2.2.7 Notch Filter Assembly

The Notch Filter Assmebly (NFA) is an RF filter consisting of a dual-notch band-pass filter and a circulator. An RF filter, by definition, is a device used to reject signals of certain frequencies while allowing others to pass. The band-pass filter prevents transmissions of the JTIDS waveform in both the Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) transponder frequency bands centered on 1030 MHz and 1090 MHz. The Circulator routes outgoing transmissions to the antenna and routes incoming signals received from the antenna to the R/T. An RF Limiter prevents the receiver from being overdriven by nearby transmitters. All Ship and E2C platforms contain the NFA. F-14D's currently do not have an NFA installed.

Notch Filter Group

The Notch Filter Group (NFG) consists of a Notch Filter Assembly (NFA) and an attached RF Limiter. The NFG is normally located in the same space as the ECA, and is connected between the shipboard radio set and the transmit/receive (T/R) antenna.

The NFA consists of: a dual (notch) band reject filter, a circulator, and a band pass filter. The dual band reject filter provides attenuation of the transmitted RF in the IFF bands (1030 +/- 7 MHz and 1090 +/- 7 MHz), to avoid interference with collocated IFF equipment. The circulator directs the outgoing transmissions from the HPAG to the (T/R) antenna; incoming signals from the (T/R) antenna are directed through the RF limiter to the R/T.

The RF Limiter limits power to the input of the R/T. Reflected power from the antenna and output power leaking through the circulation are approximately the same level. The limited keeps excessive RF, from any source, from damaging the R/T
