The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) was an international agreement that was designed to promote free trade between member nations. It was signed on January 1, 1947, and came into force on January 1, 1948. The GATT was originally signed by 23 countries and went through several rounds of negotiations, known as "GATT rounds," that aimed to reduce tariffs and other trade barriers.
The GATT set out the basic rules for trade in goods, including tariff concessions, non-discrimination, and most-favored-nation treatment. It also provided for the establishment of the GATT Secretariat to handle administrative matters and the conduct of trade negotiations.
The GATT was superseded by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995, but the GATT agreements remain in force and continue to be applied by the WTO's members.
