Lesson 12 Life on a desert island (Ⅰ)
Most of us have formed an unrealistic picture of life on a desert island. We sometimes imagine a desert island to be a sort of paradise where the sun always shines. Life there is simple and good. Ripe fruit falls from the trees and you never have to work. The other side of the picture is quite the opposite. Life on a desert island is wretched. You either starve to death or live like Robinson Crusoe, waiting for a boat which never comes. Perhaps there is an element of truth in both these pictures, but few of us have had the opportunity to find out.

unrealistic adj. not showing or accepting things as they are不切实际 的；不实事求是的 e.g. (1) 不切实际的期望 unrealistic expectations (2) 指望他们能够立即解决问题是不现实的。 It is unrealistic to expect them to be able to solve the problem immediately. opposite: realistic adj. 现实的；实际的；实事求是的 adv. unrealistically e.g. 这些价格高得太离谱了。 These prices are unrealistically high.
sort
sort n. [c] a group or type of people or things that are similar in a particular way种类；类别；品种 e.g. 有各种各样的工作你可以做。 There are all sorts of jobs you could do. a sort of sth (informal) used for describing sth in a not very exact way(表示不十分准确) 近似于某物，有点像是某物 e.g. 我隐约觉得他不会来。 I had a sort of feeling that he wouldn‟t come. v. [vn] ~sth (into sth) to arrange things in groups or in a particular order according to their type, ect.; to separate things of one type from others 整理；把…分类 e.g. 垃圾很容易分开，可归入塑料、玻璃和纸三类。 Rubbish can easily be separated and sorted into plastics, glass and paper.

opposite n. a person or thing that is as different as possible from another相反 的人（事物） e.g. (1) 与白色相反的是黑色。 Black is the opposite of white. (2) 她相当文静，可她的妹妹完全[正好]相反。 She is rather quiet, but her sister is completely / just the opposite. adj. (to) • as different as possible from 相反的，对立的 e.g. (1) 他转身朝着相反的方向走了。 He turned and walked in the opposite direction. 2. facing(在…)对面的，相对的（after noun 用在名词后） e.g. 我住在对面的房子里。 I live in the houses opposite. prep. facing在…的对面 e.g. 火车站对面的房子 the houses opposite the station

Two men who recently spent five days on a coral island wished they had stayed there longer. They were taking a badly damaged boat from the Virgin Islands to Miami to have it repaired. During the journey, their boat began to sink. They quickly loaded a small rubber dinghy with food, matches, and cans of beer and rowed for a few miles across the Caribbean until they arrived at a tiny coral island. There were hardly any trees on the island and there was no water, but this did not prove to be a problem. The men collected rainwater in the rubber dinghy. As they had brought a spear gun with them, they had plenty to eat. They caught lobster and fish every day，and, as one of them put it 'ate like kings'. When a passing tanker rescued them five days later, both men were genuinely sorry that they had to leave.

(5) [vn to inf] 我本来以为她的年龄还要大一些。 I had imagined her to be older than that. (6) [vn] 这房子正是她所想象的。 The house was just as she had imagined it. imagine…to be…作“想象…是…” “设想…是…” 讲。不定式 to be 引起的短语 作宾语补足语。
ripe [raip] (riper, ripest) 1. (of fruit or crops水果或庄稼) fully grown and ready to be eaten成熟的 e.g. 西红柿还没熟透的时候就摘下来。 Pick the tomatoes before they get too ripe. opposite: unripe 2. ~(for sth) ready or suitable for sth to happen时机成熟的；适宜的 e.g.(1) 这片土地适宜开发。 This land is ripe for development. (2) 社会变革的时机已经成熟。 The conditions were ripe for social change. n. [v,vn] to become ripe; to make sth ripe (使) 成熟
