair to look in the mirror. My heart sank. I looked ridiculous. “You can go out and play now,” Grandma said, smiling.
I nodded and slowly walked down the stairs. I looked out of the small window in the door and could see the neighborhood kids playing. I knew everyone would laugh at the curls. Finally I went upstairs. I could hear my heart beating with every step. I began to feel sick. I knocked on Grandma's door. When she opened it, I said in a scared voice, “Grandma, my hair's too curly.” She never said a word. She placed a comb in water, combed out all the curls. Afterwards I went off to play.
It was when Grandma took out the curls that I knew she loved me. She had put my feelings before hers. And that is the kind of love I try to pass on today.
That memory fresh in my mind, I called my friend back. “I'd be glad to change the dress,” I said. Grandma would have been too.

(2017·嘉兴高三教学测试)The highprotein, lowcarbohydrate (碳水化合物) diets many people turn to for weight loss might have potentially harmful longterm effects on the colon,_a small study indicates.
In the study, UK researchers found that a proteinheavy, lowcarb diet created certain changes in the colon that could contribute to colon cancer risk. The study itself does not show whether highprotein diets really raise the risk of any colon diseases, but the findings raise that possibility.
Diets relatively high in protein and lower in carbs have been
shown to help heavy people lose weight. “People should not be
discouraged from losing weight,” Dr Flint said. However, he added,
they should make sure that any weight loss plan includes adequate
amounts of fiber and a high protein intake over months to years might
have ill effects on the colon.
The findings are based on 17 overweight men who followed three
shortterm diets: a oneweek menu plan to keep their weight; a fourweek highprotein diet with reasonable amounts of carbohydrates; and a fourweek highprotein diet low in carbs.
On average, the study found when the men were on the hig hprotein diets, they had higher levels of substances known as Nnitroso compounds (亚硝基化合物) and other metabolites (代谢物) that have been linked to cancer. And when they were on the
highprotein, lowcarb diet, they had lowered amounts of fiberoriginated com pounds thought to be protective against cancer.
Exactly what those changes might mean for a person's health is not clear, but Flint said that the findings suggest that people should be cautious about consuming too much protein and too little fiber over a long period. In general, experts recommend that adults get about 28 grams of fiber per day — though it's not known whether that's enough for someone on a highprotein weightloss diet.

“Want to help fight global warming? Take off your tie,” says the Italian Health Ministry.
It has urged employers to let their staff dress casually at work in the summer so that the air conditioning can be turned down.
“Taking your tie off immediately lowers the body temperature by 2 or 3 degrees centigrade,” the Ministry said in a statement. “Allowing a more sensible use of air conditioning brings about electricity savings and protects the environment.”
It called on all public and private offices to let employees wear no tie during heat waves like the one that has brought Africalike temperatures to many parts of Italy this week.
The move echoes (回应) a similar action from Italy's biggest oil group, ENI, which told its staff earlier this month they need not wear a tie at work.
The tie makers, however, were left hot_under_the_collar.
“Italy confirms that it is a strange country,” Flavio Cima said angrily in a letter to financial daily IL SOLE 24 ORE unde r the headline “I, tie maker, am responsible for global warming”.
“We can now happily continue with our lifestyle, using cars, consuming fuel, heating and cooling our homes at leisure. On one condition: we should not wear a tie while we do so,” he wrote.
“I should have listened to my friends and become an oil producer instead.”
Italy is one of the European Union's worst performers on the pollution front and is among the EU countries expected to exceed (超出) their greenhouse gas emission (排放) targets.
