M:Hello, Ann! How long has it been? Wasn't it a year ago at Christmas, the last time I saw you?
W:You know, I think you're right. How are your children and wife?
M:Oh, they're fine. Billy fell down and broke his leg a few months ago, but other than that, there has been nothing special.
W:And your wife? What is she doing these days?
M:She's going to a night school on Mondays and Thursdays.
W:How nice for her!

A businessman was at a pier (码头) in a small coastal village when a small boat with just one fisherman stopped. Inside the small boat were several large fish. The businessman asked how long it took to catch them.
The fisherman replied, “Only a little while.” The businessman then asked why he didn't stay out longer and catch more fish. The fisherman said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs.
The businessman then asked the fisherman how he spent the rest of his time. The fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a rest with my wife, Maria, walk into the village each evening where I drink wine and play the guitar with my friends. I have a full and busy life, sir.”
The businessman laughed, “You should spend more time fishing and earn more money. Then you can buy more boats, and finally you would have a group of fishing boats. The fisherman asked, “But sir, how long will this all take?”
The businessman replied, “15 to 20 years.”

“Millions, sir?” replied the fisherman. “Then what?”

Today we travel to film festivals around the world to learn about their different histories and goals. Some of the festivals are major competitions, while others are smaller events to help draw attention to more experimental movies.
One of the most famous film festivals in the world takes place in the French town of Cannes annually usually in May. The Cannes Film Festival started in 1946 as a social gathering for showing movies. Later, the popular event developed into an important competition.
Visitors to the festival see short films and films which don't compete for awards. But the Cannes Film Festival is more than about honoring special movies and seeing famous actors. Each year, more than 1,000 people from almost 100 countries gather to watch about 900 movies. This helps link people from all areas of the movie industry. Also, it helps filmmakers sell their movies to distributors (发行人) so they can be shown in theaters around the world.
Another famous one is the Venice International Film Festival in August. Started in 1932, it's one of the oldest movie festivals in the world.
Many film festivals have very specialized (专门的) subjects. In Belgium you can go to the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. This festival has been showing science fiction and horror movies from around the world. If this event seems too frightening, you can attend the International Children's Film Festival in Frankfurt, Germany. In Turkey, the International Istanbul Film Festival shows movies about art, music, dance or literature.
On any given day, a film festival is probably taking place somewhere around the world. Here we've only discussed a small number of them.

How to sing like a superstar is a question people have been asking for ages. We naturally look up to the stars we want to sound like when we're young and just experimenting with singing. But as we get older, we find that we have our own voice.
In my opinion, you can only be a superstar if you find your own voice. If you want to sound great and attract people, just get comfortable with your own voice. Do you think Bob Dylan has a great voice? Of course not, but people love his voice and his songs. One of the main reasons is that he's very comfortable with himself and his own voice. So, remember this when you're asking yourself how to sing like a superstar.
I hate hearing many singers trying to imitate (模仿) other singers! But it still happens all the time and yes, some of them do become famous by trying to sound like others. I just don't feel like I'm listening to real art when I hear these socalled stars trying to imitate someone else with their voice.
Now one thing I like to do is to sing other people's songs in my own voice. Yes, you can practice a great song by an artist you love while you're driving down the
road, but practice it in your own voice not his or her voice. Turn down the volume (音量) a little and hear your own natural voice singing the song and giving it a totally new flavor!
That's exciting and you're being true to yourself. We're supposed to be artists and that means expressing ourselves in a unique way. So if you're asking how to sing like a superstar, remember to just use your own voice.
28.The author uses Bob Dylan as an example in order to tell us that ________.
A.Bob Dylan is a great singer
B.superstars usually have a great voice
C.a great voice helps to make a great singer
D.we should feel comfortable with our own voice
29.What advice does the author give on practicing singing?
A.Never singing others' songs.
B.Practicing singing in your car.
C.Singing the song in your own style.
D.Turning off the music while singing.
30.What is the author's attitude towards singers' imitating other singers?
A.Negative. B.Unconcerned.
C.Positive. D.Doubtful.
31.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Young people tend to imitate the stars they love.
B.It's not real art to sing other people's songs.
C.People love songs sung in a unique way.
D.The author is a famous singer.

I work for a company in the hospitality (招待) industry that suffered heavy layoffs and a poor pay in the past year.
I was hired as the Director of New Business Development, and as business grew, I hired a young man with whom I'd worked for several years before to be my group leader, as his knowledge and experience was valuable. He was hired at a rate of $10 per hour, well below the $16.50 he had been paid at our former company, but with the promise that he would receive a review in three months. Three months came and went, and management failed to give that welldeserved rise. I insisted that his supervisor (主管) give him a formal review, and the promised rise.
After the interview, the supervisor came to me with tears in his eyes, and told me what Aaron had done. “That boy has more character than anyone I've ever worked with. He sat there and made the case as to why he deserved the rise, detailed the many hours he'd worked off the clock and his value to the company. I couldn't disagree, and I gave him the rise. Just a dollar an hour, but all we could do right now. He thanked me, and said how much he appreciated it, then said, ‘Nate works really hard and is really struggling. $40 a week would make a lot of difference to him. I know you can't give everyone who deserves it a rise, so please give my dollar an hour to Nate. I know he needs it more than I do.’”
For a person of his age, with actually nothing to his fame but the clothes on his back, to help someone with even less was inspiring. God bless you, Aaron.

A.Aaron was his best friend.
B.Aaron had a large family to support.
C.Aaron was experienced in hospitality industry.
D.Aaron was familiar with the present company.
33.After the interview, the supervisor thought that ________.
A.Aaron deserved a pay rise
B.$40 a week was too much for Aaron
C.Aaron was much better than the author
D.it was the author who needed a pay rise
34.What can we learn about Aaron?
A.He enjoyed living a simple life.
B.He was kind and warmhearted.
C.He was too strict with the employees.
D.He valued fame and wealth very much.
35.What was the probable reason why the author didn't get a high pay?
A.He didn't work hard.
B.He gave it up himself.
C.His boss didn't want to do so.
D.His company was in bad conditions.
