ivy league

At Penn, graduating seniors started the custom of planting ivy at a university building each spring in 1873 and that practice was formally designated as "Ivy Day" in 1874. Ivy planting ceremonies are reported for Yale, Simmons, Bryn Mawr and many others. Princeton's "Ivy Club" was founded in 1879.
The first known instance of the term Ivy League being used appeared in The Christian Science Monitor on February 7, 1935. Several sportswriters and other journalists used the term shortly later to refer to the older colleges, those along the northeastern seaboard of the United States, chiefly the nine institutions with origins dating from the colonial era, together with the United States Military Academy (West Point), the United States Naval Academy, and a few others.

The Ivy League

The term became official after the formation of the NCAA Division athletic conference in 1954.The use of the phrase is no longer limited to athletics, and now represents an educational philosophy inherent to the nation's oldest schools. Seven of the eight schools were founded during the United States colonial period; the exception is Cornell, which was founded in 1865. Ivy League institutions account for seven of the nine Colonial Colleges chartered before the American Revolution.
History
According to a kind of theory, the original of "The Ivy League" should trace back to 1937, a new reporter named Stanley Woodward cast this word, because in the United States the most ancient old building are all covered by evergreen rattan(常青藤). Moreover, there is another early theory which is come from "Four League “.The member includes Columbia University, Harvard University , Princeton university and Yale University.

Ivy League

1、What is Ivy League?

The Ivy League, a prestigious group of elite universities in the United States, is renowned for its academic excellence and distinguished alumni. However, one aspect of the Ivy League experience that often goes unnoticed is the unique way in which its students and graduates speak the English language. Ivy League English pronunciation, often referred to as the "Ivy League accent," has become a subject of fascination and scrutiny, both within and outside the hallowed halls of these prestigious institutions. At the heart of the Ivy League accent lies a distinct set of linguistic traits that set it apart from other regional or socioeconomic variations of English. One of the most notable features is the way in which Ivy League speakers pronounce certain vowel sounds. For instance, the "a" in words like "dance" or "bath" is often pronounced with a more rounded, almost "ah" sound, rather than the more common "æ" sound. Similarly, the "o" in words like "college" or "Boston" tends to be pronounced with a more subtle, almost diphthongal quality, rather than the more straightforward "ah" sound.Another distinguishing characteristic of the Ivy League accent is the way in which certain consonant sounds are articulated. Ivy League speakers often exhibit a more precise, almost clipped, delivery of words, with a tendency to pronounce the final consonants in words more distinctly. This can be particularly noticeable in the pronunciation of words like "water," where the "t" sound is often more pronounced than in other regional dialects.Furthermore, Ivy League English is characterized by a certain cadence and rhythm that sets it apart from other varieties of the language. Ivy League speakers often exhibit a more measured, deliberate pace of speech, with a tendency to pause between phrases or clauses. This can lend an air of formality and intellectual gravitas to their speech, which is often viewed as a hallmark of the Ivy League experience.Interestingly, the origins of the Ivy League accent can be traced back to the early history of these prestigious institutions. Many of the founding members of the Ivy League were influenced by the speech patterns of the upper-class, educated elites of the northeastern United States, particularly those of the Boston and New York City regions. As the Ivy League schools solidified their reputations as bastions of academic excellence, the speech patterns of their students and alumni became increasingly associated with the prestige and exclusivity of these institutions.Over time, the Ivy League accent has become a cultural signifier, a way of identifying individuals who have been shaped by the Ivy League experience. For some, the accent is a source of pride, a badge of honor that reflects their intellectual and social standing. For others, however, the Ivy League accent can be a source of resentment, a perceived symbol of elitism and privilege that serves to distance the Ivy League community from the broader population.Regardless of one's personal feelings about the Ivy League accent, it is undeniable that it has had a significant impact on the way in which the English language is perceived and understood in the United States. The Ivy League accent has become a subject of fascination for linguists, who study it as a unique and fascinating example of language variation. It has also become a topic of discussion in popular culture, with the accent often being parodied or imitated in films, television shows, and other media. In conclusion, the Ivy League accent is a complex and multifaceted linguistic phenomenon that reflects the unique history and culture of these prestigious institutions. Whether one views it as a symbol of intellectual and social distinction or as a manifestation of elitism and exclusivity, the Ivy League accent remains a fascinating and enduring aspect of the American linguistic landscape.。

The Ive League

There are a number of stories about the origin of the name, the Ivy League . some people say it's based on four universities. The letters IV, that's the Roman numeral for four. Another people say it’s based on ivy plants, which surrounding the teaching buildings ,presenting the energy and enthusiasm are symbolic of the age of the universities.Originally the Ivy League is an athletic conference including eight private institutions of higher education in the United States. But in recent years, Ivy League schools have accepted a wider range of students because they were thought to be too socially elite. The eight insititutions are Harvard, which is the oldest, Cornell, which is the youngest and has the largest numbers of undergraduates , Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Princeton, Brown, and the University of Pennsylvania. They're among the top universities in the world for financial resources .The Ivy League institutions have a reputation for social elitism, many of the students are rich, intellectual, white Anglo-Saxon, protestants. Hundreds of them are famous alumni, the two that would be definitely known all over the world would certainly be George Bush who went to Yale, and John F Kennedy、President Kennedy, who were at Harvard.

The Ivy League athletic conference, founded in 1954, consists of eight private institutions of higher education located in the eastern United States. It was established with the core principle of admission strictly based on academic merit. The term, with its connotations of academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and a certain amount of academic elitism, dates back to at least 1935.[1]All of the Ivy League institutions share some general characteristics: They are among the most prestigious and selective schools in the U.S., they consistently place close to the top of college and university rankings; they rank within the top one percent of the world's academic institutions in terms of financial endowment; they attract top-tier students and faculty; and they have relatively small undergraduate populations, ranging between 4,078 for Dartmouth College and 13,700 for Cornell University and modestly sized graduate student populations, ranging between 1,666 for Dartmouth and 14,692 for Columbia. Seven of the eight schools (Cornell University being the exception) were founded during America's colonial period. Ivy League institutions, therefore, account for seven of the nine colleges chartered before the American Revolution. The Ivies also are all located in the Northeast region of the United States and are privately owned and controlled. Although many of them receive funding from the federal or state governments to pursue research, only Cornell has state-supported academic units, termed statutory colleges, that are an integral part of the institution.

The Ivy League

Part II The Ivy LeagueCWhen you hear the phrase “Ivy League”, what do you think of? It is rare that a person can name all eight Ivies, but it is even rarer that a person doesn’t even have any notions about them. The eight schools of the Ivy League—Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale—are among the most selective and academically rigorous institutions in the world. Each Ivy League school has its own history and personality, and each attracts brilliant and accomplished students from around the world.Cornell University (founded in 1865)Many students say, “Cornell is the easiest Ivy to get into and the hardest to get out of.” It’s the easiest to get into because it accepts so many students—although it turns away approximately five students for every one it admits. It’s the hardest to get out of because the course work is exceptionally rigorous.Cornell sits on a hilltop overlooking Cayuga Lake, the largest of the Finger Lakes of central New York state. Two sides of the campus are bound by gorges during the last 12,000 years. Creeks and waterfalls fill the gorges, and no matter where you are on campus you are never far from the sight and sound of falling water. This is an area of great natural beauty—a place that contributes to a healthy and pleasurable quality of life.Brown University (founded in 1764)It’s a big shift from Cornell. Every destination on the campus is less than seven minutes away. Students here seem to study more passionately than those at Cornell. Brown is a place for people to explore their own interests. There are no university distribution requirements, so students are free to study whatever they want.Since its move to the city of Providence (the capital of Rhode Island) in 1770, Brown University has grown even more amazing. Today, beautiful greens lie between vibrant city streets and 18th-century buildings are complemented by brand new laboratories. Most importantly, its people make it an amazing place to learn.Dartmouth College (founded in 1769)The school is isolated in New Hampshire but technologically advanced. Wireless Internet access is available all over campus and every dorm room has free long distance telephone service. All Dartmouth undergraduates own a personal computer; more than 9000 PCs are in use campus wide. Students here are friendly. They often welcome visitors into their homes, classes and parties.Columbia University (founded in 1754)Set in Manhattan, students from Columbia don’t need to bond with each other and create their own entertainment. The whole world is waiting just outside the gates and they can enjoy themselves in New York City. Indeed, New York is the big draw for the school. A person who loves city life will love it at Columbia. At Columbia, the students are exceptionally independent and mature.Yale is a great place in many ways, especially the living conditions. When students arrive on campus, they are each randomly assigned to one of 12 residential colleges. The living spaces are amazing compared to other schools. Each residence has several entryways with doors to suites on every floor. Common rooms in the suites have large windows with good views and decorative fireplaces. Each college has a basement that houses a variety of activities from rock climbing walls and pottery studios to gyms and movie theatres.Yale is rich. Of course, all of the Ivies have tremendous wealth. But at Yale, the money is more obvious. Architecturally, the school is amazing. Many of the new buildings have been designed—at great expense—to look older; the windows deliberately cracked and repaired, the roof tiles chipped by hand, the stones stained and weathered. The school’s power plant has gothic-style smokestacks. The money isn’t just used on architecture, however. It is also spent on social activities and education. Renowned speakers are frequently invited to the campus to speak to students. University of Pennsylvania (founded in 1749)Many of the students at Penn have commented on how well-dressed the campus is.It is common to find students walking across campus at noon on a Monday dressed like they are going to dinner parties rather than classes. The reason for the trend may just be the city environment. Students have access to the latest fashions, so it’s easy to stay up-to-date.Penn’s picturesque campus is situated near the heart of Philadelphia, a vital and lively city. Founded by Benjamin Franklin, Penn’s urban campus boasts many notable landmarks. Franklin Field is the oldest two-tiered stadium in the country with a seating capacity of approximately 52,000. The Penn Relays, the oldest organized relay competition in the United States (it began in 1895), is held every year in April. The Relays bring together the best track and field athletes from high schools and colleges worldwide.Harvard is one of the most recognized brands in the world. Several of the Ivies are almost unknown to the general population, but most people in the U.S. know about Harvard. Harvard University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. The campus is home to many superior examples of American architecture. The oldest standing Harvard building—Massachusetts Hall—was built in 1720. Harvard University is an ideal place not only for studying but also sightseeing since it’s such a large place.Princeton University (founded in 1746)Princeton is a beautiful place. The buildings are interesting and the lawns sprawling. The chapel is one of the best in the Ivy League. Nassau Hall is a landmark worth visiting and the dorms on West campus make dorm life look pleasant. Princeton’s graduation ceremony is by ticket only. On graduation day, family and friends from around the world sit in relentless sunshine and soothing shade on the front campus.。
