Dating apps can be tricky to navigate, particularly when you’re trying to make out someone’s credibility. How do you know that Ben from London is really 25-years-old? Is his profile picture recent? Does he really have a puppy? Is his name even Ben? One thing you can’t cheat is your genetics, which is why a new dating app is using DNA compatibility(兼容性) as a basis for its matchmaking algorithm(算法).
Pheramor requires all users to submit a cheek swab using a specially-created kit from which a team of in-house scientists can sequence the specific genes associated with attraction and identify which users might be sexually compatible.
The process works by isolating the 11 genes that link to our pheromones, the chemical signals that are believed to trigger sexual attraction. Combining this data with the personal information stated on users’ profiles allows the app to make very specific matches.
“Pheramor uses both your biology and your social technology; we collect your genetic data through a q-tip-like cheek swab and acquire your like, dislikes, and interests from your social media profiles like Facebook, Twitter, etc,” the app’s website explains, “All of this information will be used in our proprietary algorithm, which is designed to learn you r preferences.” The Houston-based app is already up and running but hopes to officially launch in February with 3,000 members.
“When we smell pheromones, what we’re actually smelling is how diverse someone’s immune system is compared to our own,” explains co-founder Brittany Barreto, who has a PHD in genetics, “Evolution is very strong. So we’re smelling each other, trying to figure out who is the best person to mate with,” she told the Houston Chronicle.
She added that Pheramor’s advanced technology digs deeper than traditional dating apps by

moving past the basic info listed on most profiles, making it almost impossible for people to cheat their way to a date. Imposters might have trouble catfishing their way out of this one.
1.Which of the following is NOT concluded in Pheramaor’s working process?
A. 11 genes related to pheromones should be separated first.
B. Individual info are to be collected visa social media tools.
C. Genetic samples are usually collected by medical operation.
D. Special method of calculation is used to guarantee the accuracy.
2.According to Brittany Barreto, we can conclude that ________.
A. pheromone Is actually something behind different immune systems
B. smelling is the best way for people to find companions
C. Pheramor’s advanced technology is just based on the basic info of people
D. some traditional date apps also put an end to cheaters online
3.The real purpose of writing this passage is to ________.
A. crack down on cybercrime.
B. introduce a scientific research

人工智能
Every day, we are inching closer to some kind of artificial intelligence. Advances in big data, machine learning and robotics are going to give us a world where computers are effectively intelligent in terms of how we deal with them. Should you be scared by this? Absolutely, but not in the usual “robot overlords” (机器人帝国) kind of way. Instead, the real fear should be about getting human beings wrong, not getting AI right.
The key to the technology is the ability of computers to recognize human emotions based on the ‘‘activation” of muscles in the face. A computer can identify the positions of facial muscles and use them to infer the emotional state of its user. Then the machine responds in ways that take that emotional state into account.
One potential appli cation of it is to provide “emotional robots” for the elderly. Having a machine that could speak in a kind way would comfort a lonely older person. That is a good thing, right? But that won’t also relieve us from questioning how we ended up in a society th at takes care of the elderly because we don’t know what else to do with them? Can’t we have more humane solutions than robots?
“Emotion data” aren’t the same thing as the real and vivid emotional experiences we human beings have. Our emotions are more than our faces or voices. How can they be pulled out like a
3 / 42
thread, one by one, from the fabric of our being?
Research programs can come with much philosophical concern, too. From the computers’ point of view, what the computing technology captures are emotions, but at its root is a reduction of human experience whose outward expressions can be captured algorithmically (计算上). As the technology is used in the world, it can reframe the world in ways that can be hard to escape from.
The technology will clearly have useful applications, but once it treats emotions as data, we may find that it is the only aspect of emotion we come to recognize or value. Once billions of dollars floods into this field, we will find ourselves trapped in a technology that is reducing our lives. Even worse, our “emotion data” will be used against us to make money for someone else. And that is what scares me about AI.
4.Why does the author feel scared of the development of artificial intelligence?
A. The technology is developing much too slowly.
B. Computers can’t recognize human emotions.
C. Robots would get control of human beings.
D. People may use artificial intelligence improperly.
5.Why does the author dislike the idea of providing “emotional robots” for the elderly?
A. The aged people will find it hard to live with them.
B. What elderly people need is much more than that.
C. It can’t relieve us of the pressure from modern society.
D. It’s impossible to use them to keep the elderly healthy.
6.What does the author intend to conclude in Paragraphs 4 and 5?
A. Emotional data can’t be equal to human emotions.
B. AI technology itself has fewer and fewer faults.
C. AI-built-in robots won’t have the ability to understand human beings.
高中英语话题阅读信息技术
D. The information computers get can reframe human emotions.
7.How does the author think about ‘‘emotion data” according to the last paragraph?
A. It can arouse people’s sense of value.
B. It can improve people’s human experience.
C. It may be misused as a tool to make profits.
D. It may push the AI technology forward.

The researchers say a person loses two months for every kilogram overweight they are—and seven years for smoking a packet of cigarettes a day.
Unusually, the Edinburgh university team found their answers by analysing differences in people’s genetic code or DNA. Finally they think it will show new ways of helping us to live longer.
The group used the genetic code of more than 600, 000 people who are taking part in a natural experiment. If someone smokes, drinks, drops out of school and is overweight, it can be difficult to identify the impact of one specific unhealthy behavior.
高中英语话题阅读信息技术
Instead, the researchers turned to the natural experiment. Some people carry mutations(变异) in their DNA that increase(食欲) or make them more likely to put on weight, so researchers were able to compare those programmed to eat more with those who were not. The research team also found specific mutations in human DNA that alter lifespan (寿命).
●Mutations in a gene (a set of instructions in DNA) that is involved in running the immune system could add seven months of life on average.
●People with a mutation that increased levels of bad cholesterol knocked eight months off lifespan.
●A rare mutation in a gene—APOE—linked to dementia reduced lifespan by 11 months.
●And one that made smoking m ore appealing cut lives by five months.
Dr Joshi says that while genes do influence lifespan, “you’ve got even more influence” through the choices you make. Dr Joshi said, “We hope to discover genes affecting lifespan to give us new information about agein g and construct treatment tor ageing.”
There are also some disease mutations that clearly affect lifespan and to destructive effect, such as the Huntington’s gene. People with Huntington’s often die in their 20s.
However, in order to follow people until the end of their lives, many of the people studied were born before 1940.
12.What is the most difficult for the researchers to find?

It may surprise bookworms, but apparently masterpieces such as Jane Eyre are lacking in something — sound effects. An electronic-book firm is adding background noises and music to the works of Charlotte Bronte, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and William Shakespeare in the hope of attracting younger readers. In one example, a description of rain lashing against a window in a Sherlock Holmes story will be “enhanced” with matching noises.
The first multimedia e-books — with sounds to accompany novels — will be available this Friday in the UK. The Booktrack releases are available to iPad users, with other tablet computer versions to follow. The concept is already in use in the U.S., where the classics come with added sound effects. Readers for example can hear the china cups chinking in Mr. Darcy’s garden as they read Pride And Prejudice.
A story by Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie will be released later in the year with a specially crafted orchestral score. Rushdie’s story In The South will be released with a soundtrack provided by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
The Power Of Six by Pittacus Lore, a novel for young adults, is one of the first to be tested with a soundtrack which builds in suspense in keeping with the plot. It works by timing the speed of each reader and the software measures the “turning” of a page and moves t he music or sounds along accordingly. It has been created by Booktrack which synchronizes (使同步) music to each novel. It is funded by Peter Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal.
Mr. Thiel said, “It’s always exciting to witness the creation of a new form of media. The technology promises to captivate readers in a different way.”

Google, one of the world’s outstanding tech companies, was attacked. It wasn’t its search engine that was attacked or its advertising platform or even its social network. Google+. Instead, it was a building.
Two web security experts hacked (侵入) into its Wharf 7 office in Sydney, Australia, through Google’s building management system (BMS). One of them, Billy Rios, says, “My colleague and I have lot of experience in web security, but it is not something that people couldn’t learn. Once you understand how the system works, it is very simple.”
They found the system on Shodan, a search engine that lists devices connected to the Internet, and then ran it through their own software to identify who owned the building. In the case of the Google hacking, the researchers had no immoral purpose and just informed Google about what they found.
According to Mr Rios, who runs security company Whitescope, there are 50, 000 buildings currently connected to the Internet, including research institutes, churches and hospitals, and 2, 000 of those are online with password protection, Martyn Thomas, a professor of IT at Gresham College in the UK, says, “It is beyond doubt that attempts to attack building management systems are happening all the time.”
Making a building smart generally means connecting the systems that control heating, lighting and security to the Internet and the wider corporate network. There was a strong reason

for doing this, said Andrew Kelly, principal security consultant at defence company Qinetiq.
“Energy savings are the biggest factor in connecting building management systems to the corpor ate network,” he says. “It gives those who run the building better control and offers between 20% to 50% in energy savings,” he adds.
But it also makes them less secure. And if any of these feels like a Hollywood film, think again.

Adding math talk to story time at home is a winning factor for children's math achievement, according to a new research from the University of Chicago. The study from psychologists Sian Beilock and Susan Levine shows a marked increase in math achievement among children whose families used Bedtime Math, an iPad app that delivers engaging math story problems for parents

and children to solve together.
Even children who used the app with their parents as little as once a week saw gains in math achievement by the end of the school year. The app's effect was especially strong for children whose parents tend to be anxious or uncomfortable with math.
Previous research from this group has demonstrated the importance of adults' attitudes about math for children's math success. For example, a recent study found that math-anxious parents who help their children with math homework actually weaken their children's math achievement.
The new findings demonstrate that structured, positive interactions around math at home can cut the link between parents' uneasiness about math and children's low math achievement.
"Many people experience high levels of anxiety when they have to solve a math problem, with a majority of adults feeling at least some worries about math," said Beilock, professor in Psychology and author of Choke, a book about stress and performance. "These math-anxious parents are probably less likely to talk about math at home, which affects how competent their children are in math. Bedtime Math encourages a dialogue between parents and kids about math, and offers a way to engage in high-quality math interactions in a low-effort, high-impact way."
Study participants included 587 first-grade students and their parents. Families were given an iPad installed with a version of the Bedtime Math app, with which parents and their children read stories and answer questions involving math, including topics like counting, shapes and problem-solving. A control group received a reading app that had similar stories without the math content and questions related to reading comprehension instead. Children's math achievement was assessed at the beginning and end of the school year. Parents completed a questionnaire about their nervousness with math.
The more times parents and children in the math group used the app, the higher children's achievement on a math assessment at the end of the school year. Indeed, children who frequently used the math app with their parents outperformed similar students in the reading group by
