W:You can say that again!
Text 10
Most Americans with small families own either a small car or a large one.If both parents work, they usually have two cars.In large families, one of the cars is often a van.A small car can fit four people, and a large car can fit five or six people but it is crowded.A van can fit seven people easily,so a family with three children could also take their grandparents on a vacation. They could all travel together.
Mr.Hagen and his wife had a third child last year. This made them sell their second car and buy a van.Their sixth and seventh seats are used to store other things, for a family of five must carry many suitcases when they travel.
Americans call very large vans motor homes.A motor home is used for traveling vacations. When a family travels to the mountains or to the seaside, they can stay in their motor home for a few days,or even longer. All the members of a big family can be happy when they travel together. That is why motor homes become very popular. In America there are many parks for motor homes.

Sometimes, you just can’t help it.Maybe you’re watching a sad movie,or thinking about the friend who moved away.Next thing you know, your eyes are watering, and you have tears running down your cheeks. Why do people cry when they are emotional? What are tears?Scientists are working hard to find the answers to these questions.
Ad Vingerhoets is a professor of psychology at Tilburg University,in the Netherlands. He is one of the few scientists in the world who have studied crying.According to Vingerhoets, there are three types of tears.Basal tears are the first type. They lubricate(润滑) the eyes and act as a protective barrier between the eye and the rest of the world.Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them. Finally, there are emotional tears.“These are released in response to emotional states,” explains Vingerhoets.“especially when we feel helpless.”
Scientists believe that crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other.“Humans are very complex social creatures,” says Lauren Bylsma,a professor at the University of Pittsburgh,in Pennsylva nia.“It seems that tears serve to arouse help and support from others.” She says another reason we weep is that humans have the longest developmental period of almost any animal. It
takes a long time to grow up.
Vingerhoets agrees.“I think that the reason w hy humans shed tears(流眼泪) has something to do with our childhood,” he says.“That’s the time when we are still dependent on adults for love and protection and care. The major advantage of tears is that you can target them at a specific person.” Vingerhoets s ays this ability to target someone could have come in handy in prehistoric times, when humans were living among dangerous animals.Crying could attract predators(捕食者).Tears were a safer way to get attention.“In this case,it is better to use a silent signal to ask for help,” he says.
Vingerhoets and Bylsma do frequent studies to better understand why humans cry.According to Bylsma, there is still much more to discover.“It’s surprising,” she says,“how much we still don’t know.”

The Red Sea is an arm of the Indian Ocean that separates the Arabian Peninsula(半岛) from northeastern Africa. The water of the Red Sea is clear, transparent and warm.It is suitable for swimming and bathing. Therefore, the Red Sea attracts lots of tourists.
However, why is the Red Sea believed to be called the Red Sea?There is a variety of reasons. One popular explanation is due to the fact that it is so close to the Egyptian desert, which was once called the Dashret, meaning “red land” by ancient Egyptians. It would have been known as the sea of the red land.
Modern scholars believe that a likely explanation of the name comes from the fact that some Asiatic languages use colors to refer to directions. It is likely that “red” refers to “south”,which is the direction that the Red Sea points to.This theory is emphasized by the Black Sea which points north and it is said that black was once a word for north. There is also the Yellow Sea and the White Sea.
The origin of the name of the sea is not exactly known as the sea water is not red in color. Its water is mainly blue. However,in some of the most beautiful places on the Red Sea,the water appears red.
The Red Sea is surrounded by reddish mineralrich mountains. The hot and dry climate around the Red Sea causes the water to evaporate(蒸发) quickly, which means the remaining water has a high salt content,so the Red Sea is also called the Salt Sea.These conditions are suitable for a type of algae(海藻) to grow. The algae are
red in color, and since there are so many of them, they make the water in the Red Sea appear red.
Besides, sandstorms from the Sahara Desert also bring red sand that covers the Red Sea and the surrounding areas, making it look much redder. After a sandstorm, everything is coated with red sand, creating a unique and beautiful scene.

All around the world, people are working hard to make their cities safer and more pleasant for pedestrians(行人).Cities have painted crosswalks on their streets, made streets narrower, put in traffic lights and speed bumps(减速带) and made plans to help more kids walk or bike to school.
Many people have learned from a man from Brisbane,Australia, named David Engwicht. His book Reclaiming Our Cities and Towns has a simple message. 36 Kids played there, and neighbors stopped there to talk.
But now, streets are just for cars and trucks.People stay inside to get away from the noise and dangerous traffic, and we lose contact with our neighbors. 37 People need to take back their streets.Engwicht travels around the world, helping people think differently about pedestrians, streets, and neighborhoods. 38 He has worked in neighborhoods from Honolulu to Scotland.
While Engwicht was writing his book,he learned how neighbors in the city of Delft,in the Netherlands, stopped dangerous traffic on their street. They put old couches, tables, and planters in the street. 39 When the police arrived, they saw how these illegal actions made the streets safer.Soon city officials started planning ways to make cars slow down, and “calm” the traff ic.
Engwicht says we should think about streets as our “outdoor living room”. 40 In the future, streets will be safe places for children again, and our neighbors will become our friends.
A.Cars and pedestrians crowded the street.
B.Calming the traffic is just the beginning.
C.Cars could still pass, but they had to drive slowly.
D.He says that in the past, streets belonged to everybody.
E.It’s hard to take measures to solve the traffic problems.
F.Besides his books and articles,he gives many speeches.
G.Engwicht says that we should use streets for more than just transportation. 错误!
36.答案 D
解析根据横线后一句“Kids played there, and neighbors stopped there to talk.”
再根据第二段第一句“B ut now, streets are just for cars and trucks.”
37.答案G
解析根据横线前一句“People stay inside to get away from the noise and dangerous traffic, and we lose contact with our neighbors.”
再根据横线后一句“People need to take back their streets.”
38.答案 F
解析根据横线前一句“Engwicht travels around the world, helping people think differently about pedestrians, streets, and neighborhoods.”
本句继续解释他的努力,所以F项“Besides his books and articles,he gives many speeches.”
39.答案 C
解析根据横线前一句“They put old couches, tables, and planters in the street.”
所以C项“Cars could still pass, but they had to drive slowly.”
40.答案 B
解析根据后一句“In t he future, streets will be safe places for children again, and our neighbors will become our friends.”
说明前面一段最后一句“...to make cars slow down,and ‘calm’the traffic.”
