I was new to this high school, and to the students it served. I settled into my seat at the front of the classroom. Of the thirty students, I counted just 10 in their seats. The students didn’t seem to
want to be there. They sat in their chairs, staring out of the window.
The back door opened heavily. After Mike came Belinda. No apologies, no explanations. “Things will get better, ” I told myself, and began the first lesson. Perhaps because I was nervous, I ran through the material more quickly than I should have. “Wait, ” interrupted Mike.“I didn’t pay good money to come to a school where the teacher doesn’t explain things clearly.” It was forty-five minutes before class ended, but I couldn’t go any further. In all my years of teaching, I’d never had a class like this. The next day I got to school early as usual. This time the students showed up on time, but half the students didn’t take notes. They acted as if they were sitting there to meet a requirement.
Why couldn’t I reach them?
“You try picturing them being happy and successful,” my husband advised.
The next day, I pictured each student listening, taking notes, raising their hands and learning. Then at school, my eyes moved from chair to chair. I thought about how hard they worked during the day, studying late into the night or whenever they had a spare moment.
Things started to change. During the break, Mark even volunteered to help me set up my materials. Belinda stayed focused, quietly taking notes.
At our last class Mike handed me a thank-you card signed by every student. One comment stood out: “It took me a while, but I found I enjoyed your class. Nothing could take away the joy I got from my experience. Thank you, Belinda.” My eyes were filled with tears.
4. How about the students first mentioned in the text?
A. They were cool and polite.
B. They were all promising.
C. They were never late for the class.
D. They were almost absent from class.
5. What can we learn about the author?
A. She wasn’t new to teaching.
B. She loved educated students.
C. She can’t explain things clearly.
D. She was given a warm welcome.
6. Why were the author’s eyes full of tears at last?
A. She felt heartbroken for her students’ failure.
B. She couldn’t tear herself away from her students.
C. All her efforts to teach her students paid off.
D. Everything about the students was unchangable.

Traveling to new destinations can widen our horizons and build up our confidence. But packing up those trips is a different matter altogether. For some, it is a must that they have everything in their bag so they feel at home in any country. For others, traveling light is the key to easy traveling. Those in the former group could be described as the tourist type, while those in the latter group are more of the traveler type. So, as a traveler, how do you pack the right way?
Have a travel packing list. You may require special equipment such as a helmet while on an adventure, but that would be useless if you were headed to a beach for a peaceful time with your partner. For a travel junkie(着迷者), the first thing you should do is create a list and have it saved on your computer or your smartphone. As you travel more, you will learn what you actually need and what you can easily leave at home—having a travel checklist is as essential(必不可少的) as having tickets for the plane.
Choose the right bag. A big backpack that can contain all the essentials is the perfect fit for a week-long hiking tour. But when you are staying in one place for months at a stretch and plan to do all sorts of adventurous and non-adventurous activities the destination has to offer, it is vital that you have an expandable(可扩张的) bag with lots of space because you will require different things for different activities.
Roll your clothes to save space. Ask any travel expert, and they will tell you this: rolling the clothes instead of folding them while packing saves a lot of space and time. This way, you can pack
a month’s worth of clothes into a small bag that is easy to travel with.
7. In which way is a traveler different from a tourist?
A. He pays more attention to travel light.
B. He builds up more confidence than a tourist.
C. He thinks it a must to have everything ready.
D. He prefers to travel at home rather than go abroad.
8. What is the first thing to do if you are a travel lover?
A. Choosing the right backpack.
B. Learning to roll the clothes.
C. Buying a set of equipment.
D. Making a travel checklist.
9. Which can replace the word “vital” underlined in the third paragraph?
A. very difficult
B. very important
C. quite interesting
D. quite troublesome
10. Why does the author suggest the clothes be rolled?
A. It will make the packing slower.
B. It will make the packing much easier.
C. It can save a traveler much more money and time.
D. It can save a traveler a lot of space and time.【答案】7. A 8. D 9. B 10.

根据文章第一段内容“For some, it is a must that they have everything in their bag so they feel at home in any country. For others, traveling light is the key to easy traveling. Those in the former group could be described as the tourist type, while those in the latter group are more of the traveler type.(对一些人来说,他们必须把所有东西都放在包里,这样他们在任何国家都能有宾至如归的感觉。

故选A项。

根据文章第一段末尾句和第二段首句“So, as a traveler, how do you pack the right way? Have a travel packing list.(那么,作为一个旅行者,你应该怎样打包行李呢?有一份旅行打包清单。

)”可知,紧随问题之后的方法是“有一份旅行打包清单”,由此可知,这应是首要的。

故选D项。

【9题详解】
词义猜测题。

分析划线单词所在句“it is vital that you have an expandable bag with lots of space
because you will require different things for different activities”可知,“you have an expandable
bag with lots of space”应是真正主语,后文“because you will require different things for

根据文章末尾段内容“Ask any travel expert, and they will tell you this: rolling the clothes instead of folding them while packing saves a lot of space and time.(问任何一个旅行专家,他们会告诉你:打包时把衣服卷起来而不是叠起来,这样可以节省很多空间和时间。

根据本段小标题“Listen to foreign news reports.”可知,本段核心话题为“听外语新闻”,且前文“A great way to speed up your learning process is to follow the news in a foreign language.”

C“Mix with native speakers as often as possible.(尽可能多地与说本族语的人接触。

)”合理概括的该部分核心内容,句中“Mix with native speakers”与“studying in a country or region where the target language is spoken”相呼应,贴合主题。

且根据后文“Then refer to it often throughout the day.”

D“You can also use your phone to store new vocabulary.”
