Wicked! Note the intonation(语调). It means “wonderful”, “great”, “cool”, “splendid”. It came into English from United States’ slang in the 1980s or maybe earlier. Certainly it arrived in Britain in the late 1980s.
It was part of a trend which goes back decades to use bad words to mean good concepts, or the other way round. I mean you might remember saying, “ That’s great” meaning “ It isn’t great”. And always there’s been this use of the word “naughty” to mean “nice”. So it’s part to a general trend.
It’s mainly used as an adjective in front of a noun, for example “ We had a wicked time!” Or, of course, you can use it on its own by just saying “ Wicked!” as a reaction ― that’s how youngsters use it. And youngsters, of course, knowing that grown-ups are now using it as well, have decided to use other bad words in the same sort of way ― I’ve heard young people in recent years use words like “ evil” meaning “good”, or “brutal” meaning “good”.
“Wicked” is still around. This means, of course, that the traditional sense of “wicked” is now being squeezed out. So with "wicked", tone of voice is the only way to tell the old meaning from the new meaning, and even that’s ambiguous(含糊不清的) sometimes, so you have to be careful, and pay very careful attention to the context.
And notice that the word is extending its use. The other day, for the first time, I heard somebody say “wicked cool”, meaning “very cool”.
21. What does the text mainly tell readers?
A.The changing meaning of English words.
B.The change of th e word ”wicked” in meaning.
C.The way to use English words.
D.English words from American slang.
22. The author tells readers to pay attention to the intonation of the word “wicked” because_____.
A.the word is easy to misunderstand
B.there is another word with the same pronunciation
C.its intonation decides its meaning
D.there are many meanings of the word
23. According to the text, which of the following words is often used to express its opposite
meaning?
A. Cool.
B. Wonderful.
C. Splendid.
D. Evil.
24. According to the text, we know that the word “wicked”_____.
A.has been used in Britain for more than 20 years
B.is only used in front of a noun
C.has lost its old meaning
D.was first used by American children
B
I had an experience once which taught me something about the ways people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I officiated(主持)at two funerals for two elderly women. Both died a natural death. At the first home, the son of the deceased(已故)woman said, “If only I had sent my moth er to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It’s my fault that she died.” At the second home, the son said, “If only I hadn’t insisted on her going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride was more than she could take. It’s my fault.”
When things don't turn out as we would like them to, we tend to assume(假设)that had we done things differently, the story would have had a happier ending. Any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty(内疚). Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course, for example, keeping Mother at home, would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?
There seem to be two elements involved in our readiness to feel guilty. The first lies in our belief that the world makes sense—there is a reason for everything that happens.
The second is the thought that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood. A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and calls the rest of the world to its tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not completely abandon that childish thought that our wishes cause things to happen.
25. What is true about the two deceased elderly women?
A.They both died of old age.
B.They died from hard work.
C.They weren't used to the change in life.
D.They died due to the fact that family members didn’t care about them.
26. People feel guilty for the deaths of their loved ones because _____.
A.they cannot find a better way to express their sadness
B.they believe that they are responsible for what has happened
C.they don't know the natural course of events
D.they don't know things often turn out in the opposite direction
27. The underlined part“the world makes sense”in Paragraph 3 probably means that _____.
A.everything in the world is planned in advance
B.the world can be understood in different ways
C.there's an explanation for everything in the world
D.we have to be wise in order to understand the world
28. People have believed since early childhood that ______.
A.everybody is at their command
B.life and death is an unsolved mystery
C.every story should have a happy ending
D.their wishes are the cause of everything that happens
C
Efficiency(效率)and productivity are the key factors in the workplace.Being noticed is essential for the employee to progress. What if you are shy? People often make assumptions that
being shy means you can't complete a job as well as others and this can seriously hold you back.
A shy person is likely to be the one who works hard and struggles for a quiet life rather than being put in an awkward(令人不舒服的)situation.Unfortunately it means that you may be the one who misses a promotion(晋升).Being shy means your boss is less likely to remember you despite your ability. You end up with the "reliable" one who will not compete with others.Communication is essential and while you may be a good listener it is important to make your voice heard.Shy people may have a lot of thoughts, but keeping their ideas to themselves is only to punish themselves when someone else receives praise for the same idea.Bosses may assume that you haven't the ability to think of ideas despite the fact that you have plenty but feel afraid to say them.If deals have to be made, your boss may think you won't be able to win over customers. If you are unsure of carrying out a task and afraid of being laughed at, you will feel depressed. This could cause you not to complete the task effectively enough, Asking for help will ease the pressure.
Being shy can lead to missing a promotion and pay increase because you are afraid to ask.It could be the opportunity for the company to provide extra training for you.If you don't ask you will miss out on greater expertise(专业知识).
Find strategies(策略)to overcome your fears. The challenges may be something such as being the first one to speak to a colleague. The sense of achievement will be inspiring.Later on it could be suggesting at least one idea the next time there is a meeting. If you feel you have serious problems with shyness then try confidence training to help you.Making that decision to try could change your life.
29. According to the passage, a shy person______.
A.often has low efficiency at work
B.will feel embarrassed in the workplace
C.will not be regarded as abler than others
D.will be regarded as the most reliable employee
30. What can we infer from the passage?
A.People often look down upon a shy person.
B.Shyness will prevent our career advancement.
C.Bosses will never give important tasks to a shy person.
D.A shy person will not ask for help when meeting difficulties.
31. To overcome our shyness at work, we can ______.
① greet our colleagues actively
②declare what we're good at to everyone
③get trained to increase our self-confidence
④put forward at least one idea during a meeting
A.①③④B.①②④C.①②③D.②③④
32. What's the best title for the passage?
A.How to overcome shyness? B.The character of a shy person
C.The effects of being shy on people D.Disadvantages of being shy at work
D
Micro-blogging is popular just about everywhere in the world, including China.
Recently Yao Chen became the first micro-blogger in China to reach 9 million followers, on ’s Weibo. She is catching up with singer Justin Bieber (10 million followers) and Lady Gaga (11 million followers) on Twitter.
It would seem our interest in celebrities is endless. Worse yet, not only do we admire
entertainers and athletes, we model our behavior on them, by sending out our own micro messages. We think that we, too, are celebrities, self-indulgently (放任自我地) posting our daily activities and thoughts. It’s as if our every word is gold.
But in fact, we don’t really think about what we are posting. Even the tweets(博客留言) and micro messages of celebrities are rather shallow (浅薄的).
So why do we feel so good when we send out these short communications?
Researchers at Princeton and Harvard Universities have found that short activities make us feel powerful and creative.
Speedy activities give us a happy feeling. So we keep on sending out our micro messages, regardless of the content and finally send out messages or photos that we regret.
Let’s look at an example. The NBA basketball “King”, “King James” LeBron started tweeting in July of 2010, just before announcing that he would join the Miami Heat. He proudly tweeted for almost a year, bragging (吹嘘) how he would help the Heat win the championship. Me, me, me, I am the best. But he and his team fell short. In this case, LeBron James has gone too far in “sharing”. He has forgotten what it means to have dignity (尊严) and purpose in his personal and public lives.
The Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson once wrote: “The body is a house of many windows. There we all sit, showing ourselves and crying on the passers-by to come and love us.”
Yes, everyone wants to be loved. But keeping our private lives private is a good thing. We don’t need fans to find meaning in our lives.
33. The author mentions Yao Chen in Paragraph 2 in order to ______.
A. show that Chinese celebrities can compete with international ones
B. stress the influence of celebrities on micro-blogging
C. encourage more people to take up micro-blogging
D. question the popularity of celebrity micro-blogging
34. According to the article, micro-blogging is popular because it ______.
A. lets people comment freely on other’s micro-blogs
B. helps people share their daily activities and thoughts
C. makes people feel like celebrities themselves
D. helps people get in touch with their favorite celebrities
35. LeBron James is used to show that ______.
A. we should consider carefully what we post in micro-blogs
B. athletes need not share their feelings with their fans
C. everyone wants to get attention and be loved
D. people need clearly to separate their private and public lives
