Hello, Tm Jerry. I’m from Canada. Everybody experiences culture shock in different ways. For me it was apparent. I can still remember what it felt like when I arrived in China.
I was picked up from the airport by a group of foreign people from India. They spoke just enough English to mention the names of my employer, and my housing complex (综合大楼). As I didn’t have too many choices, I went along with them, hoping for the best. It seemed strange to be riding down the Chengdu expressway in an old van with a group of other foreigners. For the first time in my life I was swimming in a cultural wave pool and I was still in the shallow end. This was my introduction to China and for the next few weeks things just seemed to get more unexpected. My mind was trying to wrap my head around 1,000 years of cultural differences, and the feeling to this day is still completely indescribable.
This was my introduction to China. It’s not as crazy for everybody, but you can expect some degree of culture shock when moving to a country so different from your own. Hopefully I can pass on some critical advice to help you know what to expect. And you should prepare for culture shock you could experience before moving abroad.

Not all birds have their eyes on the sides of their heads. Pigeons and parrots do, but other birds, such as owls, have large eyes placed close together at the front of their heads.
Whether they have eyes at the front or on the sides of their heads, all birds can still see straight ahead. But that doesn’t mean all birds see things in the same way.
Having two eyes means animals can see a three-dimensional (三举的) image of what’s around them. So they can sense the height, width and depth of an object, as well as how far away it is. Where a bird’s eyes are on its head influences its field of vision (视觉). Think about how far you can see to either side without turning your head: these are the limits of your own field of vision. Because owls have eyes at the front of their heads, they have a smaller field of vision. Parrots, pigeons and other birds with eyes on the sides of their heads have a much bigger field of vision. Amazingly, this means that they can see things in front and on sides, at the same time.
Having different kinds of vision helps different kinds of birds live in the wild. For parrots and pigeons, having a wider field of vision with only a small blind spot behind them lets them see where they are going, while they are also keeping an eye out for predators (捕食性动物)which might be trying to catch them. For owls, having forward-facing eyes helps them to see depth and distance much more clearly, since both eyes can see the same object at the same time. This is perfect for finding and catching small prey (猎物)such as field mice.
( )36. What do all birds have in common about vision?
A. They can see nothing in the dark.
B. They can see objects in front clearly.
C. They can see things ahead and on sides at the same time.
D. They can see more three-dimensional images than humans.
( )37. Why does the writer suggest we think about our own vision?
A. To show us having two eyes is better.
B. To show us human eyes have some weaknesses.
C. To let us better understand the field of vision.
D. To let us imagine the world in the eyes, of owls.
( )38. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Birds’ eyes have more purposes than humans’.
B. The position of birds’ eyes influences their visual field.
C. Some animals can sense objects correctly without eyes.
D. Humans’ eyes have much in common with other animals’.
( )39. What advantage do birds with eyes on the sides have?
A. They can find more food in the wild.
B. They can do better in watching for predators.
C. They can see two different images of one object.
D. They can fly in the air with no blind area of sight.
( )40. With forward-facing eyes, owls can ___________.
A. see several things differently
B. discover the mice under the ground
C. do well in catching small prey
D. make small prey feel scared

Several recent studies have found that children can perform better if they go to the natural world more. But why? Do they get more exercise? Breathe cleaner air?
Recent British research shows one advantage such kids enjoy. It finds they score higher on a test of spatial (空间的)working memory —the ability to keep visual (视觉的)information long enough to process it and make use of it to solve problems.
For a child, this may mean developing a sense of whether they have taken the proper way through a wooded area.
The research team, led by Eirini Flouri of University College London, used data (数据) on 4,758 11-year-olds living in England. The amount of green space in their neighborhoods was estimated (估算)using data from satellite images.
The kids all completed a test in which they were asked to search for blue coins on a computer screen by clicking (点击)on boxes of different colors. The task got more difficult as more boxes were added. The kids were asked not to return to the boxes they’d already clicked once, which made them remember which boxes had already been searched.
The researchers consider different things that could influence the kids’ ability. They found children living in greener neighborhoods have better spatial working memory.
“This i s an important finding,” they said. “Getting close to green space may be conducive to children.” Flouri can’t be certain why.
One could argue that, for a neighborhood, parks are not just relaxing places — they may play a special role in developing young minds.
( )41. Why does the writer ask questions in the first paragraph?
A. To make people read more.
B. To show the importance of clean air.
C. To show his opinion on exercise.
D. To question the result of the studies.
( )42. Kids with better spatial working memory may___________.

D. record more research data at a time
( )43. What is the key rule of the spatial working memory test?
A. Don’t click on the same box again.
B. Only blue boxes can be searched
C. Find out the green space area shortly.
D. Coins of different colors can’t be put together.
( )44. What does the underlined word “conducive” in Paragraph 7 mean?
A. Important.
B. Unconnected.
C. Harmful.
D. Helpful.
( )45. What do Flouri’s findings suggest?
A. Children’s ability to learn develops quickly.
B. It’s not proper to take parks as relaxing places.
C. it’s necessary to make kids get close to green space.
D. Parental education has a great influence on kids’ memory.
