About the year 1890, a small, dark-haired child named Charlie Chaplin was often seen waiting outside the back entrance of London theaters. He looked thin and hungry. He was hoping to get work in show business. He could sing and dance, and above all, he knew how to make people laugh. But he couldn’t get work and therefore wandered about the city streets. Sometimes he was sent away to a home for children who had no parents.
But twenty years later this name Chaplin became the greatest, best known, and best loved actor in the world. Nearly all visitors to the cinema must have seen some of Charlie Chaplin’s films. People everywhere have sat and laughed at them until tears ran down their faces. Even people who don’t understand English can enjoy Chaplin’s films because they are almost silent. It isn’t what he says that makes us laugh. His comedy doesn’t depend upon words or languages. It depends upon little actions, which mean the same thing to people all over the world. Acting out, without words, of common human situations plays an important part in the dances and plays of many countries. It’s a kind of world language.

Lisa was running late. Lisa, 25, had a lot to do at work, plus visitors on the way: her parents were coming in for Thanksgiving from her hometown. But as she hurried down the subway stairs, she started to feel uncomfortably warm. By the time she got to the platform,Lisa felt weak and tired—maybe it hadn’t been a good idea to give blood the night before, she thought. She rested herself against a post close to the tracks.
Several yards away, Frank ,43, and his girlfriend, Jennifer, found a spot close to where the front of the train would stop. They were deep in discussion about a house they were thinking of buying.
But when he heard the scream, followed by someone yelling,“Oh, my God, she fell in!”Frank didn’t hesitate. He jumped down to the tracks and ran some 40 feet toward the body lying on the rails. “No ! Not you ! ”his girlfriend screamed after him. She was right to be alarmed. By the time Frank reached Lisa,he could feel the tracks shaking and see the light coming. The train was about 20 seconds from the station.
It was hard to lift her. She was just out. But he managed to raise her the four feet to the platform so that bystanders could hold her by the arms and drag her away from the edge. That was where Lisa briefly regained consciousness, felt herself being pulled along the ground, and saw someone else holding her purse.
Lisa thought she’d been robbed. A woman held her hand and a man gave his shirt to help stop the blood pouring from her head. And she tried to talk but she couldn’t,and that was when she realized how much pain she was in.
Police and fire officials soon arrived, and Frank told the story to an officer. Jennifer said her boyfriend was calm on their 40minute train ride downtown—just as he had been seconds after the rescue, which made her think about her reaction at the time. “I saw the train coming and I was thinking he was going to die,” she explained.

A. By lifting her to the platform.
B. By helping her rise to her feet.

China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I’ve found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it’s the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors---sivler, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It’s fun watching people b iking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can’t provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly (守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times.
I didn’t want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.
37. According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?
A. Because they are traditional and safe.
B. Because they are convenient and inexpensive.
C. Because they are colorful and available.
D. Because they are fast and environment friendly.
38. The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended ______________.
A. to ride it for fun
B. to use it for transport
C. to experience local skills
D. to improve his riding skills
39. How did the author feel about his street crossing?
A. It was boring.
B. It was difficult.
C. It was lively.
D. It was wonderful.
40. Which of the following best describes the author’s biking experience?
A. The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.
B. The author was annoyed by the air while riding.
C. The author was praised by the other bikers.
D. The author took great pleasure in biking.

Spring is coming. For students in the US, that means a vacation is on its way. In the US, students may begin their spring vacation at different times, depending on where they live. So while students from one town are on vacation, their neighbors in the next town might have classes as usual.
Spring vacation is also known as “spring break”. During this time, students have one to two weeks off from school. The break usually happens in late March or April. Spring break is a fun and relaxing time. Teachers usually don't give assignments over the break, so students can spend their days and nights free from schooltime stress.
There are lots of ways to spend the time. Some families go on vacation, visiting a new state or even a new country. Others may travel to visit family members who live far away. Or students may enjoy the break by relaxing at home, reading books and watching movies, or visiting friends' houses.
Sometimes teachers lead overseas trips for groups of students. On a tend ay trip, for example, students might go on a tour through Spain, France, and Italy. These trips are often expensive, but they give students an unusual chance to see other parts of the world.
No matter how they've spent the break students return to school feeling relaxed and ready to finish the school year.
