第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A
I still remember my first day at school in London and I was half-excited and half-frightened. On my way to school I wondered what sort of questions the other boys would ask me and practiced all the answers: “I am nine years old. I was born here but I haven’t lived here since I was two. I was living in Farley. It’s about thirty miles away. I came back to London two months ago.” I also wondered if it wa s the custom for boys to fight strangers like me, but I was tall for my age. I hoped they would decide not to risk it.
No one took any notice of me before school. I stood in the center of the playground, expecting someone to say “hello”, but no one spoke t o me. When a teacher called my name and told me where my classroom was, one or two boys looked at me but that was all.
My teacher was called Mr. Jones. There were 42 boys in the class, so I didn’t stand out there, either, until the first lesson of the afternoon. Mr. Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens and he had decided to read aloud to us from David Copperfield, but first he asked several boys if they knew Dickens’ birthplace, but no one guessed right. A boy called Brian, the biggest in the class, said: “Timbuktu”, and Mr. Jones went red in the face. Then he asked me. I said: “Portsmouth”, and everyone stared at me because Mr. Jones said I was right. This didn’t make me very popular, of course.
“He thinks he’s clever,” I heard Brian say.
After that, we went out to the playground to play football. I was in Brian’s team, and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal. No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper.
“He’s big enough and useless enough.” Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me.
I suppose Mr. Jones, who served as the judge, remembered Dickens, too, because when the game was nearly over, Brian pushed one of the players on the other team, and he gave them a penalty (惩罚). As the boy kicked the ball to my right, I threw myself down instinctively (本能地) and saved it. All my team crowded round me. My bare knees were injured and bleeding. Brian took out a handkerchief and offered it to me.
“Do you want to join my gang (帮派)?” he said.
At the end of the day, I was no longer a stranger.

When you read Google eBooks online, there are new tools that will improve your reading experience. Google posted the new options on May 19, the same day that Amazon celebrated a milestone of selling more ebooks than print books. Google includes a feature that Amazon hasn’t managed to of fer yet: readers can now translate passages of a text while they are reading an ebook in Google books.
The Google eBookstore has books in different languages. There are even magazines to read in the Google eBookstore. Not all of the books can be downloaded to an ereader, but they can all be read online. The new Google tools will work when you are reading Google ebooks in a web browser.
On May 19, 2011, Google Books software engineer Derek Lei explained in an article that “all of the tools have the same starting point. When you select a word or a passage, you can double click your mouse and a menu will appear. You will then see options to look up a definition, translate the words, and search the book. The definition works like a regular online dictionary; Google Dictionary offers a short definition with the option for more information and a pronunciation guide. The translation tool works the way Google’s webpage translation works. ”
Searching books has always been part of Google’s focus; Sergey Brin and Larry Page started Google with the aim of searching books. The new additions of defining books while you are reading them are common with ebook readers, but being able to translate to and from different languages, including Latin, is even bigger than the origina l “big idea” of Google books.
43. Why was May 19 an important day for Google?
A.Because Google began to sell more ebooks than print ones.
B.Because Google translated many books into Latin on that day.
C.Because it was a turning point when Amazon was defeated by Google.
D.Because Google offered new tools to make online reading easier.
44. The Google eBookstore can offer its readers the following service EXCEPT __________.

C.downloading any ebook as they like
D.translation while reading

A.you have to stop reading and turn to a new page
B.you can double click your mouse and follow the instructions
C.you must refer to its pronunciation on other websites
D.don’t expect detailed inf ormation about this word
46. Google was started to __________.
A.search books
B.translate words or passages
C.provide a communication tool
D.exchange academic information

I sat with my friend in a well-known coffee shop in Venice. As we enjoyed our coffee, a man entered and sat on an empty table beside us. He called the waiter and placed his order saying, Two cups of coffee, one of them on the wall. We heard this order with rather interest and observed that he was served with one cup of coffee but he paid for two. As soon as he left, the waiter pasted a piece of paper on the wall saying A Cup of Coffee. A few minutes later, two other men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two on the table and one on the wall. They had two cups of coffee but paid for three and left. This time also, the waiter did the same; he pasted a piece of paper on the wall saying, A Cup of Coffee. It seemed that this gesture was quite normal here. However, it was something unique and puzzling for us. When we finished our coffee, we paid the bill and left.
After a few days, we went to this coffee shop again. While we were enjoying our coffee, a man entered. The way this man was dressed did not match the standard nor the atmosphere of this coffee shop. Poverty was obvious from the looks on his face. As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and said, one cup of coffee from the wall. The waiter served coffee to this man with the customary respect and dignity. The man had his coffee and left without paying. We were amazed to watch all this when the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it in the dustbin.
Now it was no surprise for us the matter was very clear. The great respect for the needy shown by the inhabitants of this town welled up our eyes with tears.
47. Wh at’s the best title for this passage?
A. One More Coffee
B. Coffee on the Wall
C. A Coffee Shop
D. A Cup of Coffee
48. The customers paid extra money for coffee to _____.
A. help a friend
B. tip the waiter
C. give a stranger
D. treat the writer
49. The customer who ordered coffee from the wall _____.
A. was dressed properly
B. felt embarrassed to enter the café
C. was moved to tears
D. was offered a good service
50. We can learn from the passage that the citizens of Venice are very____.
A. generous
B. rich
C. happy
D. careful

How to Better Remember Information Y ou’ve Studied
51It is important in school success to learn, organize and recollect information quickly and efficiently. Failure to learn this skill leads to consistent failure in test-taking which is a key element of academic evaluation.
Making new knowledge easier to remember is an essential skill. In order to better remember information, it has to be made meaningful and must be organized into logical categories. New information can be made meaningful by putting it into your own words. If you can put the information into your own words, then it proves understanding of the concepts. Information that is organized under specific subject headings is much easier to remember than unorganized ideas. 52 If the information is not made meaningful and organized, it is very difficult for that information to make it into your long-term memory.
53 Creating a picture in your mind that represents an idea or group of ideas is an effective method. It creates a second means of encoding the same information in your brain allowing easier recall. Often, the crazier the image, the easier the recall becomes.
Living a healthy lifestyle also benefits memory skills. A balanced diet and regular exercise increases oxygen to the brain and thus improves recall. Taking a break while studying to get some exercise will improve test results by increasing oxygen flow to the brain. Getting a good night sleep also improves memory.
54 Information is not recalled easily if your brain is tired.
Exchanging ideas with friends is another way to improve memory. Social interactions stimulate memory. Studying in groups often produces better results in testing through shared interaction. Having a partner can help with focus and staying on task. 55
A.Creating mental pictures is useful in education.
B.Remembering information is a key learning skill.
C.As well, new ideas first enter short-term memory.
D.If a friend needs skills in a certain area, offer your advice.
E.Asking each other questions and sharing opinions can provide powerful memory tools.
F.It’s important that you be able to express yourself in a logical manner in group discussions.
G. A tired brain will have trouble concentrating long enough to push information into long-term memory.

I read the news in recent newspaper that some experts suggested that listening test should not be included in high school English exams. I don’t think the suggestion is wise.
First, listening is an important skill. If we’re poor at listening, how can we understand a native English speaker? It is because listening is part of English exams that we pay much attention to it and practice it as much as possible.
Second, listening can help us learn English effectively. In order to learn English well, we need a large amount of input in English and listening is a good way to do that. It can help improve our reading and writing.
In a word, listening test is of great importance. We need it.
