John Steinbeck was a great American writer. He was born in Salinas, California on February 27, 1902. His mother, a teacher, fostered (培养) Steinbeck’s love of reading and the written word. We have most friends at the age of 26 after having spent the first quarter of our lives building up our friendship circle, a new research has claimed.
The research into friendship shows that our social circle peaks at 26 years and 7 months, at which we typically have five close friends. Women are most popular at 25 years and 10 months, with men hitting the highest friendship point a little later at 27 years and 3 months.
The research, by Forever Friends, shows that about a third of adults meet their closest friends while at school, with about a fifth saying they meet them at work.
Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter now also play a major role in building new friendship. The research points out that 25 to 34-year-olds make 22 friends via Facebook, compared to 18 to 24-year-olds who make 12, and 35 to 44-year-olds who make just four.
Forever Friends’ relationship coach Sam Owen says:"It is no coincidence that over a third of us meet our best friends at school. It is a key time in our lives when friendship is growing through sharing notes, giving gifts, seeing each other regularly and laughing a lot. As adults we can often forget how powerful these small things are and how the little things can make a difference."Later in life we find ourselves losing friends. Over half of us lose friendship through moving, while 36% say that over time they grow apart from close pals. Having children also causes 19% to drift away from childhood friends.
With growing pressures being put on friendship these days, it’s important to make time for our friendship.
9. How many friends can a 20-year-old college student make via Facebook?
A. 4.
B. 12.
C. 18.
D. 22.
10. In Paragraph 5, the author is trying to tell the readers ___________.
A. how important making friends is
B. that friendship is not easy to keep
C. how much has been done to keep friendship
D. that friendship at school is important
11. The underlined phrase "drift away from"in Paragraph 6 means "___________".
A. make sense of
B. lose contact with
C. feel sorry for
D. make up with
12. This passage is most probably taken from ___________.
A. Facebook or Twitter
B. an advertisement
C. a textbook
D. a newspaper

Over half of us lose friendship...apart
from close pals"及画线词所在句"Having children also causes 19% to...childhood friends"可以判断,画线词意为"失去联系",故B项正确。

D
Every year there are hundreds of earthquakes in different parts of the world. In September, 1923, Tokyo and Yokohama were both destroyed by an earthquake and the fires that followed it. They had to be completely rebuilt. One of the most serious earthquakes was in China’s Shaanxi Province in 1556. It killed almost one million people.
We measure an earthquake’s strength on the Richter Scale. The Richter Scale was introduced in 1935 in Southern California in the USA. It measures earthquakes on a scale of one to ten. Any earthquake measuring five or more is usually serious.
The Earth’s crust(地壳) is made up of rock called plates. As these plates move, they sometimes crash against each other, causing the crust to quake. In cities such as Tokyo, where small quakes happen quite often, many modern buildings are designed to be flexible so when the plate moves, they move with it.
Earthquakes can also break up gas and oil pipes. This can cause fires to break out, which can do as much damage as the earthquake itself. Another effect of earthquakes is tsunami. These are huge waves created by earthquakes beneath the sea. They can be many meters high and cause great damage to coastal towns and cities. China, Japan, Russia and the USA have the highest occurrence (发生) of earthquakes in the world.
13. The passage is mainly about .
A. scientists who study earthquakes
B. the way of measuring earthquakes
C. a usual natural disaster — earthquakes
D. what people should do in the earthquake
14. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. The earthquake in Shaanxi Province happened in 1556.
B. The earthquake in Shaanxi Province killed almost one million people.
C. The earthquake in Shaanxi Province caused a lot of damage.
D. The earthquake in Shaanxi Province was the only earthquake in China.
15. According to the passage we know that tsunamis .
A. can cause earthquakes
B. are caused by earthquakes
C. only happen on land
D. are a way of measuring earthquakes

17Wrong. Research has shown by doing this you are disempowering the other person because you are taking control of the conversation, so bite your tongue!
Paraphrase.
If you want to show that you have really understood someone, then paraphrasing(解释) is a great tool. ____18____ Here’s an example: "So Barney, what I’m hearing is that results a re the number one objective for you right now and we need to find some fast solutions for you?"
19
Focus on active listening instead of passive listening. The difference is that active listening means you engage with and respond to the other person based on what he/she has said, while passive listening is simply the act of listening with no response.
Maintain eye contact.
By looking at the other person in the eyes, you are proving that you’re interested in what he/she is saying. ____20____

B. Listen actively.
C. Never interrupt people.
D. This also keeps you focused and less distracted.

Do you have the time? This is a very commonly 41(ask) question, whether in American, British, __42__ Australian English. If I 43(be) the editor of the Grand Encyclopedia of Excuses, I think that "I don’t have the time"would win the prize for being the most commonly used excuse, year after year.
No one 44(give) you the time. It’s you that make the time, as well as most of the related decisions about what is important. The key is what criteria(标准) you rely 45. If you don’t decide on the use of your time, the decision will be taken away from you. Another 46(say) in English is "Take your time", which is similar to the Chinese "慢慢来". I see a 47(deep) meaning of this simple phrase, which is that if you don’t take your time, someone else will do so for you.
If you think about your friends, 48(colleague) and business partners, it’s no t difficult to divide them into two kinds: those rare ones who always make time for you when you need them, and those common folks who __49__ (most) don’t. When you look back on your life, you’ll be more appreciative of those occasions 50you made the time than those when you seized the advantage.

41. asked

whether...or..."不论是……还是……",符合语境。

43. were 考查虚拟语气。

根据语境"假如我是《借口大辞海》的编辑"可知,该从句表示与
现在事实相反的虚拟语气,故用were。

48. colleagues

49. mostly

充完整为"who mostly don’t make time for you when you need them"。
