Changes from 30 Years Ago to 30 Years in the Future
By a 5th Grade Student
What will the world be like 30 years from now compared to 30 years ago? That's a really big question to think about! The world has already changed so much in the last 30 years. My parents and grandparents tell me stories about what life was like back then and it seems like a totally different world. I can't even imagine how different things will be 30 years from now!
Let me start by talking about what my grandparents say the world was like 30 years ago back in the 1990s. From what I understand, there was no internet or smartphones back then! Can you believe that? No Google, no social media, no watching videos or playing games on a portable screen. If you wanted to look something up, you had to go to the library and find a book about it. If you wanted to call someone, you had to use a home phone that was actually attached to a cable in the wall. Wild!
My grandparents say they used to have to print out directions from a website called MapQuest if they wanted to get somewhere new. There were no apps or GPS to just tell you how to get there. They actually had to read a paper map and figure it out themselves. Speaking of paper, kids back then had to write on notebooks with pencils and pens rather than typing on a laptop or tablet. So old fashioned!
Another crazy thing is that back in the 90s, if you wanted to watch a movie you had to go to a video rental store like Blockbuster and rent a VHS tape or DVD to watch at home. There was no Netflix or streaming movies instantly. You had to rewind the tape when you were done too! Music also came on CDs rather than streaming or downloading it.
From the stories I've heard, 30 years ago the world was a lot less connected in general. My grandparents say they used to have to wait for the 6 o'clock evening news to find out what was happening in the world that day rather than getting instant updates on their phones. Can you imagine only getting news updates once a day? Things must have moved so slowly back then!
Enough about the old days, let's talk about what the future might hold 30 years from now in the year 2054. A lot of the
technology we have today will probably seem just as outdated and crazy to kids back then as the 90s seems to me now!
I think in 30 years, virtual reality is going to be a huge part of everyday life. We'll have lightweight VR glasses or contact lenses that make digital objects look totally real. School will have virtual classrooms where we're transported to 3D environments to learn subjects in a much more immersive and interactive way. Maybe some kids will even go to school entirely in virtual reality from home!
We'll probably also have self-driving cars and drone delivery services everywhere. Getting around and having things brought right to your door will be even more convenient and autonomous than it is now with ride shares and services like Amazon Prime. I'm not sure if we'll still have gas-powered regular cars or if everything will be electric and
computer-controlled by then.
One thing that definitely will keep advancing is artificial intelligence and robotics. We already have digital assistants like Siri and Alexa, but in 30 years they may be extraordinarily intelligent and human-like. We could have humanoid robot assistants that can do all kinds of tasks for us. AI might be smart enough to be our teachers and even make scientific discoveries.
Though hopefully the AI doesn't get too smart and take over the world - I've seen enough movies to know that probably won't end well!
Medicine will also keep evolving rapidly. In the future, doctors may be able to use nanobots and genetic treatments to cure any kind of disease or condition. We might be able to regrow limbs or organs, or have microscopic robots patrol our bodies and fix problems as soon as they start. Surgeries could be done by tiny robots rather than doctors cutting us open. If medicine advances enough, humans could potentially live much longer lives free of sickness and aging. Though I'm not sure I'd want to live for hundreds of years!
There's also a lot of talk about colonizing other planets like Mars in the coming decades. While that seems pretty far-fetched, who knows - maybe kids in 30 years will be taking field trips to Mars colonies! Or at least have way better simulations of what that experience could be like compared to today.
Thinking about all these possibilities for technological and scientific progress is both really exciting and a little scary. Change often happens faster than we expect, so I'm sure there will be mind-blowing advancements 30 years from now that no one saw coming. Hopefully as smart as we get with technology,
we'll still have held onto our humanity and all the things that make life really meaningful beyond just the latest gadgets.
What seemed mind-bendingly futuristic in the 1990s is now totally normal to us today. So just imagine how shocking today's world must have seemed 30 years ago! It makes you wonder what kinds of things will seem outdated and antiquated 30 years from now that we currently think are cutting edge. I guess only time will tell what kinds of new wonders and terrors the future may bring. But one thing is for sure - the world 30 years from now will be a very different place whether we're ready for it or not!

Changes Between 30 Years Ago and 30 Years From Now
By A 5th Grader
Wow, can you imagine what the world was like 30 whole years before I was born? Or what it will be like 30 years after I'm an adult? A lot can change in 30 years! My parents and grandparents have told me stories about how different things were 30 years ago compared to today. And I can't even wrap my head around what mind-blowing inventions and changes might
happen in the next 30 years when I'm a grown-up! It's fun to imagine.
Let's start by thinking about 30 years ago, back in the 1990s when my parents were kids. From what I've heard, that was a pretty different time! Back then, they didn't have all the cool tech gadgets and gizmos that we have today. Can you believe nobody had smartphones or tablets back then? No iPhone, no Samsung Galaxy, no iPad! How did they even look things up or play games or watch videos?
Well, my dad says they had these big desktop computers that stayed in one place on a desk. The screens were tiny compared to the huge TVs we have now. And instead of WiFi, they had to use these cabled "modems" and dial-up to slowly connect to the early versions of the internet. My dad says he would have to wait forever just for one website to load back in those days. No way could they stream movies and shows instantly like we do now!
Speaking of TVs, my parents say the only way to watch TV shows in the 1990s was when they aired live on cable or broadcast channels. There was no Netflix, Hulu, or Disney+ to binge-watch anything you wanted on-demand. If you missed an episode of your favorite show, you just missed it unless you
taped it on a VCR! Can you imagine? No pausing live TV, no rewinding, no skipping commercials or intros. You just had to sit there and wait for the next episode next week. So weird!
My grandparents have told me about not having cell phones at all back then too. Just landlines that were attached by cords to the wall! If you got a phone call away from home, you'd totally miss it unless you were near your house phone. No texting, no mobile games, no phone cameras to take selfies. How did kids even keep in touch with their friends? By writing notes to pass around at school or making calls on the house phone when they got home? That sounds so inconvenient!
Other things seem crazy outdated from 30 years ago too. No detailed GPS for driving directions - they had to use huge folding maps made of paper! Cameras used actual film that had to be developed at a store instead of digital photos. Music was listened to on CDs, cassette tapes, or the radio instead of streaming services. Video games were basic and pixelated instead of the hyper-realistic graphics we have now. Can't imagine life without our modern conveniences!
But maybe the most fascinating thing is how different computing and the internet were 30 years ago. My mind is blown realizing the world wide web was still pretty new in the early
1990s! Social media, search engines, online shopping, and video calls hadn't really taken off yet. My parents had to actually go to libraries and use heavy printed books called "encyclopedias" to look stuff up rather than just Googling it. Wild!
I'm really glad I was born in the 2010s instead of the 1990s. I don't think I could survive without all the awesome technology we have now that makes life so much easier. Who knows what incredible advancements will happen in the next 30 years by the time I'm a grown-up though?
It's exciting to imagine where computers and AI might go. Maybe we'll have hyper-intelligent robot assistants to help us with absolutely anything? Perhaps we'll be able to control computers just with our mind and voice instead of keyboards and mice. Or have photographic digital glasses to go online with augmented reality vision anywhere. Self-driving cars that can take us anywhere without human drivers could be normal. Hopefully technology will keep making our lives easier and more efficient.
I also wonder how communication methods will evolve. Smartphones are already so incredible for texting, social sharing, and video calling from anywhere. But maybe we'll have totally mind-blowing ways of telecommunicating in 30 years? Like
those video communication necklaces from the Jetsons cartoon where you can see 3D holograms of people you're talking to! Or having microchip implants in our bodies to control devices and the internet with our thoughts. That would be amazing and terrifying at the same time!
Advancements in medicine and health could be some of the most important things too. Already we have way more treatments, surgeries, and prevention for diseases than we used to. I've heard they are working on nanotechnology to maybe reprogram cells and extend our lifespans. Or editing genes to cure genetic disorders before babies are even born. In 30 years, beating cancer and living to 100+ could be normal!
Then there are changes that might happen to the environment and global society. My teachers warn us about climate change and how we need sustainable energy like solar and wind power. Hopefully in 30 years those will be way more common than oil, gas and coal that pollute the air and water. The polar ice caps and rainforests could still exist rather than melting or being burned down by greed!
Another crazy idea - in 30 years we might even have human colonies living on other planets! Or at least on the moon or Mars. Space travel and exploration seems to be taking off, using things
like reusable rockets by companies like SpaceX. Who knows if Earth will still be our only home 30 years from now?
I'm honestly a little worried about some of the possibilities for 30 years from now too though. Like if we advance too far with artificial super-intelligence without being careful, will robots become smarter than humans and take over? What if we create scientific things like biological weapons or other horrible technology that causes a dystopian future? Hackers, online predators, and social media addiction already seem to cause problems in 2023. Those issues could be way worse in a few decades if we aren't responsible with tech.
War, inequality, and human rights abuses could sadly still be major global issues in 2053 too. Hopefully the world becomes more unified and we evolve as a species to treat each other better regardless of race, gender, religion, etc. Poverty and hunger still impact way too many people currently despite all our progress. I hope in 30 years we'll find solutions to end those struggles for good and have more peace on Earth.
Anyway, those are just some of my thoughts comparing today to the 1990s versus what the 2050s could potentially look like! Of course, none of us can predict the future. I'm just using my imagination based on trends and what I've learned in school
about history, science, and technology. I'm super excited to see what mind-bending new realities unfold over the next 30 years as I grow up. But I'm also a little nervous about negative consequences if we aren't careful with our advancements. What an amazing and scary time to be alive!

Changes Between 30 Years Ago and 30 Years From Now
Hello everyone! My name is Emma and I'm a 5th grader at Oakwood Elementary School. Today, I'm going to write about how different things were 30 years ago compared to how they will be 30 years from now. It's really crazy to think about all the amazing changes that have happened and will happen in that span of 60 years!
Let's start by talking about what life was like 30 years ago in the early 1990s. From what my parents and grandparents have told me, things were a lot different back then. They didn't have all the super cool technology we have today. Can you even imagine not having smartphones, laptops, or the internet? That just seems so weird to me!
Instead of getting information instantly from the internet, people had to look things up in huge, heavy book called
encyclopedias. And if they needed directions to get somewhere, they had to use big maps instead of GPS. No one could video chat with their friends and family or watch unlimited shows and movies whenever they wanted. There also weren't any social media apps to share photos and updates. People just had to write letters or make calls on landline phones that were attached to the wall! How boring!
Speaking of phones, they were totally brick-sized compared to our sleek smartphones now. The screens were tiny and you could only use them to make calls - no apps, games, or cameras. If you wanted to take a picture, you had to use an actual camera that used film that took forever to get developed at a store. It's crazy that we ever lived like that!
Another big difference was that you couldn't just listen to any song you wanted back then. People had to go to actual music stores and buy CD albums if they wanted to get new music. Or they'd have to record songs off the radio onto cassette tapes. It seems like such a hassle compared to now when we can just stream any song instantly.
Video games and TV shows also looked so ancient back then because the graphics and visual effects were really basic and not nearly as realistic as they are today. Everything had a super
pixelated, low-resolution look to it. Can you imagine watching your favorite shows or playing your favorite games looking like that now? No way!
The cars from 30 years ago also look so outdated and
old-fashioned. They didn't have any of the fancy safety features or cool navigation systems that cars have nowadays. Most of them just had AM/FM radios and cup holders - that's it!
Self-driving or electric cars weren't even a thought back then.
When it came to school, things were really different too. All homework had to be done with pencils, pens, and paper - not laptops or tablets. Students couldn't use the internet to do research either. They had to look things up in the library using books and encyclopedias. There were no interactive whiteboards, educational apps, or online learning portals. Just old chalkboards, textbooks, and paper handouts. School sure seems a lot more engaging and hands-on now!
As you can probably tell, life 30 years ago was definitely a lot more basic and old-school compared to today. It's really amazing to think about all of the incredible advancements and changes that have happened in such a relatively short period of time.
But you know what's even more mind-blowing? Thinking about how different things will be 30 years from now in the 2050s! Based on how much progress we've made so quickly with technology and innovation over the last few decades, who knows what incredible things will be possible 30 years in the future.
Some really smart scientists think we might have things like flying cars, virtual reality that's just as realistic as the real world, mind-reading gadgets, and even human-like robots that can think for themselves! We might be able to take vacations in outer space hotels or on other planets. Is your mind blown yet? Because my mind is totally blown!
Computers and mobile devices will probably be a billion times faster and more powerful than they are today. Instead of keyboards and touchscreens, we might control everything with just our thoughts or hand gestures using brain-computer interfaces. Hologram phone calls and 6G internet speeds could be the norm.
Medicine and healthcare might make huge breakthroughs too. We might be able to 3D print organs for transplants, regrow damaged body parts, or even become immune to all diseases with special treatments. Getting sick or having injuries might be a thing of the past if all that comes true!
Advancements in science could also lead to things like affordable renewable energy for everyone on the planet,
lab-grown meat that doesn't require animals, and maybe even teleportation! How awesome would it be to just teleport anywhere in the world in an instant instead of having to drive or fly there?
With artificial intelligence and robotics continuing to get smarter and more capable, a lot of current human jobs might be handled by machines in the future. Robots could be the builders, cooks, drivers, factory workers, and more. Most workplaces and schools will probably be really high-tech and digital too.
Of course, predicting the future is never easy and a lot could change in 30 years that we can't even imagine yet. But one thing is for sure - the world is going to keep evolving at lightning speed. The changes between 30 years ago and 30 years from now will be absolutely incredible and mind-bending. I can't wait to see what the future holds!
For now, I better get back to my homework. Thanks for reading my essay! I'll talk to you all again in 30 years to let you know if any of my predictions came true. Until next time!。
