Graduating at90,as I did this year with a Master of Arts(MA)from the University of Buckingham in inteligence history, might invoke(授用)the expression"late starter”.My higher education formally began when I was in my60s.
I've had no material gain as a result.Due to my Bachelor of Arts(BA)in psychology, there followed a volunteer job as a drugs counsellor. There were significant disadvantagesto acquiring my two undergraduate degrees-six years of constant hard work involving the addiction to the course for most of the year is to affect domestic relationships. It did,but we survived.
However,I think the spiritual and intellectual benefits far outweighed the disadvantages.Indeed,I was not really looking forward to attendingmy first seminar(研讨班),I was worried about what to expect, but I needn't have been-my fellow students immediately put me at ease. Two nice young ladies moved apart and offered me a chair between them.Ir was,a relief.Friendship between students is well known, and it was very much in evidence here.I made many friends among them, and they seemed to treat.me no differently from any other students, except for one big Kenyan boy who insisted on calling me"sir".
I am not aware of any deep reason for undertaking the MA.Probably a continuing wish to learn exists, and a chance to put at into practice presented itself when my wife showed me an invitation from the University of Buckingham to apply for a master's course on the history of intelligence with Bletchley Park Studies. She said it seemed right up my street, and that as we had recently discussed the need for a rewdirection-why not take it?The related background was that my last job was at Hanslope Park(I am a qualified electronics engineer),an organization that took over from Bletchley Park. These circumstances arouse my curiosity again.I applied and was accepted.
So,would I recommend a return to formal learning post retirement?Surely, yes.

Researchers at the Allen Institute for AI in Seattle released new technology that was designed to make moral judgments. They called it Delphi.Anyone could visit the Delphi website and ask it a moral question.
Psychologist Joseph Austerweil tested the technology using a few simple circumstances. When he asked if it was right to kill one person to save100others,it said he should.Feeling quite pleased,he then asked if he should kill one person to save101others.This time,Delphi said he should not.Though some users such as Austerweil found Delphi was sometimes frustrating and disturbing, most agreed that the system was surprisingly wise. Many technologists believed Delphi is an effort to address what some see as a major problem in moder AI systems:They can be as flawed as the people who create them.
Facial recognition systems and digital assistants occasionally show prejudice against women and people of color.Social networks like fail to control hate speech, despite wide use of AI.AI systems used by courts make sentencing(判刑)recommendations that can often seem illogical. Many computer scientists arc working to address that issue. And the creators of Delphi hope to build a moral framework that could he used in any online service, robot or vehicle.
Delphi works like a neural(神经的)network that learns skills by analyzing large amounts of data. After gathering millions of everyday circumstances from websites and other sources, the Allen Institute asked workers on an online service-everyday people paid to do digital work at companies like Amazon-to identify each one as right or wrong. Then they fed the data-more than1.7million moral judgments by real live humans-into Delphi.
When the Allen Institute released Delphi,it described the system as a computational model for moral judgments. But after many complained about the obyious limitations of the system, the researchers adjusted the website. It now calls Delphi"a research model designed to copy people's moral judgments."
It also comes with an announcement:"Model outputs should not be used for advice for humans, and could be potentially offensive or harmful."
28.What does Austerweil most probably think of Delphi?
A.It lives up to his expectations.
B.It is very professional and patient.
C.It can't answer questions on morality.
D.All moral judgments made by it aren't reasonable.
29.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word"flawed"in paragraph2?
A.wise
B.sensitive
C.faulty
D.greedy
30.How did Delphi leam morality?
A.It acquired data on morality collected by Amazon.
B.It analyzed humans'vast number of moral judgments.
C.It studied moral rules established by AI researchers.
D.It collected moral judgments from a lot of websites.
31.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Delphi has been widely used in all walks of life.
B.Delphi does justice to people of any race.
C.Facial recognition systems become more precise.

With the DJ shouting in a strong local accent and viewers seating themselves wherever they could find a spot to view the game, two teams of basketball players who were no other than the local villagers played under professional-class format and the game became tense in the last seconds at the fourth quarter.
The rescheduled final game of Guizhou country basketball league, known as“Village Basketball Association",was played in Taipan Village,a remote rural area with a population of only1,200,in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou Province on Monday after a local storm hit on Sunday night.Team Qiandongnan beat Team Zunyi by a score of68to65.
There were more viewers for this game, although it was a weekday, compared with the 30,000-strong crowd seen during the past weekend when the third-place game went viral. The festival-turned-competition is a gathering which is attractive to local villagers and visitors looking for a special local experience.
How can a grass-roots competition become more attractive than professional games to people like me?I think it's because sport essentially originates from the grass roots and everybody can find the most available social connections by being part of it.
The Village BA reminded me of my tour in Yangshuo of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region where I was getting tired of the landscape scenery until I ran into a local basketball game on my way back to the hotel.I decided to take a rest and sat on the bare ground by the court rubbing shoulders with locals and visitors and letting out whatever I wanted to give out.Like the players of the Village BA in
Guizhou, the winning team in Yangshuo was awarded with nothing more than local products such as live ducks and cooked meat.
The sudden popularity of the Village BA could be due to the universal social media and the users' tendency to explore something different from their surroundings. But what may remain lasting and grow even bigger is people's pursuit of spiritual nutrition and the grass-roots sport is one of the top destinations that are easy to reach.
32.What do we know about the Village BA?
A.Its players are amateurs.
B.It is divided into two quarters.
C.Its audience are local villagers.
D.It is tenser than professional games.
33.What does the author think of the grass-roots competition?
A.It is available to everyone.
B.It trains professional players.
C.It is played without strict rules.
D.It helps people find social connections.
34.Why does the author mention his travel in Yangshuo?
A.To show the popularity of the Village BA.
B.To praise the place for its beautiful landscape.
C.To reflect the financial problems of the Village BA.
D.To prove the players of the Village BA are famous.
35.What is most important for the popularity of the Village BA?
A.People's fame concer.
B.People's spiritual needs.
C.People's desire for wealth.
D.People's passion for exploration.

“I look like a clown(小丑)!”Winston thought sadly. He pulled his cap down, thankful for the cover it provided. He wanted to escape the attention of the people outside the barbershop(理发店).He looked around before hurrying away into the darkness to put some distance between himself and the curious eyes of others.
As he moved quickly down the street,Winston wondered why he hadn't spoken up to prevent the terrible haircut. He felt sad and questioned why this had happened to him.Did the barber give him this messed-up haircut on purpose?Winston didn't believe it because the barber looked very friendly. But it seemed so crazy!Could he have unknowingly offended the barber, and this disastrous hairstyle was the barber's way of getting back at him?
Winston was also worried that Jack would laugh at him.Jack was his cousin and liked playing jokes. But maybe he wouldn't;he was understanding too.Winston kept thinking about it.Upon entering his new home,,Winston's mom greeted him from the kitchen. She called out to him, asking to see his new hairstyle.Winston walked into the kitchen, his cap still on,and slowly took it off.
His mother looked very surprised. She couldn't help but burst into laughter.“Oh déar,”she shouted.“What happened?"Winston stood silently for a moment before letting out his anger. He blamed his mom for bringing him to this place, torcing him to attend a new school where he believed everyone would make fun of him.He also said he hated this terrible hairstyle, and his hair was beyond fixing.
Just as his anger was about to grow, the doorbell-rang.Winston's mom calmly told him to answer it. As he opened the door,he forgot to cover his terrible haircut, and there stood his cousin Jack.Since it was Saturday today, they had planned to go skating together.Winston felt extremely embarrassed.

第一节应用文
Be Smart Online Shoppers
Good morning, everyone. It’s a great honor for me to stand here to deliver a speech titled“Be smart online shoppers”.Nowadays,it’s common for us to make online purchases, especially when we have no time to visit physical shops.
No doubt online shopping brings us much convenience. However, its negative aspects are also apparent. For one thing,we may receive goods that fail to live up to our expectations. For another,it’s easy for us to buy goods that are not badly needed. So,it’s important for us to be smart online shoppers. First,we must be careful not to give out our personal privacy.Second,if we receive something of poor quality,we should apply to deliver it back and get a full refund without st but not least,we had better think twice before clicking the mouse.
That’s all.Thank you.
第二节读后续写:
Jack stared at Winston in disbelief.Realizing there was something wrong,Jack didn’t laugh this time.He inquired about what happened, eager to understand the situation. After knowing the whole story, Jack reassured him that his haircut was not as disastrous as he had imagined.Astonished by this unexpected support,Winston no longer felt upset. Then Winston’s mom invited them to taste her freshly
baked biscuits.Over the biscuits,Winston felt ashamed of his earlier attitude towards his mother so he nerved himself to apologize. His mother’s gentle smile conveyed understanding, and she held Winston in a warm embrace.
That afternoon Winston returned to the barber’s shop, hoping to find out the truth.Upon his arrival, the barber greeted him warmly, extending a sincere apology. The barber explained that he had been thinking of some sorrowful news regarding his family when Winston sat in his chair. On learning this, Winston felt relieved and forgave him.As a gesture of goodwill, the barber offered to fix his hair for free and Winston gladly accepted that. This experience taught him a valuable lesson about giving people a chance and not jumping to conclusions.

Hello everyone.Today I’d like to talk something about my hometown.I come from Indonesia, which is an island nation. And we have so many islands. As to some famous places in Indonesia,my list is very long, but I will talk about Bali first because this one is the most famous.Bali is a very, very beautiful island. In Bali, you can find many beautiful beaches. The preferable time to go there is August, because it’s summertime in Indonesia. But I feel a little uncomfortable about the hot weather.I’ve been to Bali so many times, because my dad used to work there.Every vacation I went there to stay with him, and that gave me the chances to visit the beautiful beaches.
Most of the people in Bali are Hindus,so there are a lot of Hindu temples in Bali. But Pura Besakih is the largest temple in Bali.I have been there twice, and it’s always crowded, not only with local tourists, but also with international tourists.。
