A young female athlete in thePhilippinesrecently won many gold medals during a sports meet despite not having proper running shoes. Rhea Ballos, an 11-year-old student ofSalvationElementary Schoolin Balason,Iloilo, wasonly wearing bandages around her feet when she competed at the Iloilo Schools Sports Meet.
Facebook user Valenzuela posted pictures of the girl with her feet wrapped in bandages bearing the famous Nike logo. Ballos even wrote the word “NIKE” on the sides of her “shoe” to complete the “Nike running shoes” look. The bandages were tightly wrapped around her feet, creating a thin protective layer against the track. While she was actually barefoot during the races, she was still able to defeat her competitors who all more proper footwear intended for running,
According to the post, Ballos bagged the top awards in the 400-meter dash, the 800-meter run, and the 1500-meter run in the girls' categories in the inter school sporting event held in Iloilo, central Philippines.
When pictures of her “Nike” footwear become popular, Flipinos on social media praised her. Many noted that instead of falling into self-pity, she was even able to make light of the situation by drawing the Nike logo on her “running shoes”. Some of the commenters of Valenzuela's post expressed how the girl deserved to be recognized by Nike and that the brand should actually give her a new pair of real Nike shoes. Others started getting in touch with the American sports brand, as well as local basketball specialty store Titan 22.
It did not take long for Titan co-founder and Alaska Aces head coach Jeffrey Cariaso to take notice of Ballos' outstanding achievement. I was at my parent’s dinner table. Before me was a worn journal of thin and discolor1 ed pages. It was my grandfather’s journal and now belonged to my father. My grandfather had passed away in the months leading up to my birth. I never got to visit the places he had frequented and the people who had been a part of his life’s journey.
I was now about to enter his world, through the words he had left behind. Within minutes, I wascaptivatedby the power of the written words. In the magical script (笔迹) before me, I was transported to another age when food was an everyday art, planned, prepared and enjoyed in the company of others, and a time when people had the heart to pause their own lives to embrace (拥抱) each other’s struggles. All this was conveyed to me in the beauty of the words that flowed together to connect with the writer’s mind and understand the world they lived in.
That kind of writing seems to be lost on us today. We have gotten used to writing in bite-sized pieces for a public looking for entertainment, and hungry for information. No wonder, there are nearly 200 million bloggers on the Internet and a new blog is created somewhere in the world every half a second. Instead of adding to our collective wisdom, most of these writings reflectthe superficiality (肤浅) and impatience of our day and age.
This not only robs us of the skill of writing impressive essays, it also prevents us from exploring what is indeed important. Writing humbles (使谦卑) us in a way that is vital for our character growth, by reminding us about the limits of the self and our appropriate place in the vast flow of life. Writing frees us by helping us explore the unknown so that we really open up to magic of the world around us. I saw all of this in the writing of my grandfather. And I’ve seen it again and again in the writings of the greatest thinkers of humanity. Their writing reflect deep thought on issues of human importance.
8. The underlined word “captivated” in the second paragraph can be replaced by “________”.
A. puzzled
B. frightened
C. attracted
D. defeated
9. In the author’s grandfather’s age, people ________.
A. lived a hard life
B. cared about each other
C. were fond of writing
D. treated food as an art
10. The author begins the text with her grandfather’s journal in order to ________.
A. show her respect to her grandfather
B. present the importance of good writing
C. express her interest in reading as well as writing
D. raise the problems with today’s writing
11. In the last paragraph, the author is trying to _________.
A. discuss what good writing is like
B. express her strong desire to learn writing skills
C. stress the effects of her grandfather’s journal on her
D. show her admiration for her grandfather’s writing
D
We asked four people who watched an online talk on technology and communication by Sherry Turkle for their opinions.
Fred:
The talk certainly gave me plenty of food for thought about how technology is changing our behaviour. People are constantly multitasking, whether it be emailing during meetings or texting in the checkout queue. It’s as if we can’t bear to miss out on what our online friends are up to, so we juggle the real and online world. My greatest concern is that we don’t give our brains a chance to switch off. It’sthese precious momentswhen we
actually process information that helps us make important decisions.
Jeremy:
It was a fascinating talk and the speaker really hit the nail on the head with a couple of things. Take parental influence, for instance. How can we expect teenagers not to text while doing their homework when they witness their parents posting on social media while cooking the evening meal or waiting at a red light?
Kath:
So much of what the speaker said rang true. I honestly believe there’s a danger that the more connected we are, the more isolated we feel. I don’t think this is such an issue for my generation who’ve lived without technology for so long. We know how to be alone. But the under 20s are another kettle of fish. They’re so busy communicating that they never experience the feeling of solitude and run the risk of not learning how to enjoy their own company.
Carl:
I’m not sure to what extent I agree that people are more alone, but the way we communicate has certainly evolved. The speaker makes a good point about how we’re getting used to talking with machines like Siri or robots, which are totally lack of experience of human life. But despite such limitations, we seem to be expecting more from technology and less from each other.
12. What does the underlined phrase “these precious moments” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. When our brains are free.
B. When we emailing during meeting.
C. When we texting in the checkout queue.
D. When we juggle the real and online world.
13. What suggestion may Jeremy give to the parents?
A. Accompany their children when they are doing homework.
B. Prevent their children using phone while doing homework.
C. Set a good example for their children on using phone properly.
D. Stop posting on social media in face of their children.
14. What does Kath worry about the under 20s generation?
A. They communicate more with others.
B. They use more technology.
C. It’s difficult for them to find companies.
D. They don’t know how to be alone.
15. What is Carl’s attitude towards the use of technology in communication?
A. Favorable.
B. Intolerant.
C. Doubtful.
D. Indifferent.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

选项中有两项为多余选项Giving generously and receiving gratefully make it easier to live happily with others.___16___
Let me start with the idea of giving generously.___17___For example, my husband and I have family members who only contact us when they need money. We usually accept their requests, but we rarely receive a “ thank you ”. Most people would say that my husband and I are being used, and I suppose we are. But when we give, we shouldn't be giving for the purpose of getting gratitude or praise.___18___
The good news is that when we lead our lives being nice toothers, our lives run more smoothly. If you're generous, yes, some people will use you. But if you practice being generous, most of your relationships will improve.
___19___I truly believe that you cannot say "thank you" enough when you receive. So often we get lazy about expressing gratitude. Parents can feel unappreciated by their children, and teachers can feel unappreciated by their students. Do you think it unnecessary to thank them when receiving just because a task is part of someone's job description? That's wrong!
Words of appreciation make others feel good about themselves likenothing else. It's good for us to say "thank you" because we regularly need to remind ourselves of how lucky we are.___20___
If you are looking for a way to improve your life, I can give you one:Give generously and receive gratefully.
A. Thus, saying "thank you” can bring us good luck.
B. Rather, we should be giving because it's a good thing.
C. And hearing those two words can make us feel great for days.
D. And at the same time, we should remember to receive gratefully.
E. In return, we are to help others by giving them our time or money,
F. I think people are unwilling to be generous to others for fear of being used.
G. Yet, why do we have such difficulty achieving these things in our relationships?

WhenBendelivered milk to my cousin's home that morning, he wasn’t his usual sunny self.

In the weeks that my husband, kids and I had been staying with my cousin while house- hunting, I had come to enjoy Ben’ssunnypersonality and cheerful conversation.
