第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A Planet Hunter
When Geoff Marcy was 14, his parents bought him a telescope. Every night, he would go onto the roof outside his window to see the wonders of the sky.
“What excited me most was whether there were planets(行星) in other solar(太阳的) systems where life might exist,” he says. “I decided to try to find planets orbiting(沿……轨道运行) other stars like our Sun.”
And he did. “My fellow researcher, Paul Butler, and I found our first planet in 1995,” Dr.
Marcy says. “We worked for ten years without finding anything! But we stuck with it, and our patience paid off.”
Since then, the two scientists have discovered 65of the more than 100 planets found orbiting other stars. Dr. Marcy and Dr. Butler also spotted the first “family” of three planets. In June 2002they announced another discovery: a Jupiter-like(像木星一样的) planet orbiting star 55 Cancri.
At first, the two researchers found only planets that orbit close to stars. Recently, the scientists found planets farther out. The planet orbiting 55 Cancri is a major breakthrough: it is the first sighting of a large gas planet about the same distance from the star as Jupiter is from the Sun.
Why is this important? Scientists think that life on Earth may exist because of two special features(特征) in our solar system. The first is Jupiter.
“Because it’s so big, Jupiter pulls comets and asteroids(小行星), or they all come and hit the Earth.” Dr. Marcy explains. “Without Jupiter, life on Earth would likely have been destroyed.”
A second feature is that Earth is a rocky planet where liquid water, which is necessary for life, can exist. Unlike gas planets, rocky planets like Earth have surfaces where water can gather in pools and seas, which may support life. A huge space exists between the Jupiter-like planet and two other planets that lie close to 55 Cancri. Is there an Earthlike planet in the space, too small for us to notice? If so, says Dr. Mar cy, “We would have two striking similarities to our solar system: a Jupiter-like planet and an Earth-like planet. And there may be life!” 56.What can we learn about Dr. Marcy from the passage? A .He is found of watching Jupiter.
B .He is from a scientist family.
C .He dislikes working with Paul Butler.
D .He is interested in finding life in outer space.
57.Which of the following is true of the recent discovery?
A .The planet is not as protective as Jupiter.
B.The planet is close star 55 Cancri.
C.The planet proves to be a gas planet.
D.The planet is as large as Jupiter.
58.How many planets orbiting other stars have the two scientists discovered so far?
A.100. B.69. C.66. D.65.
59.Dr. Marcy thinks that life may exist in the 55 Cancri system because __________.

D.he has found signs of life in the system
60.“But we stuck with it” (in Paragraph 3) means _____________.
A.they felt discouraged B.they carried on with it
C.they failed in their attempt D.they made some progress

Blameless
I was a freshman in college when I met the Whites. They were completely different from my own family, yet I felt at home with them immediately. Jane White and I became friends at school, and her family welcomed me like a long-lost cousin.
In my family, it was always important to place blame when anything bad happened.
“Who did this?” my mother would scream about a dirty kitchen.
“This is all your fault, Katharine,” my father would insist when the cat got out or the dishwasher broke.
From the time we were little, my sister, brothers and I told on each other. We set a place for blame at the dinner table.
But the Whites didn’t worry about who had done what. They picked up the pieces and moved on with their lives. The beauty of this was driven home to me the summer Jane died.
In July, the White sisters and I decided to take a car trip from their home in Florida to New York. The two older sisters, Sarah and Jane, were college students, and the youngest, Amy, had recently turned sixteen. Proud of having a new driver’s license(驾照), Amy was excited about practicing her driving on the trip. She showed off her license to everyone she met.
The big s isters shared the driving of Sarah’s new car during the first part of the trip, but when they reached less crowded areas, they let Amy take over. Somewhere in South Carolina, we pulled off the highway to eat. After lunch, Amy got behind the wheel she came to a crossroads with a stop sign. Whether she was nervous or just didn’t see the sign no one would ever know, but Amy continued into the crossroads without stopping. The driver of a large truck, unable to stop in time, ran into our car.
Jane was killed immediately.
I was slightly injured. The most difficult thing that I’ve ever done was to call the Whites to tell them about the accident and that Jane had died. Painful as it was for me to lose a good friend, I knew that it was far worse for them to lose a child.
When Mr. and Mrs. White arrived at the hospital, they found their two daughters sharing a room. Sarah had a few cuts on the head; Amy’s leg was broken. They hugged(拥抱) us all and cried tears of sadness and of joy at seeing their daughters. They wiped away the girls’ tears and made a few jokes at Amy as she learned to use her crutches(拐杖).
To both of their daughters, and especially to Amy, over and over they simply said, “We’re so glad that you’re alive.”
I was astonished. No blame. No accusations.
Later, I asked the Whites why they never talked about the fact that Amy was driving and had run a stop sign.
Mrs. White said, “Jane’s gone, and we miss her terribly. Nothing we say or do will ever bring her back. But Amy has her whole life ahead of her. How can she lead a full and happy life if she feels we blame her for her sister’s death?”
They were right. Amy graduated form the University of California and got married several years ago. She works as a teacher of learning-disabled students. She’s also a mothe r of two little girls of her own, the oldest named Jane.
61.The author of the passage is ________.
A.Mrs. White’s niece B.Jane’s school friend
C.The Whites’ cousin D.Sarah’s friend from college
62.How did the author’s parents differ from the Whites?
A.T he author’s parents were less caring.
B.The author’s parents were less loving.
C.The author’s parents were less friendly.
D.The author’s parents were less understanding.
63.How did the accident occur?
A.Amy didn’t stop at a crossroads and a truck hit t heir car.
B.Amy didn’t know what to do when she saw the stop sign.
C.Amy didn’t slow down so their car ran into a truck.
D.Amy didn’t get off the highway at a crossroads.
64.The Whites did not blame Amy for Jane’s death because __________.
A.they didn’t want Amy to feel ashamed and sorry for the rest of her life
B.Amy was badly injured herself and they didn’t want to add to her pain
C.they didn’t want to blame their children in front of others
D.Amy was their youngest daughter and they loved her best
65.From the passage we can learn that ______________.
A.Amy has never recovered from the shock
B.Amy changed her job after the accident
C.Amy lost her memory after the accident
D.Amy has lived quite a normal life.
C
The single, decisive factor that made it possible for mankind to settle in lasting communities (社区,聚居地)was agriculture. After farming was developed in the Middle East in about 6500 BC, people living in family units did not have to be on the move continually searching for food or hunting their animals. Once people could control the production of food and be assured of a reliable supply of it, their lives changed completely.
Farming was a revolutionary discovery. It not only made settlements possible and later the building of cities but it also made available a reliable food supply. With more food available, more people could be fed. Population therefore increased. The growing number of people available for more kinds of work led to the development of new social formations. With more and more food, a community could support a variety of workers who were not farmers.
Farming in the world over has always relied upon a dependable water supply. For the earliest societies this meant rivers and streams or regular rainfall. The first great civilizations grew up along rivers. Later communities were able to develop by taking advantage of the rainy seasons.
All of the ancient civilizations probably developed in much the same way, in spite of a few differences. As villages grew, the production of more numerous goods became possible. Cloth could be woven from wool. Houses made of wood, brick, and stone could be put up.
The science of mathematics was an early outgrowth of agriculture. People studied the movements of the moon, the sun, and the planets to work out seasons, By doing so they created the first calendars(日历).With a calendar it was possible to find out the arrival of each growing season. Measurement of land areas was necessary if field was to be divided accurately, Measurement of amounts, for example, of seeds or grains was also a factor in farming and housekeeping. Later measures of value as money exchange became common.
All of the major ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, and China appeared in the 4th millennium BC.Historians still argue over which one came into being first. It may well have been the Middle East. This place reaches out from the Nile River in Egypt northward along the coast of former Palestine, then eastward into Asia to include Mesopotamia. In this area people settled along the riverbanks and practiced field agriculture. This kind of farming depended on the reproduction of seed, normally from grain crops.
66.The final result of the development of agriculture was that .
A.the population increased slowly.
B.a variety of jobs were open to people
C.a constant supply of food was certain
D.a new social formation came into being
67.Which of the following is true according to the writer?

D.Mathematics helped create the agricultural society.
68.The development of mathematics .
A.got the society out of the agricultural age
B.made possible the exchange of agricultural goods
C.enabled people to arrange their agricultural activities better
D.helped create early agricultural civilization around the world
69.It can be safely concluded that .
A.the earliest civilization first came into being in the Middle East.
B.the development of maths played a decisive role in the birth of modern cities
C.all ancient civilizations around the world developed in exactly the same way
D.the development of agriculture played a very important role in human history
70.The passage is mainly about .
A.the relationship between agriculture and society

Frank Lloyd Wright probably is the greatest architect that the United States has ever produced. He was very gifted and had a natural ability to design buildings. His buildings were not only beautiful, but they were also practical and useful. They fit their purposes ve ry well. Wright’s churches, for example, make people feel like thinking and praying. His office buildings make people enjoy working, and his houses make people feel comfortable at home. However, Fank Lloyd Wright’s beautiful, practical and useful buildings are not the only reason that he is famous. There is another reason.
Frank Lloyd Wright is called the greatest American architect because he started an American style in architecture. Most of the architecture in the United States before Wright was really European, not American. Wright’s buildings do not look like old European buildings. They have their own style. Wright’s ideas about style are still used in the United States and in other parts of the world.
The most important idea in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Style of Architecture is that a building must fit its purpose and the land around it . His houses are often called “grass-land houses” because their lines are similar to the lines on the grassland. Both the lines of the grassland and the lines of Wright’s house are parallel(平行的)to the horizon, the place where earth and sky seem to meet. They are horizontal lines. Most European style houses, in contrast, have many vertical lines that form 90°angles with the horizon.

B.not only limited to the U.S
C.no longer popular
D.somewhat similar to the European style

A.They were very large and beautiful.
B.They were very comfortable.
C.They could be used as churches.
D.They were beautiful in design but not practical in use.
73.What’s the most important idea in Wright’s style?
A.Architectural design should match natural surroundings.
B.A building must have grassland around it.
C.American style in architect should be different from the European’s
D.Design should be more important than use.
74.Which of the following is NOT true about Wright’s “grass-land houses”?
A.The lines of “grass-land houses” are similar to lines on the grassland.
B.The lines of “grass-land houses” are horizontal.
C.The color of the lines of “grass-land houses ”is green.
D.They are different from European style houses.
75.The best title for this passage would be .
A.The Differences between the American and European Styles in Architecture
B.“Grass-land” houses Designed by Wright
C.How to Make Your Houses More Beautiful
D.The Influence of Wright on American Architecture

W: Where are you from, David?
M: I am from White Town.
W: White Town? That’s a new name for me. Where is it?
M: It’s twenty miles to the east of this place, at the foot of the mountain.
W: Really? I haven’t been to that place. Can you tell me something about it?
M: Well, it’s a ver y small town with a little more than one thousand people.
W: Are there any interesting places there?
M: If you like climbing hills, there are a lot of beautiful views on the mountain. On top of the mountain, you can see the small towns around it and a river that goes past the neighboring towns.
W: That’s a very good view.
M: Yes. Talking about the river, you can do a lot of things there: fishing, swimming, boating. We often go boating on weekends.
W: That sounds very nice. I’ll surely go there soon.

M: Now do you remember how to cook this dish?
W: Let me repeat it. First of all, I break the egg into the bowl and mix it with what?
M: With some oil and salt.
W: Yes, why do I always forget oil and salt? And then what do I do? I heat the pan, right?
M: Yes, but remember the tomato before that. You need that too.
W: Oh, yes. The tomato to add color and taste to the egg. So I cut it into thin pieces and put it aside.
M: Now you can heat the pan.
W: So I heat the pan and add some cooking oil. And when the oil is hot, I pour the egg into the pan and spread the tomato pieces on it.
M: When is it ready?
W: When the egg sets.
M: Right, you’ve got it all.
