Our plan was to drive into Cambridge, catch the 7:34 train to Liverpool Street Station, then to separate and meet again for lunch. We should have arrived at Liverpool at 9:19, but due to a typical London fog, the train had to move along so slowly that it was not until 10:30 that it got there. In spite of our late arrival, Joan, my wife’s sister, decided that she would go to see the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London while we went shopping. It was only after her sister had disappeared into the fog that my wife realized that we hadn’t decided where we should meet for lunch. Since I had our three tickets for the concert in my pocket, this was indeed a problem. There seemed to be nothing we could do except taking a taxi to the Tower of London, and try to find her there. Needless to say, we didn’t find her.
It was now one o’clock, and the concert began at 2:30. “Perhaps she will think of waiting outside the concert hall,” sugg ested my wife hopefully. By this time the fog was so thick that road traffic had to stop, and the only way to get there was by underground railway. Hand in hand we felt our way along the road to where we thought the nearest station should be. An hour later we were still trying to find it. Just as I was about to lose my temper completely when we met a blind man tapping his way confidently through the fog. With his help we found Tower Hill tube station just fifty yards down the road.
By now it was far too late even to try to get to the concert hall before the performance began at 2:30, so we decided to return to Cambridge. It took seven long hours instead of the usual two to make that journey. Nor were we able to get any food and drink on the train. Tired and hungry we finally reached home at ten, opening the door to the sound of the telephone bell. It was Joan; she had seen the Crown Jewels, had managed to get another ticket for concert, and had had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant near the hotel where she decided to stay for the night. Now she was ringing to discover whether we had had an equally successful day.

About 1 in 15 households drink bottled water today, spending about $ 4 billion a year on it.
Although the reasons for the trend are many, bottled water's health benefits fall near the top of the list. Surveys have found that about 25 percent of bottled water drinkers choose the beverage for health and safety reasons; another quarter believe it is pure and free of contaminants(杂质).
Regardless of its pristine image, bottled water is not necessarily any purer or more healthful than what flows right out of the tap. Consider that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the bottled water industry watchdog, does not require that bottled water meet higher standards for quality, such as the maximum level of contaminants, than public water supplies regulated by the EPA. For the most part, the FDA simply follows EPA's regulatory lead. Granted, bottled water is often filtered(过滤) to remove chemicals such as chlorine that may impart a certain taste. But that doesn't make it any safer. In fact, about 25 to 40 percent of bottled water comes from the same municipal water supplies as tap water. Furthermore, some bottled waters do not contain any or enough of the fluoride(氟化物) needed to fight cavities. The only way to determine whether a certain water contains the mineral is to check with the company that bottles it.
This is not to say that bottled water is necessarily any better or worse, from a health standpoint, than tap water. It's certainly preferable to tap water for those who like its taste. The problem is that many consumers pay 300 to 1,200 times more per gallon for bottled water than for tap water because they think bottled water is the more healthful of the two. Bottlers add to the confusion by sprinkling terms such as "pure", "crystal pure" and "premium" on labels illustrated with pictures of glaciers, mountain streams, and waterfalls, even when the water inside comes from a public reservoir. However, the FDA has set forth regulations requiring clear labeling of bottled waters. The mini-glossary of bottled waters explains what some of the terms used on bottles really mean.
68. What conclusion can we draw from the passage?
A. Most bottled water drinkers buy it for the taste.
B. Labels on bottled water are used to mislead consumers.
C. The FDA sets high standards for bottled water.
D. Only wealthy people can afford bottled water.
69. What does the underlined word "pristine" in the second paragraph mean?
A. beautiful.
B. pure.
C. popular.
D. inexpensive.
70. According to the passage, removing chlorine from water________
A. does not make the water safer
B. is required by the FDA
C. makes the water less expensive
D. is necessary for good health
71. According to the passage, one reason for drinking bottled water is the ________
A. convenience
B. cost.
C. minerals
D. taste
72. What's the main idea of this passage?
A. Bottled water may be preferable to tap water in taste.
B. Bottled water is always safer to drink than tap water.
C. Consumers should consider carefully the reason for buying bottled water.
D. The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for the bottled water.

Scars
Some years ago, on a hot summer day in south Florida, a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator (美洲鳄) was swimming toward the shore.
His father working in the yard saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In utter fear, he ran toward the water, yelling to his son as loudly as he could.
Hearing his voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U – turn to swim to his father. It was too late. Just as he reached his father, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the father grabbed his little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched his legs. That began an incredible tug – of – war (拔河) between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the father, but the father was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, took aim and shot the alligator.
Remarkably, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the vicious attack of the animal. And, on his arms, were deep scratches where his father’s fingernails dug into his fresh in his effort to hang on to the son he loved.
The newspaper reporter who interviewed the boy asked if he would show his scars. The boy lifted his pant legs. And then, he said to the reporter, “But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my dad wouldn’t let go.”
You and I can identify with that boy. We have scars, too. No, not from an alligator, but the scars of a painful past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret. But, some wounds, my friend, are because someone has refused to let go. In the midst of your struggle, someone has been there holding on to you.
If you have the scars of someone’s love on your arms, be very, very grateful. Someone in your life did not and will not ever let you go.
Never judge another person’s scars, because you don’t know how they got them.
73. Which of the following is the most closely related to the underlined word “passionate”?
A. determined
B. anxious
C. frightened
D. courageous
74. When the boy told the newspaper reporter about the scars on his arms, he felt .
A. painful and fearful
B. regretful and panic
C. proud and grateful
D. excited and thankful
75. In the story the writer intends to tell us that .
A. scars always remind people of their past experiences
B. wounds in the mind are more painful than those in the body
C. a painful past always leaves scars on a person’s mind
D. scars do not necessarily mean pain at all times
76. Which of the following viewpoints will the writer most probably agree with?
A. Be grateful to a painful past, for you can always learn something from it.
B. Other people’s criticism or blame may hurt you, but if it is for your own good, you
should take it thankfully.
C. The swimming hole of life is filled with danger, but you don’t need to be too serious
about it as someone will never let you go.
D. If someone hurts you, be grateful to them, for they mean no harm
E
Either out of confusion or discomfort we sometimes express our feelings in an unclear way. One key to making your feelings clear is to realize that you most often can shorten them in a few words: hurt, glad, confused, excited, angry, and so on. In the same way, with a little thought you can probably describe very briefly any reasons you have for feeling a certain way.
In addition to avoiding too long expressions, a second way to prevent confusion is to avoid downplaying your feelings by saying“I’m a little unhappy”or“I’m pretty excited”.Of course, not all feelings are strong ones. We do feel degrees of sadness and joy, for example, but some communicators have a tendency to downplay almost every feeling. Do you?
A third danger to avoid is expressing feelings in an indirect or coded manner. This happened most often when the sender is uncomfortable about showing his or her feeling in question. Some codes are verbal ones, as when the sender hints more or less subtly (巧妙地) at the message. For example, an indirect way to say“I’m feeling lonely”might be“I guess there isn’t much happening this weekend, so if you’re not busy, why don’t you drop by?”Such a message is so indirect that the chances that your real feeling will be recognized are small. For this reason, people who send coded messages stand less of a chance of having their feeling understood and their need met.
Finally, you can express yourself clearly by making sure that both you and your partner understand that your feeling is centered in a specific(特定)set of environments rather than being indicative of the whole relationship. Instead of saying“I hate you”, say “I hate you when you don’t keep your promises”. Rather than“I’m bored with you”, say “I’m bored when you talk about your money.”
77. According to the first sentence, we sometimes express our feelings in an unclear way
because .
A. we are not clear what it is
B. we have just get rid of a discomfort
C. we are in a very bad feeling
D. we do not want to tell anyone about it
78. We downplay our feeling if .
A. we don’t like it and try to hold it from anyone
B. we control our anger without letting it out
C. we use weak words to express a strong feeling
D. we are confused and feel uncomfortable about it
79. The writer points out that if we express our feelings in a coded manner .
A. we will make them harder to be understood
B. we will feel all the more confused
C. we will feel uncomfortable
D. we will make the listener uncomfortable
80. According to the writer,“I’m bored with you”is an expression .
A. that strengthens our feelings
B. that downplays our feelings
C. that will make our listener confused
D. that is made in a coded manner

In recent years, studying abroad has been popular.Tens of thousands of Chinese students have gone to foreign countries to study. Many people are trying their best to apply to go abroad.
There are many advantages in attending schools abroad.First, students who have studied abroad can act as mediators between people of different cultures.Second, we can learn much more advanced knowledge of science and technology from foreign countries.Third, we can learn much foreign languages more quickly.
However, there are some disadvantages. Most of the students are too young to live alone without any living experience.Besides, being far away from their home country, they may feel lonely and homesick. Also, of course, the costs are much higher there than at home.In spite of theses, advantages are more than disadvantages. In my opinion, it is advisable to attend schools abroad.。
