Presently I got up and dressed, stuck my violin under my jacket, and went out into the streets to try my luck. It was now or never. I must face it now, or pack up and go back home. I wandered about for an hour looking for a likely spot, feeling as though I were about to commit a crime. Then I stopped at last under a bridge near the station and decided to have a go.
I felt tense and shaky. It was the first time, after all. I drew the violin from my coat like a gun. It was here, in Southampton, with trains rattling overhead, that I was about to declare myself. One moment I was part of the hurrying crowds, the next I stood nakedly apart, my back to the wall, my hat on the pavement before me, the violin under my chin.
The first notes I played were loud and raw, like a hoarse declaration of protest, then they settled down and began to run more smoothly and to stay more or less in tune. To my surprise, I was neither arrested nor told to shut up. Indeed, nobody took any notice at all. Then an old man, without stopping, quietly dropped a penny into my hat as though to get rid of some guilty evidence.
Other pennies followed, slowly but steadily, dropped by shadows who appeared not to see or hear me. It was as though the note of the violin touched some tender nerve that had to be answered like a baby’s cry. When I’d finished the first tune there was a penny in my hat; it seemed too easy, like a confidence trick. But I was elated (情绪高昂的) now; I felt whenever I went from here this was a trick I could always live by.

Reported from foreign media, an American marine was reported having addictive syndrome to Google Project Glass due to long-time wearing. He wears the glass for over 18 hours every day and when it’s been taken away, he becomes more anxious and cranky. He’s the first Google Glass addiction case so far, according to the doctors.
As reported, this American marine uses the glass for about 2 months and wears it for 18 hours a day, taking off only when sleeping or taking a bath. But according to the medical research staff, the blame should not rest on the glass itself.
According to a research report of the American journal, Addicted Behavior, after being taken away of the glass, the patient was often seen tapping his temple using his right forefinger unconsciously, which is the act to open the screen of the glass to surf the internet. And he also told the medical staff that he often dreams himself seeing through a small grey window, as if he still wears the glass. When the glass was taken away, he became more anxious and easy to argue with people.
The report commented that he has formed dependence on the glass and when it’s taken away, he becomes less confident and is eager to get it back, just like the addicted patient wanting his addictive object.
After 35 days of treatment, he becomes less irritated and his tapping behavior becomes less and his thinking and short-time memory improves.
That’s to say, the addiction to Google Glass is no less greater than addicting to drugs, both equally frightening.

There are only 12 shopping days until Christmas, and the British public is going
present-shopping crazy. But some parents might have left it too late to buy the present their child really wants for Christmas.
Every year there seems to be a certain popularity which sweeps across Britain, whether through clever marketing or peer pressure (同龄人压力), so that practically every child in the country wants the same thing for Christmas.
Of course, with thousands of parents trying to make their child’s Christmas, it’s quite easy for the most popular presents to get sold out before everyone can buy one. This leads to parents going to extraordinary lengths to find the desired gift.
In past years, the most favored toys have included Tracy Island, from the “Thunderbirds” TV series, and Buzz Lightyear, from the “Toy Story” film. This year’s must-have present is the Nintendo Wii, an indication that British children are becoming more and more technologically savvy (有见识的).
Other presents which are expected to top Christmas wish-lists this year are several toys related to TV programs, such as popular science-fiction series “Doctor Who”, and pre-school sense “In the Night Garden”, as well as the main character from the “Transformers” movie.
As parents search shops and online stores for the gifts their children want, some people are cashing in. Those who predicted the trends bought some of the top presents earlier in the year, and can now sell them for great profits online.
Special stock-check websites have been set up to warn parents as soon as a certain item becomes available anywhere. But with so many people signed up it’ll still be a race against time to buy the toys before they sell out again.
Some children will be disappointed on Christmas morning, but let’s hope that the chocolates, Christmas dinner and the many other presents will make up for it.
33. Why some parents might have left it too late to buy the present their child really wants
for Christmas?
A. They didn’t care about the presents for their children.
B. They didn’t know what to buy for their children.
C. They cou ldn’t buy the desired present because they ran out quickly.
D. They found the desired present was too expensive to afford.
34. Which favored toy is not mentioned in the passage?
A. Nintendo Wii
B. Buzz Lightyear
C. Tracy Island
D. Thunderbirds
35. If the children got disappointed towards their Christmas, what should the parents do?
A. Replace the present with children’s favorite toy.
B. Comfort the children in other ways such as the chocolates, the Christmas dinner.
C. Explain the reason why they didn’t get the desired present.
D. Ignore their children’s feeling.

Text 10
In present China, especially in cities, most of the younger parents have sent their children to various kinds of after-class courses, such as painting, dancing, piano playing etc. They think it will help their children a lot in their future life.
Some other parents are opposed to their children taking part in such courses. They think
children are children just because they are in a stage of playing freely. These colorful after-class courses are nothing but a burden for them. Adults shouldn’t place additional burden on them, otherwise, their growing will be affected both mentally and physically.
I agree with the former view. Society in the future will need able persons of high quality. But those parents sh ould remember two points according to me: don’t force your child to do what he or she has no interest in; don’t let your child “eat” too much that he or she is not able to digest.

One possible version:
Recently, much of Northern China has been blanketed in thick smog. People are forced to wear the mask to avoid breathing poisonous air. There is no doubt that the increase of cars in the city plays an important role. The cars send off a lot of poisonous gases, which in turn adds to the already serious air pollution. Besides, industrial fuel burning and manufacturing operations contribute to this phenomenon.
In my opinion, some effective measures should be taken to handle this problem. On the one hand, government should pass strict laws to control the industrial pollution. On the other hand, every one, if possible, is supposed to take public transport instead of driving their own cars. Only in this way can we expect to have more sunny days.。
