Some people think that water ices and milk ices may have been made by the Chinese between three thousand and a thousand years ago. In that time, the dish reached India. The Indians, in turn, many have passed on the secret to the Arabs and Persians.Marco Polo, an Italian who travelled widely in the thirteenth century, noted that he found the Chinese had long been making ices out of fruit juices and milk. From the fourteenth century on, ices became popular first in Venice and then throughout Italy. In 1535, when Catherine de Medeicis left Italy to marry the future King Herry II of France, she took her cooks with her. They made desserts the French had never tasted before, which was ice cream. At first ice cream was a luxury in France. Only rich people had the money to buy it. Then, in 1660, a young man from Sicily, Francisco Procopio, arrived in Paris. He opened a shop that sold ice cream at prices people could afford. Over the course of three experiments on 35 young and healthy volunteers, researchers in a new study measured brain activity during two continuous nights of sleep.Sasaki and colleagues performed a series of lab tests by stimulating the left and then the right hemisphere(大脑的半球)with sounds. On the second night, there wasn’t any difference in reactions to tests between the left and right hemispheres, even during deep sleep. This suggests that there is a first-night-only effect specifically in one hemisphere of the brain during deep sleep, the authors conclude. The way participants responded to the sleep lab tests points to the potential for the brain to be on high alert for danger during the first night in unfamiliar surroundings. While this may be bad news for business travelers who regularly make brief overnight trips, it may not be as troublesome for people who go away for longer periods of time, Sasaki added by email. “Frequent travel may lead to unrestful sleep,” Sasaki said. “But if you stay for a few days at the same place, your sleep might catch up.”Some birds have been found to actually sleep with one eye open and one side of the brain awa ke when they’re in a dangerous setting, and some marine mammals have similar abilities, the authors note. But the new study focuses on healthy volunteers but not people with insomnia or other sleep disorders, the authors note.“The clinical implications haven’t been confirmed at the moment,” Finan, a psychiatry (精神医学)and behavioral health researcher said. “However, the level of specificity provided by these analyses could be an important first stepin understanding what sleep disorders like insomnia(失眠) arise from, which is thought to be driven in many patients by continuing having a lot of worries.”13.What do the underlined words “may not be too far off the mark” in Paragraph 1 mean?A. may make senseB. may be ridiculous.C. may cause argumentsD. may be disturbing.14.What can we know from Paragraph 2?A. Even if you know the meaning of each word you see or hear, you may not understand the idiom because you don't understand the culture behind it.For example, if an American boy asks his mother what's for dinner tomorrow, she may say "I'll play it by ear", that means she doesn't have plans for dinner and she will decide later. If you learn to use them, your English will be more vivid and colorful. English idioms are more mon in spoken English. They can be difficult to remember sometimes. Next time when you hear somebody saying to you, "Give me a hand", you don't necessarily stretch out your hand to him/her, but you do need to be helpful. She doesn't have plans for dinner and will decide later13. When one says "Can you give me a hand?", he means _______.A. he needs to hold your hand.B. he works well with youC. he needs your helpD. he is a new er and can't help with the situation14. It’s here, it’s growing and it’s having an influence on our life. Surf the Internet and you’ll find blogs everywhere. A blog, shortened from “weblog”, is a public Internet journal written by one perso n or a group of people. It is a website in which a person or a group can place news, personal thoughts, text, photos, video or audio files, or links upon which visitors can ment. A blog lets you post on the Internet without having to know web design or be technical. You are given an environment to make dated entries on the topic of your choice which are “published”, so other people can read them.Authoring a blog, maintaining a blog or adding an article to an existing blog is called “blogging”. Blogging has revolutioniz ed Internet publishing in the last several years because it gives everyone with Internet access the opportunity to bee an online writer. Objects, such as “text and photos” in a blog can be called “blog posts”, “posts”, or “entries”. The person who posts these entries is called a “blogger”.Now, somewhere around the world, a blog is created almost every 6 seconds. Because it’s great potential, Bill Gates views it as important as e-mail, BBS, and MSN. He’s trying to make blogs the important tools for future business munications.56. Many people believe that when specific muscles are exercised, the fatty tissues (组织) in the immediate area are burned up. The truth is that exercise burns fat from all over the body and not from one specific area. Of course, if you reduce the fat throughout your body, you will certainly see results around your waist too. Some people believe that you need to exercise twice a week in order to keep a sufficient level of physical fitness. However, studies directed by American scientists show that unexercised muscles lose their strength very quickly. Within 48 to 72 hours, you must use the muscles again to reestablish (重建) the good physical effects. And what does that mean to you? American scientists concluded that while daily exercise is most helpful, exercising every other day or three days a week will keep a sufficient level of physical fitness. Is it true that you burn more calories running one mile than walking the same distance? The answer is no. The truth is that you use the same amount of energy whether you walk or run the mile, since in both cases you are moving the same weight the same distance. The speed does not matter. Of course, if you run rather than walk for 30 minutes, you will cover more distance, and therefore burn more calories. If your breathing doesn’t return to normal within 5 minutes after you finish exercising, you have exercised too much. Five mi nutes or so after exercising, your breathing should be normal, your h eart shouldn’t be beating loudly, and you shouldn’t be tired.61. If you want to reduce the fat around your waist, you should ____.A. do stomach exerciseB. exercise the waistC. exercise all the muscles of your bodyD. run fast for 30 minutes62.. From the second paragraph, we learn that ____.A. we only need to exercise twice a weekB. we should exercise three times a weekC. muscles lose their strength after 48 hoursD. we should exercise every other day, or three days a week63.. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that _________ .A. you will lose more weight running one hour than walking one hourB. whether you run one mile or walk the same distance, you use the same amount of energyC. you will lose more weight running one mile than walking the same distanceD. both A and B64.. If you have exercised too much, _______.A. your breathing will take longer than 5 minutes to return to normal after you finish exercisingB. your breathing will return to normal within 5 minutes after finishing exercisingC. your heart will not be beating loudlyD. you will be too tired to move65. This passage tells us that _________.A. it is better to do more running than walkingB. the more exercise you do, the healthier you will beC. the unexercised muscles must be used again within 48 to 72 hoursD. in order to lose weight, you have to run fast(C)We have all experienced days when everything goes wrong. A day may begin well enough, but suddenly everything seems to get out of control. Sometimes a single unimportant event may cause a number of things to happen. Let us suppose that you are preparing a meal and keeping an eye on the baby at the same time. The telephone rings and this causes your troubles to begin. While you are on the phone, the baby pulls the tablecloth off the table, destroying your half-prepared meal. You hang up hurriedly and attend to your baby. Meanwhile, the meal gets burnt. As if this is not enough to bring you to tears, your husband arrives home, unexpectedly bringing three guests to dinner.Things can also go wrong on the road. During rush hour one evening two cars collided and the drivers began to argue. The woman driver behind the two cars happened to be a learner. She got into a panic and stopped her car. This forced the driver following her to stop suddenly. This driver’s wife was sitting beside him holding a large cake, and as she was thrown forward, the cake went right through the window and landed on the road. A truck driver seeing a cake flying through the air slammed on the brakes. The truck was carrying empty beer bottles and hundreds of them slid off the back of the truck onto the road, causing a terrible traffic jam. It took the police an hour to get the traffic on the move again. In the meantime, the truck driver had to sweep up hundreds of broken bottles. Only two dogs were enjoying themselves, for they were happily having what was left of the cake.66. If you want to answer the phone with out any trouble, you’d better ___________ .A. pull out the telephone line when you are with your babyB. put your baby on the bed and keep an eye on him / herC. not hurry to answer the phoneD. make sure your baby is not near the table67. Who is responsible for the accidents that happened on the road?A. The two drivers who were arguing.B. It wasn’t mentioned in the passage.C. The woman driver.D. The truck driver.68. From this story we learn that ________.A. there are many road accidents every dayB. the accidents mentioned in the passage are very strangeC. no one knows why this kind of accident happensD. the accidents menereherhtioned in the passage are very mon69. Sunstroke (中暑) is a condition that can quickly go from dangerous to deadly, especially if proper care isn’t given immediately.Sunstroke, sometimes called heatstroke, is a result of the body temperature rising above safe limits. This causes the body’s necessary functions to stop working. It’s usually pretty easy to avoid sunstroke, as long as proper action is taken. In that case, you need to act as quickly as possible to return that person’s body to a safe temperature. Here are a few tips to help treat sunstroke.Call for helpCall to get an ambulance as quickly as possible. This should be the first thing you do, especially if the sunstroke person has fainted(昏倒). Also, call for help from anyone nearby if you’ re in a public place. If there’s no one around, call someone nearby if they can get there sooner than an ambulance. Ask everyone to bring you as much water as possible, if there isn’t much n earby.Get the person to a cooler areaIf there’s a building nearby, aim for that. Anywhere with plenty of air conditionings and water is perfect. If a building isn’t available, bring the person to a well shaded area.Get the water flowingIf the person is still conscious, get him or her to drink water. If there’s a bathtub available, fill it with cool water and put the person in it.If your water supply is limited, you have to save it. Dampen a towel or shirt and put it on the person’s body. Focus on the face, neck, and chest.Fan the personGetting moving air over the person cools him or her down. Use anything, a towel or sheet, a shirt your hands,or a piece of board. This is where having many people around really helps, as they can bine to fan the entire body.1. When does a person get sunstroke?A. When the body temperature goes up beyond what one can bear.B. Usually you don’t know who is phoning or how urgent their business is, so a ringing phone is difficult to ignore. In one experiment, a researcher wrote down the numbers of several public phones in stations and airports. Then he called the numbers. Someone nearly always answered. When he asked why, people usually said, “Because it rang.”A few years ago in New Jersey, a man with a rifle killed 13 people. Armed police surrounded his house but he refused to e out. A reporter found out the phone number of the house and called. The man put down his rifle and answered the phone. “What do you want?” he said, “I’m really busy right now.”Imagine you’re at work and the phone is ringing in someone else’s office. Do you answer it or not? In one survey on telephone use, 51% of participants told researches that they did. We can’t ignore the phone and for the reason, it forces its way into our lives. It interrupts what we are doing and on top of that, the caller is often someone we don’t really want to talk to. However, in the survey, 58% said they never took the phone off the hook, and 67% didn’t mind if someone called during a television programme. For 44% it wasn’t a problem if someone rang duri ng a meal, while only 28% were annoyed or upset. If someone phoned in the middle of the night, 40% told researchers that they got nervous or frightened, while around 30% got angry.Of course, when someone is really annoying, you can choose to hang up on him/her. This is in fact one of the rudest things you can do on the phone, but 79% said they were prepared to do it in some cases. Only 6% told researchers they never hung up on people.8. In the experiment, people answered the researcher’s phone ________.A. in order to help him gather the dataB. to test the function of the phoneC. for fear that it was urgentD. to show their interest in the survey9. The gunman answered the phone because ________.A. he decided not to give up his resistance to the policeB. he tended to answer a ringing phoneC. he wanted to tell the reporter that he was too busy to offer any informationD. he intended to be friendly with the media10. What is implied by the sentence “79% said they were prepared to do it in some cases”?A. They were prepared to punish those rude callers.B. They also agreed to hang up on others regardless of rudeness.C. They were annoying rude callers.D. They were going to hang on annoying phones.11. The purpose of the survey is to find out _______.A. how the phone interrupts people’s workB. what role the phone plays in people’s livesC. when the phone munication is more weleD. why people mind a ringing phone sometimesDEaster (复活节) is still a great day for worship (崇拜), randy in baskets and running around the yard finding eggs, but every year it gets quite a bit worse for bunnies (兔子).And no, not because the kids like to pull their ears. The culprit is climate change, and some researchers found that rising temperatures arc having harmful effects on at least five species of rabbit in the US.Take the Lower Keys March rabbit, for instance. An endangered species that lives in the Lower Florida Keys, this species of cottontail is a great swimmer—it lives on the islands!—but it is already severely affected by development and now by rising levels. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, an ocean level rise of only 0.6 meters will send these guys jumping to higher ground and a 0.9-meter rise would wipe out their habitat (栖息地) pletely. The snowshoe hare, on the other hand, has a color issue. Most of these rabbits change their fur color from white in the wintertime to brown in the summer, each designed to give them better cover from predators (捕食者). As the number of days with snow decreases all across the country, however, more and more bunnies arc being left in white fur during brown dirt days of both fall and spring, making them an easier mark for predators. Researchers know that the color change is controlled by the number of hours of sunlight, but whether the rabbit will be able to adapt quick enough to survive is a big question. The National Wildlife Federation has reported that hunters have noticed their numbers are already markedly down.American pikas or rock rabbits, a relative of rabbits and hares, might be the firs’ of these species to go extinct due to climate change. About 7-8 inches long, pikas live high in the cool, damp mountains west of the Rocky Mountains. As global temperatures rise, they would naturally migrate (迁徙) to higher ground - but they already occupy (占据) the mountaintops. They can’t go any higher. The National Wildlife Federation reports that they might not be able to stand the new temperatures as their habitat beats up.The volcano rabbit has the same problem. These rabbits live on the slopes of volcanoes in Mexico, and recent studies have shown that the lower range of their habitat has already shifted upward about 700 meters, but there are not suitable plants for them to move higher, so they are stuck in the middle. Scientists are concerned about their populations.Native to the US, pygmy rabbits weigh less than 1 pound and live in the AmericanWest. They are believed to be the smallest rabbits in the world. Their habitats have been destroyed by development. Several populations, such as the Columbia Basin pygmy, almost went extinct and were saved by zoo breeding programs. Pygmy rabbits also rely on winter cover by digging tunnels through the snow to escape predators, but lesser snowfall is leaving them exposed. All of this gives new meaning to dressing up in a giant bunny costume (服装) this Easter.12. The problem faced by volcano rabbets and rock rabbits is that ________.A. neither can migrate to higher placesB. both are affected by rising sea levelsC. neither can find enough foodD. both are affected by less snow15 Which best describes the writer’s tone in the postage?A. AFor many years, Bruce Bexler dreamed of going to the lands no human had explored and discovering rare, unknown species. That might sound like animpossible dream, but Bexler turnedit into a reality. In December 2015, he, together with a team of Australian and American scientists, adventured into a rain forest on the island of New Guinea. They were the first people ever to enter the region. "As we were dropped on the ground by helicopter, we found no trails anywhere; it was really hard to get around," Bexler says.Within minutes of landing, the team spotted a black chicken-like bird. The scientists soon determined that the creature was a type of honeyeater-thefirst new bird species to be sighted on New Guinea in 60years. The honeyeater wasn't the only surprise for them. They discovered more than 40previously unknown plant and animal species. "We were like kids in a candy store," Bexler recalls. "Everywhere we looked, we saw amazing things we had never seen before."The newfound species didn't shy away from the scientists. Two long-nosed echidnas even let the visitors pick them up and take them back to camp to study them. Bexler thinks the animals weren't scared because they had never seen humans before. He explains, "This area gives scientists a place where they can study the behaviours of animals that have not yet learned to be afraid of people."Bexler and his team did not have enough time to study the area completely. "We just scratched the surface," Bexler says. "Anyone who goes there will come back with a mystery."21. Which word can best describe Bruce Bexler?A. Adventurous. B. Cautious. C. Optimistic. D. She understood it very well. But to the students how to solvea very difficult problem. She understood it very well. But somehow,at that moment, she could not explain it. Emma said, "I must be losing it."Americans seem to have a lot of concerns about losing it. At least that is what you would think from hearing them talk. They use the expression when they feel they are losing control. It can mean losing emotionalcontrol, or losing the ability to do something, or losing mental powers.Word experts differabout how the expression started. Some believe it came from television programs popular in the 1980s. Others believe it began with psychologists who deal with how people think, feel and act."We Americans have many concerns about controlling oar lives. Perhaps we worry to much." one psychologists said. "In many situations, to say you are losing it eases the tensions(不安)." It is healthy. And most people who say they are having a problem are not losing it.People may feel more like they are losing it when they are "down in the dumps." Word expert Charles Funk says people have been feeling down in the dumps for more than 400 years. The word dumps probably comes from Northern European countries. The languages of Denmark and Norway both have similar words. The words mean falling suddenly. Americans borrowed this saying. And, over the years, it has become a popular way of expressing sadness.29. What problem did Mary think she had?A. She had quite low intelligence.B. She seemed to have a poor memory.C. That's because the cheap and long-lived material is found in almost every daily necessity. Now, an Indonesian-based company has come up with a delicious solution.David Christian, the co-founder of Evoware, says after investigating various materials, the company settled on seaweed. Unlike corn, commonly used for containers, seaweed does not require water, fertilizers, or large amounts of space. According to Evoware, as much as 40 tons of seaweed can be grown in an area the size of a baseball field. Since Indonesian farmers harvest more seaweed than they can sell, it's easy to find the material. The seaweed packaging is safe to consume and can entirely dissolve(溶解)in hot water. While the eatable wrappers(包装纸)may not have any taste,Dubbed Ello Jello, the single-use cups invented by Evoware, are available in four tastes-orange, lychee, peppermint, and green tea. The best part? You can order the powder and make them at home! Though currently they cannot stand hot liquids, Evoware is working on making heat-resistant(耐热的)cups as well. While the seaweed products seem like a perfect replacement, it's a hard-sell in Indonesia. According to Christian, "The awareness and sense of urgency to minimize the use of single-use plastic is still very low. This makes our bioplastic seem unnecessary." Also a factor is the cost, which is higher than using plastic. However, Evoware believes they can reduce the price once the company moves to mass production. Hopefully, Evoware will succeed in convincing people worldwide that switching to their products will go a long way in protecting our beautiful planet.32. How does seaweed differ from corn?A. Plastic containersC. Heat-resistant cups.D. Eatable packaging.35. What can we infer from Christian's words in the last paragraph?A. The price of plastics will go down.B. Indonesians care little about the planet.C. It takes much effort to promote the new product.D. The seaweed products need much improvement.第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10 分) [根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
