Unit 1Writing for MyselfRussell Baker 1 The idea of becoming a writer had come to me off and on since my childhood in Belleville, but it wasn't until my third year in high school that the possibility took hold. Until then I've been bored by everything associated with English courses. I found English grammar dull and difficult. I hated the assignments to turn out long, lifeless paragraphs that were agony for teachers to read and for me to write.
2 When our class was assigned to Mr. Fleagle for third-year English I anticipated another cheerless year in that most tedious of subjects. Mr. Fleagle had a reputation among students for dullness and inability to inspire. He was said to be very formal, rigid and hopelessly out of date. To me he looked to be sixty or seventy and excessively prim.He wore primly severe eyeglasses, his wavy hair was primly cut and primly combed. He wore prim suits with neckties set primly against the collar buttons of his white shirts. He had a primly pointed jaw, a primly straight nose, and a prim manner of speaking that was so correct, so gentlemanly, that he seemed a comic antique.

Jean Claudine Villaneuva, a 29-year-old student at Middlesbrough College in northeastern England, became the first Wokstar winner. For over 20 years, Villaneuva had specialized in British and French cuisine(烹饪)before his love turned to Chinese cooking.“Wokstar is a fantastic new competition aimed at students across the UK. Our role here at Lu Ban is to talk about Chinese cuisine, Chinese culture, and introduce it to the rest of the UK. We thought, what better way to do that is to run a specifically Chinese cooking competition,” said Lu Ban’s head chef Dave Critchley. “We have had colleges from all over the country competing, and really, it’s about showcasing how fantastic Chinese cuisine is.”Critchley said that in its founding year, the competition involved over 60 students. “I must say that the quality we’ve seen so far has been pleasantly surprising. I think it’s the enthusiasm and the love for Chinese food that is really inspiring. It’s great to see people getting really involved in this and really celebrating not just the food of China, but also the culture around it. And what we looked for in our finalists and our winner was actually someone who does understand the importance of Chinese cuisine.”Critchley’s interest in Chinese cuisine started when he worked in Asian restaurants in Manchester before becoming head chef at Lu Ban.“I was flown over to Tianjin in northern China, where I worked with some amazing chefs. If the plan is passed, New Zealand will become the first country to tax(征税)farmers on each burp of their cattle, since the burps give out methane(甲烷)into the atmosphere. “There is no question that we need to cut the amount of methane we are putting into the atmosphere, and an effective emissions pricing system for agriculture will play a key part in how we achieve that,” Climate Change Minister James Shaw sai d.Animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of global warming. It is reportedly responsible for at least 14.5% of the world’s emissions. Moreover, cows are by far the biggest contributors. This is so because they produce 40% of global methane when they burp, fart(放屁)and produce waste. Also, methane is 80 times more warming than CO2although it’s shorter-lived in the atmosphere.New Zealand, which has a population of five million people, has around 10 million cattle and 26 million sheep. “Almost half the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture, mainly methane,” the draft plan explained. The “burp tax” is expected to take effect in 2025. Mr. Shaw wants farming to be more environmentally friendly. He also wants farmers to change the way they farm. He wants them tofeed their animals on seaweed instead of grass. This will produce fewer emissions. Mr. Shaw also said farmers can reduce the tax they pay by planting more trees. Another suggestion is for cows to wear special masks.Ne w Zealand’s farmers support the government. They want to do their bit to help the environment.8. Why will cattle’s burps be taxed?A.To raise more money. B.To feed more cattle.C.To limit cattle’s price.D.To better the environment.9. Which is a fact about New Zealand according to the text?A.Its cows produce 40% of global methane.B.Its agriculture affects greenhouse gas emissions.C.It is responsible for at least 14.5% of the world’s emissions.D.There is 80 times more methane than CO 2 .10. What can farmers do to pay less tax according to Mr. Shaw?A.Plant more trees. B.Correct their way to farm.C.Feed their animals on grass. D.Wear special masks when farming.11. Which can be the best title of the text?A.New Zealand reducing greenhouse gas emissionsB.New Zealand’s greenhouse emissions and animal farmingC.New Zealand introducing a new tax to help the environmentD.New Zealand’s farmers joining in the fight against climate changeCounting stars is pretty difficult in areas with lots of light, like major cities. A study says even in the clearest skies, you’re still seeing turbulence(涡流)in the atmosphere that makes stars twinkle. Want a truly perfect view of outer space? An internati onal research team has found the spot, but you’ll need to wrap up warm. It’s in Antarctica!According to the University of New South Wales, turbulence causes light coming from stars to bend as it reaches the Earth’s surface. That instability(不稳定)in the air makes stars twinkle. The location in Antarctica, however, has so little turbulence that it hardly interferes(干扰)with the light from stars, making the view extraordinarily clear. The Chinese-led research team built a system of telescopes on the top of a plateau(高原), named Dome A, which sits 4,000 feet above sea level.“Dome A is the highest point in the central plateau of Antarctica, and the atmosphere is extremely stable here, much more so than anywhere else on Earth,” says UNSW Professor Michael Ashley. “The result is that the twinkling of the stars is greatly reduced, and the star images are much sharperand brighter. In fact, this special place even has advantages over the famous Hubble Space Telescope.”“Satellites are a lot more expensive,” the astronomer explains. “But another advantage of making Earth-based observations is that you can always add the latest technology to your telescope on the ground. In space, everything is delayed(延迟). So you end up with technology in space lagging that on the gro und by 10 years or more.”One of the biggest advantages Dome A’s location has is that winter nights in Antarctica are very long. In fact, scientists will be able to track stars continuously since some nights in midwinter last for almost 24 hours.12. Why is the view of stars extraordinarily clear in Antarctica?A.Because stars appear bigger there.B.Because turbulence hardly exists there.C.Because there is little air pollution there.D.Because more light coming from stars arrives there.13. What does t he underlined word “lagging” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?A.Based on. B.Linked to.C.Competing with. D.Falling behind.14. What makes Dome A specially great for astronomical observations?A.It sits 4,000 feet above sea level.B.It has very long winter nights there.C.The famous Hubble Space Telescope is there.D.Telescopes there are equipped with the latest technology.15. In which section of the website are you likely to read the text?A.Business. B.Environment.C.Science. D.Tourism.With more people concerned about the environment, you can expect to see many more electric vehicles(EVs 电动汽车)on the road in future. 16 Drivers say there are a few things to get used to when switching to a vehicle powered by electricity. First of all, the re’s no clutch(离合器). Instead, drivers use a simple selector to put EVs in park, drive, and reverse.Since they’re powered by electricity, EVs also apply full power as soon as the driver hits the accelerator(加速器). 17 Also, EVs slow down as soon as the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator. Drivers end up using their brakes much less.18 The most obvious is that EVs don’t rely on gas. This means drivers of electric cars don’t need to stop at the gas station—in the long run, this can save a great deal of money. EVs are also low maintenance(维护). For example, they don’t need oil changes. 19 This is likely because of the placement of the battery, which sits just below the seats. This helps keep the vehicle’s center of gravity low.Of course, there are also disadvantages. Most EVs can drive over 200 miles on one full charge. 20 With limited charging stations in many areas, this could cause problems on long trips. Additionally, the batteries are expensive to replace. Finally, while EVs may save driv ers’ money on gas and maintenance in the long run, the price of buying an EV is often higher than that of a gas-powered vehicle.37-year-old Kyle Semrau wasn’t feeling well when he arrived home on Monday morning after his night job. 东城区九年级上语文期末2024作文
东城区九年级上语文期末2024作文I remember the day I received the topic for our final Chinese essay in ninth grade. It was a mixture of excitement and nervousness that filled the air as we all sat down to brainstorm ideas.
As I pondered the different perspectives I could take on the topic, I realized that there were so many ways to approach it. Each viewpoint offered a unique insight into the theme and allowed for a deeper exploration of the subject matter.
One perspective that stood out to me was the idea of tradition and culture in Chinese society. The rich history and heritage of our country have shaped who we are today, and it's important to preserve and honor these traditions.
Smoking cigarettes is hazardous to your health.
Exercise is good for you. (too general)Aerobic exercise is good for your health. (suitable)Driving a car can be hazardous. (too general)Drunk driving is hazardous.
Exercise:Choose one of the following topics and brainstorm the topic. After writing everything that comes to your mind on the topic, sort through the list and choose an idea that interests you. Write a topic sentence that has a controlling idea. If necessary, narrow down the topic further. A final examination in a course will give a student the initiative to do his orher best work throughout the course. Students who are only taking notes and attending classes in order to pass a few short tests will not put forth their best effort. For instance, some of my friends in drama, in which there is no final examination, take poor notes, which they throw away after each short test. Skipping classes also becomes popular. Imagine the incredible change a final examination would produce. Students would have to take good notes and attend all classes in order to be prepared for the final examination.--- Suzanne Gremillion 这段落的中心思想说明:“ The advantages of the final examination”。
