(NEW YORK)A French tourist highly praised(赞扬) for saving a two-year-old girl in Manhattan said he didn’t think twice before jumping into the cold East River.
Tuesday’s Daily News said 29-year-old young man who left the spot quickly after bringing the girl to safety last Saturday.
He lifted the little girl out of the water after she fell off the bank(河岸) near a museum. He handed the girl to her father, David Anderson, who had jumped in after him.
“I didn’t think at all.” Duret told the Daily News. “It happened very fast. I reacted(反应) very fast.”
Duret, an engineer on vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the bank when he saw something falling into the water. He thought it was a doll, but realized it was a child when he walked closed to the river. Without thinking twice, he took off his coat and jumped into the water at once.
When he reached the girl, she appeared lifeless, he said. Fortunately, when she was taken out of the water, she opened her eyes slowly.
Anderson said his daughter fell off the bank while he was checking his camera. An ambulance(救护车) came later for her, said Duret, who was handed clothes from onlookers(旁观者). Duret caught a bus with his girlfriend shortly after.
