21.(6分)Many thousands of Chinese are studying at schools in the United States. And writer Liel Leibovitz says the students are following an example that began in the eighteen seventies.
Mr. Leibovitz and writer Matthew Miller joined forces to tell the story of the students in their book, “Fortunate Sons.” The book says China sent one hundred and twenty boys from 1872 to 1875 to America to learn about developments that could help modernize their country.
Mr. Leibovitz got the idea for the book about the boys a few years ago when he was traveling with his wife in China.
Mr. Leibovitz learned that Qing government sent a whole delegation (代表团) of boys to learn the ways of the West. The goal was for them to return to China and help their country.
The book says the boys received their American training in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. It must have been a very good education. Mr. Leibovitz says the first prime minister of the Chinese Republic completed this program. And so did the first engineer to build a large-scale railroad without foreign help. The same was true of the fathers of Chinese education, diplomacy and the Navy.
The book-writers had only to open some boxes containing the writings of these men to learn about them. Their notebooks, Journals, letters and postcards were in English. Mr. Leibovitz said he was lucky to have so much information from events that took place long ago.
The students returned to China after about nine years. They no longer spoke Mandarin (国语) well enough to answer questions. Police welcomed them home by
putting them in jail. The young men were released after about a week. But they were given low-level jobs.
Mr Leibovitz says it took about ten years for them to rise to higher positions. He said their story continues today with large numbers of Chinese studying in the United States.

22.(8分)Christmas at the mountain cline would have to wait. The banks beside Mary Breckinridge’s Wendover, Kentucky, clinic were ruined after a heavy rain. She had to find a way to get her five patients to the hospital in Lexington.
With a neighbor’s help, Mary and the nurses built a boat. They named it Ambulance, and on the morning of December 30,1926. Mary another nurse, and the patients set off down the river. After sixteen wild miles on the dangerous river, they arrived at the train station in Krypton. As she watched the train pull away with her patients safely on board. Mary smiled and waved.
Mary had not planned to be a nurse. She was the daughter of a wealthy Kentucky politician. As a child, Mary was influenced by her family who had always been concerned about the poorer people of the state. When she grew up, Mary was inspired to become a nurse. So in 1925 Mary hired a few British-trained nurses and, with some money from her family, started the Frontier Nursing Service in Wendover, Kentucky.
Before Mary and her nurses came, the mountain people lived a hard life. Families
made so little money that they could not afford doctors or medicine. Many children had diseases and nearly every person was malnourished for lack of food.
Mary and the nurses built clinics and a small hospital deep in the forests of Leslie County. There were no paved roads, electricity, or telephones. Each day the nurses rode on horseback to outlying farms, often in bad wenther, to answer calls for help. They worked hard to keep an eye on their patients.
To the grateful mountain people, Mary and the nurses seemed to be everywhere. They treated everything from cut fingers to pneumonia(肺炎), gave shots, and delivered babies. The proud countrymen liked the nurses because they treated everyone with respect.
The Frontier Nursing Service grew. Today their Nursing Service reaches far beyond the Kentucky mountains. Medical professionals from all over the world come to Wendover to study rural health care in action. When these men and women go back to their own countries, they are prepared to help people in need.

23.(8分)Years ago, students applying to colleges and universities had to have their applications and personal essays printed out and then “snail-mailed”. Flash forward to
today’s world of Facebook, Instagram and WeChat, where photos, videos and mobile phones rule. Fortunately, several new tools are making it easier for college applicants to use technology to show off their personalities, skills and creativity.
ZEEMEE
One of the more popular innovations in college applications is ZeeMee, a free mobile app that allows students to upload personal profiles and videos to create visual resumes. More than 220 colleges and universities offer a ZeeMee option as part of the application process. The video can show the unique creative aspects of the applicants.
THE COALITION LOCKER
Another relatively new tool comes from the Coalition for Access, Affordability and Success, now used by more than 110 member colleges and universities. Among the group’s stated goals are getting students engaged in college prep early and us ing technology to create a supportive application process that encourages reflection and self-discovery.
Students who sign up for the free platform get access to a digital “locker”, which they can use all through high school to save class papers, artwork, newspaper stories, videos and photos to share with colleges when they eventually apply.
VIDEO — CHAT INTERVIEWS
At some schools, an interview with an admission officer is an important part of the application process. To make it easier, several virtual interviewing tools have popped up, such as a video-based platform from Kira. More than 140 universities worldwide use Kira’s video assessment tool to conduct real-time interviews with prospective students. During the interview, candidates are shown the questions prerecorded by the particular school and must respond in real time by talking into the camera on their laptop or phone. In addition to showing their ability, to speak fluently in English and think on their feet, it helps admission officers determine the “motivation, commitment and drive” of applicants.
UNIQUE SCHOOL TOOLS
Some universities have come up with their own ways to allow students to show their skills and personalities. For example, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, encourages applicants to display their technical abilities and creativity by submitting a “Maker Portfolio” —a written or videotaped description of a project that shows creative
and problem-solving skills. While a new app would fit the bill, the project could be anything from an origami design to a potato cannon.
1、Which of the apps give students more guidance from their high school? A.ZEEMEE. B.THE COALITION LOCKER.
C.VIDEO — CHAT INTERVIEWS. D.UNIQUE SCHOOL TOOLS.
2、What does the underlined word “it” in the fourth part of the passage refer to? A.The video interview. B.The description.

24.(8分)Are you afraid of sharks? What about snakes or spiders? Put those fears aside: because in the U.S. you’re far more likely to be killed or injured by a deer skipping across the road.
Deer cause more than 200 humans deaths each year, plus some 29,000 injuries, all because of 1.2 million collisions between vehicles and deer. Most incidents occur in the eastern U.S., where deer prosper without natural predators like wolves and mountain lions.
“That’s the region in the U.S. where deer-vehicle collisions are such a problem, and where it seems like an effective large carnivore reintroduction could make a really big difference.” says wildlife biologist Laura Prugh from University of Washington. She thinks it would help to reintroduce predators like mountain lions, also known as cougars, pumas or panthers, to parts of their historic range from which they’ve been driven out.
The researchers say that bringing the predators back to the eastern U.S. would mean 22 percent fewer collisions between cars and deer over three decades. Each year would see five fewer human deaths, 680 fewer injuries and a savings of some 550 million. Sophie L. Gilbert thinks there are great socioeconomic benefits of large predator restoration through reduced wildlife-vehicle collisions and sh e says, says, “Cougars have shown that they can coexist in short distance with people, with very few conflicts, in a lot of areas out west.”
Still, some folks might be understandably nervous about this kind of plan. After all,
reintroducing predators doesn’t come without risks to pets and to livestock, and very occasionally to people.
“Our fear of large predators is so natural and intense that I don’t think it’s possible to just completely clear it with statistics... What I hope is that knowing that there actually can be some measurable benefits might make people a little more supportive and maybe balance that fear a little bit.” says Laura.
Indeed, the statistics show that cougars would prevent five times as many human deaths from deer-related accidents as they would cause by attacks. But it’ll be a tough sell: the press will cover cougar attacks, but a statistically prevented death does not make the news. Nevertheless, “If people in the west can put up with having mountain lions around, I would hope that Ne w Yorkers would be up for the challenge as well.”
1、What is closest in meaning to the underlined word “carnivore” in Paragraph 3? A.A cat-like animal.
B.A dangerous animal.
C.A meat-eating animal.
D.A grass-eating animal.
2、Why do people want to bring back mountain lions?
A.To minimize the accidents caused by deer.
B.To maintain biodiversity and ecological balance.
C.To take up the challenge from people in the west.
D.To reduce people’s fear of this dangerous creature.
3、Why is it hard to persuade people to accept this measure?
A.Because the risks outweigh the benefits.
B.Because mountains lions like eating people.
C.Because the benefits are not as eye-catching as its risks.
D.Because mountain lions tend to get too close to people.
4、What is the best title for the text?
A.Puma: a Tough Sell
B.A New Study on Puma
C.Deer Cause Huge Life Losses
D.Deer or Pumas: a Hard Choice
25.(10分)When a special occasion arrives,a colorful gift bag or a box often
finds its way to a doorstep,an office desk or a mailbox. But once in a while,a present arrives at an unexpected moment as a reminder that someone is thinking about us.Wanda Anderson of Richland,US,remembers such a gift. The rosebushes were finally in full bloom on that day in spring.Seeing roses always brings to mind Wanda's childhood memories. To this young girl, those flowers were a luxury."We never had money to buy extra things,so even a tired rose was something to cherish," Wanda said.
Nowadays,to have a backyard filled with many different roses is pure enjoyment.Wanda especially loves the very first blooms. Her husband,Dale, devotedly tends the roses and knows this little fact about his wife. So,on this particular morning,he picked the very first flowers of spring, fresh from the garden. But as Dale came back into the house,he was met by a neighbor who had stopped in for a quick visit. As the woman turned to go,Dale graciously (有风度地)handed the roses to her.And even though their visitor insisted she didn't want to take them, she was repeatedly convinced that the flowers were hers to keep."I told her I was happy for her to have the roses, but I really wasn't," Wanda said, recalling the emotions she was feeling right then.
Seeing her very precious first blooms go out of the door filled her with regret, and a bit of selfishness.Throughout the rest of the morning,Wanda argued with herself, knowing logically it was "better to give than to receive." Nevertheless, she wished she could have kept the roses for herself.
Later that day,the couple headed to the post office, where Wanda waited outside in the car. Then, without warning,an older woman suddenly appeared at the car's open window, with a bunch of multicolored roses in her arms."These are for you," she said, giving the flowers to Wanda."They're my first blooms this spring." Totally surprised and overwhelmed (不知所措的),Wanda thanked the woman and bent for a moment to inhale (吸入)the roses' rich fragrance. When she looked back, the mysterious visitor was gone.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Nowadays, more and more people call the Take-out food. Our class had a heated discussion about the phenomenon.
Some students think the Take-out food is very delicious and convenient. It can save much time for us. What’s more, there are many kinds of food for you to choose.
While other students think the Take-out food is unhealthy because it contains too much fat or salt. Besides, the food hygiene is worrying, sometimes it makes people have a stomachache. What’s worse, too many food boxes cause much pollution to our environment.
In my opinion, in order to be healthier and safer, we shouldn’t eat too much Take-out
food. We should often have meals at home or at school canteen.。
