After reading this short novel, a kind of depressive mood created a wall around my heart, I felt sympathy for Emily and what she suffered. Her life was dazzlingly beautiful once, but was tied up at her most beautiful and radiant time, she ached for love, but could not grasp it when love really came to her. Emily was thirst for love but finally died under the shadow of feudal ethics and rites.
When she was a beautiful young girl, she had a nice vision for love, she desired to get a rose, but those man who wanted to sent her rose were all shut out by her father. As a aristocratic Miss, Emily didn’t revolt, she behaved graciously and genteelly, just stood there looking at her father turned down her admirers, she also felt sad and sorrowful, and didn’t know whether she could get a beautiful rose and whether she could have a romantic love. Those roses which belonged to her were actually withered outside her home.
After her father died, she insisted that he had not died for three days, but she had to accept it in the end, the man who drove away her love finally gone, she was left alone. She began to face reality, but she was also afraid of being old, she had her hair cut to made her look younger. Eventually she fell in love with a man who was a foreman called Homer Barron without the obstruction of her father, the man was a Yankee, amd in the old society of the south, Barron was treated as a humble and lowly man, all people in the town thought that it was impossible that they two get married, they thought such a noblewoman like Emily would never accept a humble Yankee, but only those olds knew that no matter how sorrowful Emily was, she would not forget her identity as a noblewoman and involved with a humble man.
In order to pursued her love, she chosed to give up her noble identity, the noble identity was what made her missed so much true love when she was young. She began to devoted for her loved one, she bought daily supplies, tableware and some clothes for Barron prudentially. People in town began to guess that if they were going to get married, but finally people found that the man who told others he didn’t want to marry a woman, the man who was treasured by Emily so much suddenly disappeared, almost the same time Emily got out her house to bought some poison in the downtown, people guessed that she might would kill herself, but at last proved she didn’t.
Until Emily died after she lived for 74 years in this world, her only black servant guided the first guests into her hose, people amazedly found that there was a room which was locked down closely, and inside the room, there was a rotten and dried male corpse. All the puzzles now solved, Emily killed the man who refused and wanted to leave her, she also killed the love she desired deeply but could not get. At the same time, people noticed that in the second pillow was the indentation of a head, and a iron-gray hair on the pillow, they knew that old Emily slept with this corpse before she died.
Such a noble aristocratic and educated Emily should killed her lover to buried her own love. She missed blossoming of flower when it was spring, even in the autumn she could not harvest the fruits of her love. She tried to chase her love, but was tried up by her identity and status, she dreamed to have a family, but the dream was crushed by the unwillingness of Barron her lover, she was lonely all the time, she was lonely even until the day she killed Barron. Barron didn’t want to get married with Emily, he dared not to promise a family for Emily, he dared not be responsible for Emily, he also could not ensure that Emily was the one he wanted to live with for the whole life, maybe man like Barron was just like a boat, sailed all over the world, he liked freedom, what he looked for were some harbours one after another, but Emily was not that kind of woman.
What Emily was looking for was a normal life, she suffered a lot, she just wanted to find a man to share weal and woe with her, to snap out of lonely. When she could not reach her dream, she chosed to preserve her love, she was afraid of lonely, she was afraid of discard, she poisoned the man who she deeply loved so that she could hold him day and night, he could no longer refuse her, because he was killed, they could be together forever. The room which was decorated as a rose garden were decayed with Emily’s rosy dream.ssssq
Finally Emily became a tragedy, a victim of that society, she was just like a rose and now the rose fell dead. It was hardly for all the readers to understand that she spent reat of her life in her locked house with her black servant which followed her until the day she died.
In this world, men and women really have many differences. As for love, most women need the
power of love to keep them alive, they need to be cared, need to be loved and need to be encouraged, Emily was one of this kind of women. Because of the obstruction of her father, She had no freedom to choose her own love when she was a young girl, she had to suppress the ideas inside her mind, she must had some ideas. As for Barron, because the identity Emily held, she always kept distance with him when they were outside, she always pretended that she was higher than him in status with her head high, it must made Barron felt bad, that was the problem. Emily only knew that she should be thoughtful and treated Barron well, she bought everything for him, but she never thought about why Barron did not want to get married with her, on the contrary, she chose to take possession of him in a extreme way, she poisoned him and lived with the body everyday, but she also knew it was just a body, it was just a self-deceiving comfort.
Emily was forced to be lonely when her father was alive, but after her father gone, she could not fit into the society because she was accustomed to live alone, these feudal customs she was forced to accept when she was a kid had became a rule she must obey in her unconscious mind, as these people in town said,” poor Emily!”
Emily used to be a fresh rose but finally withered in the dark, the whole life of Emily was full of sadness and sorrow, the love that Emily aspire to was also a beautiful rose, but she had never get, the only thing she could do was understanding and comforting herself till death.
Emily was a poor woman, she was a victim of that era, what we can do now, is just send our sympathy to her who lived Hundreds of years ago , just like what William faulkner did, give her a fresh beautiful rose which she did not get in that time, a rose for Emily.。
